List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: Dan, Another strategic place to put a control-g beep is in the file /etc/issue, which contains the login prompt. I put one just in front of the "W" of "Welcome". If you kill your speech during the bootup messages, that beep will tell you when it is okay to enter your login ID.
