So far as I know no talking kernels exist for gnopix but you may after
sighted assistance in getting it installed be able to install emacspeak or
yasr on it and get it talking. Slackware 9_0 or redhat 9.0 or even debian
would have been more useful more quickly, but if you're willing to hack
you'll want to keep close touch with that instructor and pass back what
you learn in terms of accessibility. You may have been given a further
challenge.

gnopix is a version of Linux and it was being used before 1995 in an
office of a computer repair company that fixed my computer and was in my
apartment complex. It's rather graphical but may be possible to get
things installed and talking anyway.

I think Kathy is talking about Gnopix which is a fairly new Linux
distribution. Unfortunately, it is intended to boot into XWindows with
Gnome so it would probably not be a good choice for a beginner. You would
definitely be better off starting with one of the distributions on the
Speakup site.

There is a preliminary cd image of a speakup enabled knoppix disk in
incoming if folks want to download it and burn it to cd. It needs
large 80 minute or better cdr's to fit on. John Covici has put it
together and there are a few problems but not bad for a first
attempt. I've used it twice now.
There are a few caveats to know before you use it so if you are
serious about burning an image correspond with John and get the
details.

Knoppix (not Knorpix) is a bootable iso image of a Debian distribution on
a CD. It will load a linux kernel into RAM and run a plethora of
applications off the CD, without ever touching your hard drive, unless you
specifically mount and use it (read-only or if you are daring read-write).
I do not know whether speakup is built into Knoppix, or emacspeak, or any
other such tool. But I do know that a Knoppix disk can be customized by
whoever burns the CD to contain just about any software they wish to
include. Knoppix's strong point, besides its ability to decompress
software on the fly and run it off the CD, seems to be its hardware
recognition tools. One of my linux mentors swears by using the Knoppix CD
to write his XF86Config files for the X11 server. Better than any he has
ever hand-hacked, he says.

seems quite interesting. I wanna say it's based on debian but am probably
wrong.
