Hello Young: I am affraid I can't answer your question about whether
speakup is available under Oricle Enterprise Linux.  My suggestion
there is that you make this same request on the speakup mailing list.
There are many folks on the list that use various distributions of
linux with speakup.  If the Oricle distribution enables the kernel's
staging tree then speakup should work with it by just loading the
appropriate modules.

The screen reader most often used with graphics "X11" is orca.  They
have their own mailing list which I recommend you joining as well if
you wish to use X.

Good luck with your persuits and welcome to the gnu/linux community.
I find it is a much more satisfying group of people than the Windows
community.

Oracle Enterprise Linux is a modified form of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, but
Oracle builds its own kernels now according to what I have read.

Details that you can find via the Web or the list regarding Speakup and Red
Hat may also apply to Oracle.

Hi,
If you can find the kernel headers that correspond to the kernel running 
on the Oracle Enterprise linux, you should be able to build speakup for 
that box even if the staging modules are not present.
You can however do most things through a remote ssh connection to an 
oracle server.
When you talk about Oracle applications, I suppose you refer to things 
like Oracle financials etc.
My own experience with those which was long ago, indicated that Oracle's 
apps are notoriusly inaccessible.
Unless life in the Oracle world has changed a lot, I do not see the need 
to be able to work on the Oracle server directly with spee=ch. Use ssh 
from a normal linux PC for that.
Others with more reacent Oracle experience should confirm/deny this.

Hi all,

I didn't read the entire thread before my prior post.

EM and most of the oracle applications are now written to be used via the web, so that shouldn't be a problem either from a windows pc or from firefox under EL with orca.

Sqlplus is a command-line client, so simply use orca and open a gnome-terminal window and run sqlplus in it.  I can verify that this works well.  Because I need to setup an EL virtual machine for some of my testing, I will check on getting Speakup to work as I have some time and get back to the list about it.

Young,

I am not currently using oracle enterprise Linux with orca, although I did a quick test with it about a month ago, and it was fairly accessible.

The biggest issue for using the Oracle database on Linux (no matter which distro), is that you need to have the java accessibility wrapper installed into the jvm so that orca can interact with the database installer which is written in java.  

I am assuming, that you are wanting the full-blown version of the database not just the express database since it lacks some of the functionality that the full database has.  The express database can be installed simply by installing a package on both redhat/fedora distros and debian/ubuntu distros.

I will be out of the office most of this week, but when I return I will be installing Enterprise Linux along with a full-blown 12C database so I will be able to give more detailed feedback at that point.
