Tried those echo commands, = nothing.
I used jaws for dos to see if that = worked and it=20 did (I start slackware from dos using loadlin).
When the kernel boots however, the blt = clicks on=20 like it's going to say something, but nothing happens.
Below is the line I use to start linux = encase it=20 helps.
 
smartdrv /C
c:\loadlin\loadlin = c:\linux\vmlinuz=20 root=3D/dev/hda1 speakup_synth=3Dbns = speakup_ser=3D0
