I just downloaded grml2011.12 (both 64 and 32bit versions) and noticed that their "large" distribution (around 700mb of iso) is no longer available. They do not mention speakup support in their list of boot options. I am wanting to use this as you can load the squashfs into ram and have it run from there; I usually remaster it so as additional programmes that I have included are available, and we have software speech, instead of having to rely on a hardware synth. I might have to look for another distro, and hope that it is possible to load the squashfs filesystem into ram as well. Useful to do such things as running Terabyte's Image for Linux and create BD backups is an example of the kinds of uses I have. I ran: modprobe speakup_soft espeakup And I got speech, but it does not echo my typing, nor can I find a way of reviewing what is on the screen. I am familiar with Orca, in Ubuntu, but this has me stumped. This is on an Asus ePc which runs XP okay, I don't remember if I upgraded the RAM to 1GB or 2GB, but either way, it should be enough. How do I control the speech better? I actually downloaded this to take a look. I waited for the jingle and typed modprobe speakup_soft followed by espeakup and after I pressed enter it did eventually come up speaking, but it had an error saying that it could not access a certain source, but I just pressed return and it started working, review keys etc. Now I'm just looking for how to install it on the hard drive partition. In the FAQ of GRML, it looks as though it is not obvious. Hi there Well I tried grml2hd and it said that the command was not recognized. It looks like the install process has changed over the last few years though. My process did not look anything like what Michael Whapples did in 2008. It looks like I have a system set up now, but I cannot seem to figure out how to turn on speakup. I tried what worked in the live cd: modprobe speakup_soft espeakup But no beans. It does not recognize the command espeakup. You know...I just looked at the GRML FAQ, and it looks like there is a way to install GRML to a hard drive, but they do not explain how to do so there. And apparently it is not supported. So the only straightforward approach is that of installing a straight Debian system using grml-debootstrap. I am just guessing, then, that the edition of Debian which is installed does not contain the espeakup package installed...I am not sure. If I can do it tonight, I'll try and install it in a virtual machine and see what happens. I could have sworn I saw a grml2hd script mentioned somewhere. Sorry about that. I actually installed the grml2usb package in my Ubuntu system and it worked just fine. It is actually what I used to create my live GRML USB system with, as UNetbootin's menu was a beast. When I say a "beast", I mean that it displayed every possible boot option for each architecture, as I used the hybrid image). It was awful! But grml2usb worked just fine. Hi, I have had to run the latest grml2hd from /etc/shared/grml2hd I believe, though this may not be the correct path. It would appear that you are not able to run it from anywhere anymore. Also, I get frustrated at the fact that they are not running the same script to initialize or unmute the soundcard that they do when you boot the live cd, as sound is muted on a fresh grml2hd installation. I happen to have just written a wiki page on using the accessibility features of the latest grml release. Its on the web site of the International Association of visually Impaired Technologists. See: http://wiki.iavit.org/index.php/Accessing_grml I think you may have downloaded an older version of grml though. The current release does not have large, medium, and small versions. The 32 bit download is 315Mb. It should beep at the isolinux prompt and it should play a 4 note tune through the PC speaker when its finished booting. Anyway, to answer your questions, the speakup modules have not been removed but they are no longer built into the kernel. So that means you have to load them after boot.
