Hi.
Tried those echo commands, nothing.
I used jaws for dos to see if that worked and it did (I start slackware from dos using loadlin).
When the kernel boots however, the blt clicks on like it's going to say something, but nothing happens.
Below is the line I use to start linux encase it helps.

smartdrv /C
c:\loadlin\loadlin c:\linux\vmlinuz root=/dev/hda1 speakup_synth=bns speakup_ser=0

Hi Alex. Try leaving out the c:\ before vmlinuz. Probably vmlinuz is confused when it can't understand what c:\ means. I remember that when I had to edit my Debian start-up batchfile for installation, it was something like: c:\dosutils\loadlin linux speakup_synth=dectlk root=/dev/ram and so on.

But the kernel boots fine.  I used to get a "kernel panic" when I had /dev/hdb instead of /dev/hda because of some horrible docs I found.   I'll try that anyways.  Everything but speakup seems to work.

Quick question.  What are the settings on the Braille Lite?  Press
chord+dots 3 and 4 and look through the status menu.  The reason I ask is
that newer Blazie products can use Windisk.  Windisk requires 38400 for
the baud, but Speakup is hard-coded to use 9600.  You must have it set to
9600, 8data bits, 1 stop bit, and software handshaking to work in Speakup.

I've had the same problem you just describe where the blazie product just clicks like it's going to say something, but it doesn't. Kirk claims that the synth detection has been fixed, but the synth is still not detected at all when it is a blazie product on a 486 I have. The solution for me was to specify the port the synth is on. From your earlier posts I gather that you are familar with gnu/linux serial port naming. If your blt is on ttyS0, then add "speakup_ser=ttyS0" without the quotes to the line in linux.bat that starts your kernel. Hth.

echo testing >/dev/ttyS0

How about the same thing for /dev/ttyS1

PS: Be sure to note the capital letter S in the above commands.

speakup_synth=dectlk at the lilo prompt. Or in /etc/lilo.conf, you would
do something like append
speakup_synth=dectlk. This will apply to all of your installed vmlinuz

right, but it still won't work! Do you know how to change the port settings
like parity and baud rate in linux?

The default Braille Lite 2K settings work with the default speakup linux 
settings.

I happen to have this device as well, and I even use it with speakup 
sometimes.

So, before we head off on a tangent ...

Can you do the echo commands I suggested and get speech out of any of 
them?

The braille lite probably wants 9600,n,8,1 and that is the default
on the bns driver. There are no "default port settings for linux"
on the port that speakup runs on since speakup sets default settings of its own which are
synth specific.
The bios usually initializes ports to 2400,n,8,1 but often linux
sets them to 9600,n,8,1 on boot but only on ports that speakup is *not* controlling.
