Laptops with serial ports

Morning guys,
I'm in the market for a new laptop and I know this will be hard to find, but are there any laptops out there you guys have experience with or know of that come with a serial port?
I'd rather not have to use software speech on a lptop unless I have too.
Also this makes it a bit hard to do n install with out speech as well if I'm not able to get a serial port.

Tom,

I just bought a Dell D400 that has a serial port. I will list 
here the pros and cons of the system as I have found them.

 The system has a 1.8 Pentium-M processor, it came with 256M ram 
but I upgraded to 768 by adding a 512M module.  It has a 60G HD, 
1 serial port, 1 actual usb and a special dell usb port which has 
power for the external devices, such as the Cd-ROM. The monitor is 
12.1 inches and it's only 3.7 pounds.
The pcmcia is only a type 1, which means that it only takes the 
thin cards and not the thicker type.

The audio chip is an Intel and uses the i8x module under Linux. 
This means that you are going to have to live with single channel 
or semi-multi channel using the aoss stuff.

The modem is a win modem and according to the skuttle butt on the 
web is supported after a fashion, but you have to pay 20 bucks 
for the driver. I forget the name of the project, but a quick 
google could find it.

The Intel wireless B/G is supported by a module which is not yet 
in the kernel, so you will have to rebuild it for each new kernel 
you cook.

All in all this little speed deamon meets all my wants and needs. 
I love the size and weight and would recommend a refurb from dell 
if you are looking. They start at 1700 standard, but I got this 
little baby for 899 off of their refurb site. And it even came 
with a 1 year warranty.

Hi -- I have 3 laptops, all of which have serial ports, because that's what 
I requested when I called for product info before i ordered them.  If you 
call dell or hp or toshiba or whatever and just ask for models that have 
serial ports they will definitely quote you models and pricing info.  I had 
no trouble, and again, all the companies I talked to had models with serial 
connectors.

There's a link on the debian page to vendors that provide laptops with linux.
One of these may be able to help you.  Also, I just baught a del Enspiron 600M.
This has a serial port but look on the linux laptops site for any notes specific
to your distrobution with this moddle.  The modem probably isn't supported and
try to get it with a wireless that is supported if you need wireless.  It was
not cheap though.

Hi Tom:
The Dell latitude tipically has a serial port.  They are bigger laptops, so there is room for things like partports and 
serials.  I have a latitude C840 and it has one, I know someone  that has one of the newer latitudes and it has one also...

Looking at retiring my old Latitude cpt in favor of something a bit 
faster.  What current laptops do people here have experience with?  My 
main requirement is something with a serial port, and I'd like to find 
something under $1,000.  Any input would be apreciated.

You might be hard pressed to find a laptop nowadays with serial ports!  An
alternative option would be to use a USB to serial converter.  The main
question is, I guess, would Speakup be able to use a USB interface even
though the converter should by rights show up as a serial port?  I haven't
tried using USB to serial converters under any of the Linux flavors and
probably don't fully understand all the ins and outs, etc -- hence my point
here may be a mute one.

The problem with usb to serial is I don't know if it'll give me a 
serial console to do an install...I know it won't work with speakup 
compiled into the kernel since the usb subsystem doesn't load early 
enough.

I actually did find 2 laptops with serial, the Latitude d820 and the 
Inspiron 600m.

I stand to be corrected, or someone else's experience may not match
what I seem to recall, but I do seem to recall modifying a slackware
boot floppy way back when, to launch agetty on /dev/usb/ttyS0, (or
whatever the usb serial ports are called, I haven't used mine in a
while). I seem to recall that it did work too. My recollection may be
wrong though.

How about using a serial port on a pcmcia card? If it's still possible
to get those, they should work with speakup too I think.

My experience with PCMCIA serial ports is that Speakup loads too early. The
kernel needs to load socket drivers and card services and such.

But what's worked for me is to use BRLTTY on a PCMCIA or USB serial port and
use Speakup on the hardware serial port, if you are lucky enough to have a
laptop with one.

If you don't have a hardware port and your laptop can use a port replicator
or docking station you can sometimes locate one of those on ebay especially
if it isn't a brand-new laptop.  I have a Sony Vaio and a Toshiba Libretto
which don't have serial ports but their docking stations do.

If you don't want to haul around a hefty docking station, then use it for
just installing/troubleshooting; get your software speech working and then
ditch the docking station.

Another trick is to install on a hard drive that's temporarily cabled to a
PC with a serial port. Then install the hard drive in your laptop.  To find
an engineer you trust to do this if you aren't mechanical enough yourself,
make friends with your local ham radio club. Luckily I'm married to an
electrical engineer so moving IDE drives around just goes on the "honey-do"
list.

As for PCMCIA ports they are still around. But you have to google for
surplus computer parts. Here in Silicon Valley I trust Weird Stuff Warehouse
and Surplus Computers -- both stores do worldwide web sales. They're also
good places for docking stations, but when you buy a surplus peripheral, do
your homework and be sure you know the exact part/model number.

How about compiling speakup as modules, and loading the synth module
after the pcmcia services are up and running? No, it doesn't mean
speech right from boot up, but it still does mean being able to use
your hardware synth if you prefer that over the software synths.

I don't see why that shouldn't work.  You'd just have to be sure the
device was plugged in before it attempted to load speakup.

last year I got a del enspiron 600M with a cerial port.  If you google there 
notes on how to get this laptop to work with linux.  That moddle last year sold 
for 1300 however.

What is the reason for serial port? If it is to be able to install linux 
with speakup, then would it be possible to choose something with a suitable 
sound card and use software speech in something like GRML. I think people 
were saying in discussions about GRML that it is possible to install debian 
from that, and it should most certainly be possible to install gentoo with 
that (as I think all the install stuff is in the stage file that you 
decompress to the hard disk and and the speech is provided by the linux CD).

As I remember last year when my old HP laptop got stolen, it was very hard 
to find a replacement with a serial port (although I did find one at Dell, 
the inspiron 510m (I think no longer in production)). Sorry I can't help too 
much with that part, all the ones I can find seem out of your price limit 
(evesham computers have one with a serial port, but approx 1200 
www.evesham.com). May be one of these companies that can build laptops to 
order could do something, but I think they will be too expensive if you need 
to stick to that limit.

Doesn't the sound card require a driver? At what point is that loaded?  The 
serial port is probably not essential for any purpose other than boot time 
access, so for other peripherals a USB or pcmcia to serial adaptor is 
sufficient.

My comment about the sound card was more to do with using something like 
GRML, where the CD contains sound drivers, speakup and software speech 
components, so Alex would be able to install a distribution of linux using 
software speech. Admittedly this is not quite as good as using a hardware 
synth and speakup for install as it requires the system to boot without any 
problems (at least problems that don't prevent it booting and don't affect 
the sound card), before speech can be started. I would guess that it would 
be easier to find a modern laptop that meets those requirements than the 
requirement of a serial port (particularly considering his budget).

that have serial ports so will probably go with one of those.

GRML can be found at www.grml.org
I think it contains speakup in the standard CD, well it says the following 
in the features section at their site "usability by the visually impaired 
right out of the box" so it must have some screenreader. I just don't know 
as I haven't used it myself, but have read messages to this list before 
about GRML.

Another project that is a bootable CD version of linux with software speech 
output is oralux at www.oralux.org but I think their aims are slightly 
different, to simplify linux for the newby.

My first steps were with this distro. Although it offers to do
knoppix-like installation, I slightly modified an installation script
and did debian-like installation. But this installation is not very true
installation, it better looks like simple copying of working system. But
I believe, it is the only way to do the linux installation using
software speech.

contains software speech, so the actual installation is spoken using 
software speech (if you are installing a distro with it). Admittedly if you 
want something that automatically provides software speech without needing 
to issue any bash commands, then oralux is the one, as GRML you need to 
start speechd-up as I remember. Suppose if you felt like it, you could 
modify GRML to contain a script to start speechd-up though.

speech on my old dell laptop and another slightly newer inspiron and 
the sound drivers were pretty much broken (speech worked, but every 
few words I'd hear a loud crackling noise).  Also tried booting it on 
a compaq proliant and got a kernel panic saying htere was no root 
device.  Booting it up on my athlon box gave no speech at all even 
though both the onboard sound and second pci soundcard are supported 
by linux.

I couldn't get grml 0.7 to speak with a doubletalk LE on a dell 620. But 
0.6 worked fine.  Lots of other things didn't work in 0.6 because of 
marginal support in 0.6 for some of the new hardware in dell's 620s.


I'm really in a fix here,If I have to install Windows on one of these 
620s I don't think I could do it. I've been able to install linux via a 
serial console But I haven't found a live CD that works.
  I either have no speech or the drivers are too old.
