Subject: Back from the "parted" beyond.

 Hello listers.
Last week, I posted a question about partitioning a drive with Windows
already on it, and Parted was recommended. I downloaded it from the
speakup site and attempted to use it. Well I am now, sadly, only a little
sadly, "parted" from my windows partition. (grin)
I'm not going to blame the program, rather just my ineptitude and lack of
experience. So, now that I was back to square one, and I am not certain
whan I can get sighted assistance to reinstall the MS monster, I
partitioned the drive in 2 parts. The first 10 G for the eventual
Windows, and the remainder including a good size 345MB swap partition.
for linux. I have installed Slackware 8.0 on it, but I have a few
questions. When I go to use the installation boot disk with speakup on
it, after I type "ramdisk speakup_synth=dtlk", it loads up but it takes
something on the order of 10 minutes to do so.
this is a 500 MHZ Pentium 3 with 128 MB of ram. Should I rebuild the
installation floppy, or is there something I should type differently at
the boot prompt?
I must say, though, it is nice to watch Linux purr along on that as
oposed to this little P166 with only 40 MB of ram.
Thanks, and please excuse the rambling.

I'm not sure, but what your problem might be is that Speakup is talking far
slower than the system is booting. That is, since the speech buffer gets
full and takes a long time to clear the system doesn't boot until speakup
stops talking. Solution is to either keep your finger on the control key,
or else press numpad enter. This last command silences speech until another
key is pressed. After waiting about 30 seconds press numpad 8 to read the
current line and if it is the login prompt then you've succesfully booted.

Let us know if this works.

Actually I was talking about the installation boot disk where speakup is.
When it asked for the root floppy, it loaded it into ramdisk quite
normally.

Sorry my explanation was incorrect. the big delay occurs before speakup
starts talking. the floppy sits there and just clunks away for about 7 to
10 minutes, then eventually speakup starts up, and the installation
proceeded as normal.

Hi

I've never experienced a computer taking 10 minutes to boot. Something is wrong here. Even when a check is forced, I wouldn't have thought that it took 10 minutes to boot. If that's what is happening, it raises the question: How are you shutting down the computer?

Have you looked at dmesg? To see what was going on during the boot process?

Didn't you want to boot with lilo? Is there a reason for using the floppy to boot?

When you gave the boot disk your paremeters, and when it started to talk to you, did you hit numpad enter at that point, or did you just let it sit there and talk until it asked for the root disk?

Hmmm, that's kind of strange. I'm assuming you're using the speakup.i or speakup.s that comes on the slackware cd?

I believe it may have been the speakup.i that I downloaded, but just for
grins, I may create another disk and see if that happens. It's a bit of a
moot point now that everything is up and running but I'm curious.

Hi

Well I don't know if it'll help but you might try specifying the comport by adding: speakup_ser="?" replacing "?" with the value 0 - 3 depending upon what port your synth is located.

Dan -
I wonder if it is possible that your computer has a boot sequence
that causes it to attempt booting from your HD and/or CD before
trying the floppy drive? The boot sequence is selectable in the
CMOS setup, and if your floppy were not the first boot device, it
could take somewhat longer to get started - although 7 to 10
minutes is beyond the pale...

I don't think so, Chuck. I can boot with a dos floppy and it's fine. I
can also boot using a Linux Lilo boot disk and everything is fine. Only
the installation boot disk with speakup.i on it has done this. I am
tempted to go up to the ftp site and snag the one on line and see if
there's anything different. Perhaps the one from the CD I burned is a bit
funky or something.

It sounds like your floppy drive is dying. As floppy drives get older they
seam to have longer access times. Also try a different floppy disk.
You might try a different disk first, and if that doesn't fix the problem
start observing how a Windows boot disk loads.
If All the disks take a long time to load like i said there is some chance
the floppy drive is starting to go.

Hi dan, the reason for this might be bios related.
your bios might be thinking that your floppy drive is a 1.2 Mb drive
instead of a 1.44 Mb drive.

Well Linux shows it as a 1.44 MB, and other floppies boot just fine. I
think I'm going to try the whole process again with a later version of
rawrite and see if that makes any difference.
thanks for the suggestion, though.

One thing to keep in mind, which I am sure you already know, is
that rawrite is very touchy and needs the undivided attention of
your processor. That means you must disable your speech while
rawrite is executing. If you let your computer talk while rawrite
is executing you are virtually guaranteed to have disk errors in
the resulting floppy.

Hi

Well I'm tired of promoting rawwrite for Windows, many of these problems just don't occur. Be careful that it is a newer version and not for different size disks.

Perhaps I should ask Kirk to put a copy in the goodies directory.

I also wonder if this is actual timing. Sorry, but working in computer
support, 7 minutes is seldom more then 2. It does take a long time before
your computer starts talking when booting from a floppy. A huge chunk of
the floppy is read before the kernel starts decompressing. Then the thing
has to decompress and it takes a long time.

If you measured 7 minutes with a watch it is too long. If it just seems
like forever it is probably normal.

Well actually I didn't time it to the minute, but I am fairly sure it was
longer than 3, where as on my other machine with only 40 MB of ram, the
process might take a minute or so.
As I said, it's relatively unimportant unless I need to do an installation
in a *hurry*, but the oddity was what had me curious, since now Linux is
installed and running just fine.

Loading linux from floppy definitely takes much longer than loading DOS
takes. Still, 7 to 10 minutes is beyond the pale, as Chuck said. Are there
errors being reported?

PS: As one who recommended parted, I'm sorry you lost your Windows
partition. It is true that parted does not protect one against mistakes
like some of the commercialware does.

Chuck,
I just thought you might like to know that I've used rawrite with 4 disks while provox7 was running and talking, and they all booted and worked fine. So, I guess there is one exception to the rule (grin).

That is interesting, Greg -

Provox takes extreme measures not to hog the processor, but it
has still caused problems for me on some systems. Perhaps it
depends on the synthesizer also. A related reliable failure for
me has been when booting Linux from a loadlin in DOS. The loadlin
banner and credits screen rapidly fills the synthesizer buffer
and keeps it talking during the time the Linux kernel is testing
for the presence of the synth, and as a result the kernel cannot
find the synthesizer!!! Another case where the speech has to be
silenced before letting loadlin execute. Maybe the loadlin screen
output could be redirected to a null device - I have not tried
that - but provox also has a command line parameter to shut the
speech up, so it can be included in a batch file.

The synth used was a doubletalk pc.
As for running provox when loading a kernel with loadlin, I've found that's not a good idea, since it freezes my boxes when I try that.
My solution is to simply make a batch file with speech, reboot so that no provox tsr is present (which also causes problems if it is), and run the batch file. When I do that, everything goes flawlessly.

fHr
i Janina.
Well it isn't as critical as it might have been a couple of months ago.
My wife and I do use the computer for banking and scanning, but now all
that mission-critical stuff is on her machine.
I just chalked it up to dumb luck and once I checked that the drive was ok
and all that, I proceeded to install Linux on the back 10 gigs, leaving
the front for Windows. The gentleman who may be able to help
me with re-installation of windows is an ardent Linux user, so he won't be
stricken at the site of the Lilo prompt.

I think I'm really beginning to enjoy using Linux. I'm even getting used
to the way Speakup works in Pine.
I've become fairly competent with Windows over the years, but always that
thing hangs over me, "if you accidentally or otherwise blow it away,
you're sunk until you get eyes in there." Such was not the case with
Linux thanks to the efforts of people like Kirk and others. I know it's
probably a goofy thing to be insistent about, but it was nice to actually
install it from the bottom up and have it working.
Anyway, enough of my ranting, but I just wanted to let you know I'm not
presicely heart broken over the loss of my Windows partition. BTW, I like
the idea of a beep in the booting message for Lilo.

When I first installed win 95 and 98 with sighted help, I had my bns640 set to go, and wrote down all you're asked for and what the options are and how to navigate them via keyboard. I've reinstalled both versions of windows several times since, and my instructions haven't let me down.

Dan,

Another strategic place to put a control-g beep is in the file
/etc/issue, which contains the login prompt. I put one just in
front of the "W" of "Welcome". If you kill your speech during the
bootup messages, that beep will tell you when it is okay to enter
your login ID.

A public thanks to Janina for some help given off list.

I discovered that going to links work better when all non-URL characters are
not included. Guess I'm such a clutz that a simple copy & paste got out of
hand.

I found some good info but would still like the CD you mentioned.

Ooopps......

That play command should be in rc.local and not in /etc/issue (which is
sourced by /etc/rc.local).

How exactly does one put the bell in a file. I have never gotten it to
work without using a program to generate char(7) or something. Thanks.

No problem. I'll burn a few CDR's this week--unless we get fully snowed in
here in DC which has never happened in history, though I do recall this
town closing down over a few inches.

Right now, it's just rain--but it's early yet.

I used vi, and it worked just fine. Also I think that "~G" without the quotes might work as well.

Yes, I've also had trouble with this. I do one of two things:

Use echo from the command line which is very cludgy;

Copy my /boot/message file and tweak, tweak, tweak, which is very cludgy;

Interesting. I wasn't aware that you could run play in that situation.
My wife and I have a favorite wav file we use in place of the MS default
one for Win startup...
I'll have to mess around with that.

Actually I do that too in my rc.local file, but I use a clip of
Linas Torvalds telling me how to pronounce "Linux" as my
favorite. Care to share that JAWS wav file for us non-windows
types?

Thomas -
I use "ed" for most configuration chores and it works fine. It
allows you to search/replace control chars without grumbling
about it. Most editors will intercept control chars and interpret
them as possible editing commands, but ed does not.
