My first question is kind of stupid. How do you go about starting gnome?
and second, which voice for festival does gnopernicus use by default?

First you should make sure accessability is enabled by using the 
command: gconftool-2 --type bool --set 
/desktop/gnome/interface/accessibility true

Geez I've been out of pocket for some time and I assume Gnopernicous has 
been officially released? If so where could I obtain more info as this type 
of program might be handy for some plans I have.

Scott, if you install gnome 2.4, you will get gnopernicus as part of
gnome.

Thanks Kenny. I will assume that is available as a debian pkg and I'll 
assume I would get it if I'm running the sid or woody version? I won't know 
much till I resolve the connection problems with my cable modem and get my 
Linux box talking to their dhcp server. I might be on track, but won't know 
till this weekend as I have to sit down and do some fresh installing as my 
hacking probably has messed up some stuff.<grin> The issue might be that my 
modem wasn't getting connected to their server, but they claim they can 
ping it now so will have to wait and see if this does it. If not I'll 
switch to plan X once I figure out what X will be.<grin>

Oh, is theer some document that will explain what I need to read that will 
get me up to speed on how it works , how to configure stuff etc. perhaps. 
Maybe I'll try to find the Gnopernicous site and do some rtfm there.

Hi.  I'm afraid there aren't any "official" Debian packages for Gnome
2.4.  Woody ships with Gnome 1.44.  There are back ports of Gnome 2.2
for Woody, but I haven't seen any 2.4 packages for Woody.
Sid still has Gnome 2.2 until Sarge gets all the Gnome 2.2 packages.
Once Gnome 2.2 gets into Sarge, the developers plan to start uploading
Gnome 2.4 to Sid.  There is an unofficial set of Gnome 2.4 packages for
Sid, but I haven't tried them.

I don't know of a doc that explains it all in one file.  Once you're
back up, drop by the reflector and Gene or I can help you get it
working.

Gnome for redhat 9

[Sina Bahram]

Hello, I wanted to know how I could get gnome 2.4 on redhat 9. I have
downloaded all the latest updates and rpms for redhat 9, and I am
running it on a box with 800mhz and 384 megs of ram. I would appreciate
how to get it up and running so I could get gnoppernicus. If anyone
could give me some details, I would appreciate it.

I am not familiar with the apt-get command seeing as how I am a total
newbie to linux and in turn to redhat; however, when I did that command,
I received a command not found error. Could you tell me how else to go
about this?

Ok, I did that, but now I have a few problems. I got apt4rpm. I ran
apt-get and upgraded the packages, and installed all the latest stuff it
had to offer. However when I type

apt-get install gnome

I get an error saying that while gnome was found in the database it can
not be installed. Now I read another message on here about changing a
line in my sources.list file, but this is a little difficult for me to
do because of my unfamiliarity with text editers like VI. I tried ftping
the file to an ftp I have access too, then downloading it onto my
windows box, changing the appropriate line, and then uploading it back;
however, as expected the file didn't work when I tried
 
apt-get install gnome

It said some error on a line, which I gathered to simply be a difference
in line breaks or any other linux/windows incompatibility. So is there
anyway I can get this sources.list file, from an ftp, since I can use
ftp when I ssh into the box I'm trying to install gnome on. 

Sorry if this is unclear, and I am extremely fustraited at myself, since
if I had to do something like this in windows, it would take me the all
of three seconds or less *sigh*. But I'm willing to do whatever, so
please let me know.

The best fix for this problem is to learn something like vi; here are a
few tips.

To open a file for editing, type

vi /etc/apt/sources.list

obviously substituting the appropriate path for this file.

Next, press escape so you are in the right mode.  You can use your arrow

If you want to insert text where the cursor is, press i and type what you
want.  Press escape when done so you get out of edit mode.

To delete a character at the cursor position, press x.

and press enter to write the file and then quit.

The vi man page has a basic overview of commands that are useful several
pages down.  The commands are a bit odd but once you are used to them, it

Hey Scott,
I appreciated the apt4rpm info as well--its been a while since I used it.
As for your dhcp problem, you should run dhcpcd which you should definitely
have if you are running a Redhat box.  Sometimes when you are switching from
a WINDBLOWS machine to a linux box on comcast you need to unplug your cable
modem for about 45 minutes and try again.
Then try the following command:

Note the uppercase H.  That has always worked for me.

thanks actually its a new not yet installed Debian box and its actually 
Adelphia. Sorry I moved from Laurel to Mount Airy so different cable 
company and I can't get DSL as it doesn't exist up here yet. Actually my

Well, I hadn't read the entire thread when I replied--my bad.  So, I guess
you are in Carroll County.  I love Carroll County and would live there
myself--but I wouldn't like that 2 hour commute!  I lived in Eldersburg for
six years and my father lives in Westminster.  Some of the Commcast support
people are really nasty when you tell them you are running Linux.  I'm glad

I'm actually in Frederick County, but very very near the Caroll County 
line. Mount Airy sits in both counties and incredibly Howard County is 
mighty close and Montgomery isn't all that far away. We're kind of in a 
cross roads. Well the Adelphia folk haven't been to bad, but when I 
asked one of them if they had a time server, but note I said NTP server, 
I was sent immediately to second level support. I think the idea of time 
server or ntp just blew the dudes mind.<grin>
Well they didn't have one so I use the server from my former ISP.

Psu.edu runs a publicly accessible ntp server. In fact, there is a
clock setting script which someone posted here a while back, and that I run
every 24 hr to set my clock. The script uses the psu.edu server.

If you're interested, I can send you the script privately, so as not
to clutter the list with something that's already in the archive.

I want to install it but will have a lot of questions when I start.  Um,
that is I assume I'll have a lot any way, I was told its extreemly
difficult.

Finally, Winblows has made an absolute mess of writing CDs.  I have read
hat 8 installed but cant install red hat nine until I get the Iso's onto
CD.  Can any one tell me of a *simple* or reasonably easy method of
extracting from izo to a CD in red hat 8?

No need to extract things from the iso image.

Assuming your cd-writer is setup properly (see the cd-writing HOWTO),
you can use cdrecord to burn the cd under GNU/Linux. See the cdrecord
man page to find out what options are available, and how to specify
your burner device.

Is it tech support or customer disservice that says they can ping your
modem? I had a similar problem with my isp, and a call to buth tech and
customer got me no where with them denying ever hearing of any downtime but
that was bs since I'd heard a lot of other people having the same problem in
this area and calling support.

The incredible thing is they were actually trying to do their level best to 
help me out. They even took time thismorning to make sure the dns server 
I'm accessing can resolve linux-speakup.org correctly. Kirk was kind enough 
to give me a directory path I could get the base file for my Debian install 
as the Debian site doesn't seem to have what I need. Couldn't get this 
working so had Adelphia verify things were ok with their dns server. Well 
they were a bit slow in getting some issues resolved, but they made an 
effort and got it going. Actually although they don't directly support 
LInux, they got folks who know Linux and they dont' get all bent if you 
mention your using it. Ay I can't be to hard on them as their contractor 
who did the install made a mess like leaving cable clipings on the floor 
two feet from the trash can and tracked mud into my house which pistoff the 
wife for sure. They waved all install fees which is more than I really 
expected from them and they didn't even argue and were very interested in 
hearing what I had to say.

Now lets see how they continue to perform.

Oh yes I was able to get things working with dhcp so now to get the base 
stuff installed.

Hello
I have debian woody, do I need gnome 2.4.0 to take advantage of the latest
in screen reading for gnome? I have downloaded a lot of the sources from
the gnome site, but there is a lot of stuff there.. What exactly do I need
to get this up and running with my system. I assume that since 2.4.0 has
just been released that debian does not have it included in the woody
packages.. 
Any first pointers would be helpful.

Urgent help with gnome problem

I believe I might have actually messed something up *I know I know, big
surprise (grin)*

When I started up the computer, after I ran the apt-get program. I
rebooted the computer and I received a few errors, after which my
desktop wouldn't come up anymore. I am afraid I might have screwed
something up big time???

It said that the pannel could not be started, also that notilus was
unable to start due to it's being restarted too many times and
encountering errors, and also it said that some of my settings won't
work like sounds and themes. What can I do to ratify the situation?

Mount the cd image as follows:

mount -o loop FILENAME.ISO MOUNTPOINT

Where FILENAME.ISO is the name of the image file, and MOUNTPOINT is the
name of the directory that you are attaching the iso to. A easy to make
sure that you are using an empty directory for the mount point would be
to make a directory in /mnt called iso. 

mkdir /mnt/iso
