I have tried four things, one of which is suggested here.

1.  Download with ftp in binary mode to my system at work, split and
transfer the files to diskette, reassemble them at home and run install from
MSDOS mode.  I had someone to watch the screen.   It started expanding files
and ran into a CRC error and halted.  I think it was trying to do something
with root.bin.
2.  I looked more carefully at the options during download with internet
explorer.  There is a combo box with two choices: document and all files.  I
decided to experiment with the all files choice.  I discovered that most of
the .bin and .img files had the default set to document.  In all subsequent
steps, I made sure that it was set to all files for these.  For .zip and
.EXE files, the default setting seemed to work properly.  I checked this
choice on every subsequent download to make sure that it looked like a
binary download would take place.
3.  I took a suggestion to try downloading zipspeak.  I did and it worked.
I was asked for a login.  I did not know where to go from there so I entered
root and got a command prompt.  Ctrl-alt-del shut the system down
wonderfully but I had to turn it off and on to get back to MSDOS.
4.  I tried downloading debian again and it did not work..  I did not have
anyone available to look at the screen.  While I did, I dug around in the
BIOS settings and didn't find much of anything worthy of note.

I don't have much of an idea where to go with this from here.  I am
reasonably sure I am downloading properly, I am also reasonably certain that
the system will work with linux since zipspeak worked.  I am not sure what
else to try.  Thanks much for all the help up to this point and I hope soon
to get to a point with this that I don't have to ask so many questions.

Hi Bruce.

What machine is this?  This is a kernel configuration problem I do
believe.  If you could give me the make of the machine, or, if it is a
self built machine, which processor and chipset that is on the
motherboard?  We will get this working.  Sorry you have had such problems.

Hi all!

I appreciate the time that everyone has spent helping me on this.  This
machine is a Compaq presario -- I don't know the model number,  600 mhz, 128
mb ram, 20 gig hard drive, dvd reader, cd writer, built in modem, NIC card,
sound blaster live and pentium 3 processor..

I forgot one other thing I did while someone was here to watch this weekend.
I have the 6 disk set debian distribution and I discovered that my machine
was capable of booting from CD-ROM.  I put the first Debian disk in and
booted and got prompts for keyboard and hard drive partitioning stuff like I
would have expected so I think the machine is basicly allright.  I don't
know if any of this helps much.

Hi Bruce

Back to the download drawing board.  Also what synth are you trying to get
working with this?  I would recommend that you boot from a boot disk and
not from dos.  I know it shouldn't be a problem but you never no.  

Also you should use ftp under a dos sesion to get the disk images in
binary form.  Since you have the cd's you will just need the boot and root
disks.  

We will certainly hang in there with you until you get it going.

Hi again!

I am using a speakout speech synthesizer.  I used rawrite2 to copy the .bin
files to diskette.  Just for grins, I tried to look at the diskettes after
copying them and noticed that the boot disk is apparently somewhat readable
in MSDOS but the root disk is not.  I attempted to boot from the diskette
and there was no speech.  I did not go beyond that point.

I will use ftp a little later to try to get those files again though they
were a part of what I brought home from work when I used ftp to download all
the files.  That is the least I can do especially since I have gotten so
much help with this from so many people here.  Thanks much.

I am resuming this message after downloading those two files as well as
linux-spkout.bin in ftp in binary mode.  I tried install.bat and booting
from the diskettes I made using rawrite2 from these files with the same
result as before.  There is no change in operation that I can detect.  No
speech and lock up with the install.bat and a stop of diskette activity with
no speech when booting from the diskette.  I pressed enter and got strange
sounds from the disk drive for a second, guessed that it might be looking
for the root disk, put it in, pressed enter again and got quieter disk
activity for a second or two and no more activity that I could detect.
Again, this is with the newly downloaded images using ftp in binary mode.

Bruce.  Is it posible for you to get on the reflector so that we can ask
you some questions.  You will need a copy of
speakfreely.  http://www.speakfreely.org

Then connect to lwl.braille.uwo.ca:4074 Then we should be able to discus
this with you.  A little baffled about your problem but I am sure that one
of us can help get you up and running.  One of us may need to compile you
a custom kernel, posibly with the cvs version of speakup.  Drop on by the
reflector when you can.

CVS isn't anything about pharmacies, though that might make for a good
retort. The CVS version is the latest in the development cycle. CVS is an
acronym which I can't recall all the words to. But beyond the name it is a
system that allows more then one developer to safely work on the same
project at a time.

To get the source code you check it out (like a library). Except in this
particular case, there are different levels of access. A develper can
check portions in a manner that indicates he is going to make
changes. This will then prevent another programer from changing the same
section of code (and therefor prevents one person's work from being lost).

Alsa 0.5.10 w/ Debian - was: Re: not working yet

Hi Frankie and all you alsa experts,

	The SpeakFreely website works fine for me too... just got the new version 7.1 from there.

	But I'm having a problem installing alsa v 0.5.10 under Debian 2.2, kernel v 2.2.18. I have a SB AWE64 card that worked fine with alsa under Redhat before. Forget the version I had. It appears that the problem is witht the modules, the isapnp seems to be initializing the card OK.

Here's the portion of the dmesg file which seems to indicate a problem witht he modules, (what does the message:
	 "snd: card 1 is out of range (0-0)" mean?
and the other ones:

Q:	How many members of the U.S.S. Enterprise does it take to change a
	light bulb?
A:	Seven.  Scotty has to report to Captain Kirk that the light bulb in
	the Engineering Section is getting dim, at which point Kirk will send
	Bones to pronounce the bulb dead (although he'll immediately claim
	that he's a doctor, not an electrician).  Scotty, after checking
	around, realizes that they have no more new light bulbs, and complains
	that he "canna" see in the dark.  Kirk will make an emergency stop at
	the next uncharted planet, Alpha Regula IV, to procure a light bulb
	from the natives, who, are friendly, but seem to be hiding something.
	Kirk, Spock, Bones, Yeoman Rand and two red shirt security officers
	beam down to the planet, where the two security officers are promply
	killed by the natives, and the rest of the landing party is captured.
	As something begins to develop between the Captain and Yeoman Rand,
	Scotty, back in orbit, is attacked by a Klingon destroyer and must
	warp out of orbit.  Although badly outgunned, he cripples the Klingon
	and races back to the planet in order to rescue Kirk et. al. who have
	just saved the natives' from an awful fate and, as a reward, been
	given all lightbulbs they can carry.  The new bulb is then inserted
	and the Enterprise continues on its five year mission.

Hi Terry!

You should make the alsa drivers with ./configure --with-isapnp=no.  This
should solve your problem I do believe.  Let me know if you have any other
issues.  Try removing the config.cache file and doing a make mrproper in
the alsa driver directory.

Hi Frank,

	I tried your suggestion, thinking that maybe not putting the "--with-isapnp=yes"  flag wasn't enough to stop it. Apparently that's not the prob.

	I'm new to Debian (used RedHat for sefveral years) and did install the alsa packages from the Debian 2.2 distribution. I think I've removed them all before installing the 0.5.10 sources but I'm not sure. Could the presence of some of the older packages interfere withthe new installation? I'm using apt-get/apt-cache to manage the Debian packages, but can't see a way to check what packages are actually installed on the system. Any thoughts there?

Hi:

Not sure what impact the alsa debian packages would have, since I've never
used them.  You can use dpkg to check for installed packages.  The best
command to use in this particular case, in my opinion, is:

dpkg --get-selections |grep -i alsa

This is a bit of a funny way to do it, but it allows you to be non-specific
with package names.

I think I've found your problem, however.  It is in /etc/modutils/alsa
which is read into /etc/modules.conf when you do an update-modules.  There
are two lines in there that read:

alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm1-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm1-oss

You need to remove the 1 from both these lines, ie, so it says
snd-pcm-oss.  There is also a line a bit further down that says:

options snd-card-sbawe snd_index=1 snd_id=CARD_1 snd_port=0x220 snd_mpu_port=0x300 snd_awe_port=-1 snd_irq=5 snd_dma8=1 snd_dma16=5 snd_mic_agc=0

snd_index needs to be 0 not 1.  Also, yours has snd_id set to  CARD_1 and
mine is set to "SB16" (yes, in quotes), but I don't think this will matter
at all.

So go edit /etc/modutils/alsa to fix these, then run update-modules and
that should do the trick.  I think.

I am beginning to feel like the kid at the back of the class who can only
say yah but this or yah but that.  I have tried clicking on the link since
it shows up as one in outlook express, I have tried typing it in letter by
letter being very careful to match case with the original text.  I use
internet explorer and ctrl-o to bring down the box to enter the address and
type http://www.speakfreely.org and in both cases, I get the message that
says the page can not be displayed.  If i am overlooking something that is
obvious to someone, please let me know.  Thanks much.

Bruce.  Looks like some name servers aren't hosting
www.speakfreely.org.  I find this strange.  The athome pittsburgh server
does have it but the  athome dallas name server does not.  I don't know
what's up with that.  you can get a copy from somewhere .  I don't know
where yet.  I'll put one somewhere!  Then I will let you know!

Hi Geoff and Frankie and other Alsa experts,

	Thanks Geoff for the suggestions you made (included below). On bootup I don't get any error messages now... no messages of any kind in fact, but the sound card shows up as correctly initialized and modules loaded in /proc/modules, /proc/interrupts and /proc/dma. I think from those /proc entries that all is loaded properly. However I stil can't get any sound to come from the speakers.
	I'm thinking that the channels are all muted (sys so in the alsa docs) be default. I found tht atthe aumix mixer that I used to use, no longer works withthe newer versions of alsa. The amixer from the alsa utils package doesn't seem to cooperate, or I'm just too dumb to understand something in the man pages. What mixer(s) are you folks using? I'm open for any suggestions at this point.

	The only sound I got fromthe the speakers is a "click" when rebooting the system. I assume that happens when the alsa driver gets unloaded?

Q:	How many members of the U.S.S. Enterprise does it take to change a
	light bulb?
A:	Seven.  Scotty has to report to Captain Kirk that the light bulb in
	the Engineering Section is getting dim, at which point Kirk will send
	Bones to pronounce the bulb dead (although he'll immediately claim
	that he's a doctor, not an electrician).  Scotty, after checking
	around, realizes that they have no more new light bulbs, and complains
	that he "canna" see in the dark.  Kirk will make an emergency stop at
	the next uncharted planet, Alpha Regula IV, to procure a light bulb
	from the natives, who, are friendly, but seem to be hiding something.
	Kirk, Spock, Bones, Yeoman Rand and two red shirt security officers
	beam down to the planet, where the two security officers are promply
	killed by the natives, and the rest of the landing party is captured.
	As something begins to develop between the Captain and Yeoman Rand,
	Scotty, back in orbit, is attacked by a Klingon destroyer and must
	warp out of orbit.  Although badly outgunned, he cripples the Klingon
	and races back to the planet in order to rescue Kirk et. al. who have
	just saved the natives' from an awful fate and, as a reward, been
	given all lightbulbs they can carry.  The new bulb is then inserted
	and the Enterprise continues on its five year mission.

Hi Terry!

Yes the alsamixer is the mixer of choice these days!

Or you could do it old school style like I used to do and just edit the
asound.conf.  Then run alsactl restore.

Oh one more thing to give you a heads up on.  THe modules.conf is built
everytime you boot so make sure you have everything in
/etc/modutils/aliases

Under debian, you don't need it all in aliases.  In fact, it's better if
it's not, as aliases can get replaced during an upgrade.  It will ask you
about it, but it's easier to let it do what it has to do rather than have
to manually change it out and then back in again.  Update-modules will put
in any files that are in /etc/modutils, so if you have a file called alsa
(like Terry does), it will get pulled in after aliases.

Note that this is how debian does it.  Don't know about anyone else.

You can easily make a file to keep the info in modules.conf. Just put a
text file in /etc/modutils directory. You can name it what you want. Then
if you run "update-modules" the information is imported into your
modules.conf for you. I didn't have much problem figuring that part out.

Modules.conf gets built from aliases and anything else in /etc/modutils,
which is not what I was saying.  When I dist-upgraded to frozen, I had to
shuffle out the ALSA stuff from /etc/modutils/aliases and shove it back in
again after the upgrade, as the new aliases was considerably different to
the old one.  More recently, I actually read the update-modules manpage,
and I see I can have the alsa stuff in its own file, safe from whatever is
done to aliases.

	Thanks to all you guys who've responded to this problem. I still haven't got a sound from my speakers and can't yet see why. I'll try to outline here what I've done and what seems to be happening:
Recap: Debian 2.2, kernel v2.2.18, soundcard SB AWE64 (ISA), alsa 0.5.10

	Compiled the kernel with sound support (compiled in, not as a module).

	Configured/Compiled Alsa driver, libs and utils (all 0.5.10).

	Ran ./snddevices script in the driver directory.

	On bootup- the isapnp initializes the SB-AWE card and the snd-card-sbawe module is loaded.
  If I'm not missing/misunderstanding something, this is verified in the /proc/modules, /proc/dma and /proc/interrupts database and the message in dmesg that the sound modules is loaded. (I attach these files for verification as well as the output from "lsmod" and "depmod").

	I don't think these unresolved references are alsa-related, or that they should affect the operation of the alsa system, Please correct me if I'm wrong here

	When I tyype as a normal user: "amixer set mic mute capture"  I get the message: "The ALSA sound driver was not detected in this system." The permissions on the amixer executable are executable for owner, group and world.
	Yet when I run the same command as root, I get the following message: "amixer: Unable to read group 'mic',0: Success"

Questions: 1) Does the info in the /proc pseudo filesystem indeed verify that the card is initialized and tha thte alsa driver module is loaded?
	2) Do the messages on STDERR when I run  "amixer" as a user/root  indecate that the alsa driver is NOT loaded? or that there is some permission that disallows a normal user from running the mixer, or somethig else is wrong?

Q:	How many members of the U.S.S. Enterprise does it take to change a
	light bulb?
A:	Seven.  Scotty has to report to Captain Kirk that the light bulb in
	the Engineering Section is getting dim, at which point Kirk will send
	Bones to pronounce the bulb dead (although he'll immediately claim
	that he's a doctor, not an electrician).  Scotty, after checking
	around, realizes that they have no more new light bulbs, and complains
	that he "canna" see in the dark.  Kirk will make an emergency stop at
	the next uncharted planet, Alpha Regula IV, to procure a light bulb
	from the natives, who, are friendly, but seem to be hiding something.
	Kirk, Spock, Bones, Yeoman Rand and two red shirt security officers
	beam down to the planet, where the two security officers are promply
	killed by the natives, and the rest of the landing party is captured.
	As something begins to develop between the Captain and Yeoman Rand,
	Scotty, back in orbit, is attacked by a Klingon destroyer and must
	warp out of orbit.  Although badly outgunned, he cripples the Klingon
	and races back to the planet in order to rescue Kirk et. al. who have
	just saved the natives' from an awful fate and, as a reward, been
	given all lightbulbs they can carry.  The new bulb is then inserted
	and the Enterprise continues on its five year mission.

What happens when you attempt to play a sound? Does the software chug away
as if it is playing?

Now if the above is true, I would recomend that you double check that the
speaker is plugged into the right jack and that it is powered. (Even
better if this card was working fine in Windows without any change outside
the OS. I would also recomend that you change consoles and go into
interactive mode of alsamixer. That may leave some more clues here.

Hi.  I think you should not build in the sound support, but leave it
as a module.  You should not have support for any cards in the kernel,
just sound support.  Then compile and see what happens.

Also, be sure that /usr/include/linux and /usr/include/asm are
directories pointing at /usr/src/linux/include/linux and
/usr/src/linux/include/asm-386 respectively.

The sound card works perfectly nder Win98 (dual boot system here). How do you get an "interactive" mode on the amixer program? This is amixer from the alsa-utils v0.5.10. The man page says nothing about an interactive mode... or are you thinking of the older aumix mixer? I used to use that one, but it doesn't work withthe newer alsa versions.

I would recomend that you try playing a sound by starting a MP3 playing
with something like mpg123. Then switch consoles and type amixer. Or you
may want to try alsamixer. It is quite speach friendly.

	I remember these links in the README in /usr/src/linux a few versions ago, but they are not mentioned in the current README's. Are they really necessary? If so, which way are the links pointing? Is the link in /usr/include to the dir in usr/src/linux/include or vice versa? My system currently has a link from /usr/src/linux/include/asm to /usr/src/linux/include/asm-i386, but hte /usr/include directories are separate ie no links to or from the /usr/src/linux directory tree. Since this is not mentioned in the README anymore, have things changed to make the links unnecessary?

	I'm wondering if there is some permission that is set wrong somewhere in my system because I can run the amixer command as "root" with no errors but when run as "terry" the amixer command shows:

	The ALSA sound driver was not detected in this system.
on STDERR.

	The snd-card-sbawe module is definitely loaded.  It shows up in the lsmod output.

	Even unmuting/setting volume the devices as "root" doesn't allow any sound to come fromthe card/speakers. I know the hardware is OK 'cause it works under Win98..

	 I  configured/installed the alsa-driver as "root". Shoule it be done as a normal user? or even can it be?

	Maybe something is wrong in the part of /etc/modules.conf related to the snd-card-sbawe module.  Here's the "alsa" file from the /etc/modutils directory:

Hi Terry:

I think your alsa drivers are in fact working.   However, the default state
is for all channels to be muted.  You were on the right track with amixer,
though mic needs to be written MIC not mic.  Amixer is annoyingly case
sensitive like that.  Type amixer and pipe it through more to see how your
channels are set and how to spell the names in order to change them.  You
can alternatively edit /etc/asound.conf and type 'alsactl restore' to load
your new settings, though you might want to use a mixer anyway to fine tune
them.

There is indeed an interactive mixer called alsamixer, though aumix should
work if you have oss emulation (which you would want).  I found that
alsamixer would segfault when I tried to run it.  Kirk Reiser solved my
problem by suggesting I might have an old ncurses development library
installed.  If you get this problem, check to see that you have
libncurses5-dev installed, then it should run just fine after recompilation
of alsa-utils.

I have sound support built in to the kernel, so this seems not to
matter.  I would guess that if your kernel is compiling properly then the
includes must be OK.

As far as your user vs. root problem goes, remember the sound devices were
recreated with sndevices, so it's quite possible that user and group
details or permissions may have changed.  Make sure that your user account
has access to the devices.  I'd suggest making them group read/writeable
and put yourself in that group.

As for unmuting, remember you need to both unmute and set volumes for both
the master volume and one other source (e.g. pcm).  The need for this
should be pretty obvious.

	Yippee!!!! I finally got Alsa-0.5.10 working!!!!

Thanks very very much to all the help you guys gave me while I was figuring this one out.

	It appears (as Geoff says below) that it doesn't matter if the sound support is compiled into the kernel, or as a module. Just don't compile anything else into the kernel.

	In my case, the key turned out to be the fact that the devices in /dev were owned by root and in the audio group. No normal user could use them. By adding myself to the audio group, it all works!

I wonder if your failure to get speech when booting is because of one
or more of the following:

(1) You booted your DOS system with speech loaded and then tried to
    run loadlin -- the speakout has a problem with this.

The other possibility which comes to mind is that you are not doing
the corrrect boot sequence which is to boot the disk, wait till it
stops going, hit enter and then you hear the disk for a while and then
it should start talking.

sometimes it's a very long while, when I first installed I rebooted a couple
of times when using the downloaded root and boot disks. this isn't the way
you can expect it to work after all the install happens though. Also I use a
transport in dos and linux and when switching over from dos I have to shut
down the synth and turn it on to get a complete initialization before
speakup will speak to me.

Hi!

    I have tried all the suggestions up to this point and still with no
success.  The last thing I have tried is using Speak Freely using the
address and port number I was told should work.  I think the version I
downloaded is 7.1 for windows.  I have been working with this computer in
this endeavor for about a month.  I think I will just have to conclude that
it just won't work unless I know more about what I am doing.  My next plan
is to build a computer to run Linux.  I don't know much about this either
but it looks more promising than trying to get it to work onthis one.  I
appreciate all the help that I have found here.  When I do get a computer
that looks promising, I will start from the beginning and try it again.
Right now, what I need is something I can do successfully.  I will be back
when I know more about what I am doing.  I have gotten some good ideas from
people writing about other topics on this list as well.  I thank everyone
who has invested time and energy in helping me directly and indirectly.

Hi!

I added the line
serial 0 9600
to the syslinux.cfg file like you suggested when I called.  Well, it speaks
up through the boot prompt.  After entering the line starting with linux,
there is disk activity and finally a message about an error and a prompt to
press any key to reboot.  When you press a key, it starts over.  I saw
various labels in the syslinux.cfg file and just for grins, I tried them
instead of typing linux.  The behavior was identical to typing linux.  If I
typed any other string, it said kernel image not found and returned to the
boot prompt.  I don't know if it is significant but pressing the F6 key
produced the same resultas typing linux instead of displaying the file that
was associated with it like the other function keys did.  All of the other
function keys spoke the contents of the file that were associated with them.

I hope there is something here that makes sense to someone.

I am sorry it took me so long to get this information.  I could not just
figure out a way to capture this in a file so I had to physically navigate
all the items under the device manager tab under settings, control panel,
system.  Here is the information about my computer that may help in
determining the problem.  It may not be of general interest so if not, it
will provide a cure for insomnia.

Bruce,

Your hardware list looks pretty generic to me. As for the bus mastering
controller, it is very standard. The two ide interfaces under it are child
devices. As such either controller is capable of taking advantage of the
bus mastering ability. This speeds up disk operations and offloads some
processor load.

If you write Frank, I am sure he will help you. He is a pretty sharp
guy. Looking back over the previous posts, is there any chance we can find
out what the error message is before the computer reboots?

Hi!

It is a very generic error message.  It first says that it is loading then
it says boot err insert another disk and try again.  That may not be the
exact text.  I will get that and send it too but it has that feel to it.

Hi Bruce:  That message looks like the disk was currupted during the
writing process.  Diskettes can be such a pain in the bleep.  Is there
a way you could try to start the process from your hard drive?  Once
again Frank will probably know the details.  I'd download new images
in any case.

I will try downloading new images but booting from the hard drive failed
with what looked like more serious problems.  That is why I tried booting
from the diskette.  I don't remember now what the message was.  I had to
have someone read the message.  I will try it again with the new image.

The process has not got far enough along to have errors like that.  I have

In order to start the Debian installer from DOS mode, you must have
both the HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE drivers loaded.  If HIMEM.SYS isn't
already loaded from your C:\CONFIG.SYS file, add this line to
CONFIG.SYS:

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS

Then if EMM386.EXE isn't being loaded from CONFIG.SYS, add this line:

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS

Alternatively, you can boot your computer into a command prompt in
safe mode.  To do this, you press F8 as soon as the computer starts
booting from the hard disk.  Then you'll get a menu where you can
choose "Safe mode, command prompt only".  But you can't get any speech
or Braille output at this point, so you'll probably need sighted
assistance.

Speaking of weird images, I tried one that was on a bad disk and which I
downloaded using the ftp functions in ie, and no go. used a real ftp client
and worked on the same diskette.

I looked at the Debian web site and on the Debian distribution disks.  I did
not find anything on the web site.  I found some possibilities on the disks
but the ones on the first three disks were .deb files.  There appear to be
some possibilities on the source disks but I don't have a way of compiling
them and I am not really sure what I should look for.  I looked for cd*.*
and found something like cdao, cdread cdwrite and cdrecord.  I think that is
what they were.  I am not sure what I should be looking for or how to get
executables for them.  The source files are compressed but I think I can
handle themwith WINZIP if I know which ones to expand.  I can try to expand
them all but if someone knows what I need, it could save me a lot of time
digging through the documentation if there is any available.  It appears
that the boot image is not findable as a file on the CD either so it looks
like I need to read the boot image through some other mechanism and I am not
sure that any of those programs are what I need to to that.  I would
appreciate any suggestions.

Hi!

Since I have tried so many variations of getting Debian to work, I am wondering about one more option.  I have booted Debian without speakup from CD.  How much trouble would it be to create a bootable CD with Debian with speakup.  I don't know the boot process for CD's but maybe if I can create a bootable CD it might confirm a theory I am beginning to have about my problem.  I am beginning to think there is something about the floppy drive itself that is getting involved with this problem.

You may want to considder ftp.com. It is in dos. Load windows, go to a dos
box, then type ftp. push h at the prompt for a list of commands you can use.

have reported problems with downloading with IE.  The exact reason for this
is not yet clear, though I for one wouldn't put it past microsoft to put
out a defective product.  So, if you have some other means for getting
these files, I'd suggest using it.

you use the web based index or the FTP site.

I used internet explorer 5.5 under windows 98 second edition to download the
files.  I started at www.linux-speakup.org and followed links to the debian
disks.  Is there a better way to do this?

Please bear with a couple not very smart questions.  I have instructions for
using ftp and downloading the files from the pub/speakup/disk/debian
directory.  Does that access the same files that I was getting to by using
the http://www.linux-speakup.org address in internet explorer?  Would I get
the same result by using internet explorer and going to the ftp:// address?

To answer the question about someone else looking at the screen, I can
occasionally get someone to do that but not consistently.

I made the change to the install.bat file as I understood it and can only say that it didn't work.  I will include it in its current state so that someone can determine if I have misread or overlooked something.  I am beginning to suspect something more fundamental with the computer itself.  Right now though, here is the install.bat file from the Debian disks area with the modification to specify the serial port.  Keep in mind that in install.bat, it is all on one line.

dosutils\loadlin linux root=/dev/ram initrd=images-1.44/root.bin speakup_ser=0

I am attempting to do this with no speech program or synthesizer driver program loaded so I have no way of knowing what is going on on the screen so I don't know what additional information I can get to help solve this problem.  I am prepared to look at bios settings but I have no idea of how to access them or if I can do it at all without some sighted assistance.  I don't like continuing to bore you all with this problem.  Thanks much for all the helpful and friendly comments.  I hope that we can figure out what is going on with this so I can see what Linux is like with speech and begin to write my own programs.
