Hi
I'm thinking about giving redhat 9 a shot. I've been out of the rh world
for quite a while--ever since 7.2, which I didn't care for. Since rh9 lacks
speakup, what's the easiest way to install it? Should I use a kickstart
file or install by telnet? I'm leaning toward kickstart file, as the other
computer on my 2-computer network does not have linux on it and I'm not
sure how well a windows telnet client with a windows screen reader would
work in giving me feedback. It's the family computer and they like that
micro$hit. Just want some opinions here.
next question: Is there a way that, after creating a kickstart file, I can
test it for parse/syntax errors? Is there a program that will do this that
I can get ahold of? I'd rather not find out during installation that I
messed up and blew my hd partitions away, or made some other stupid mistake.
final question: In rh9's kickstart docs it says that speakup and speakup_lt
are keyboard map options you can pick from. But rh9 doesn't have speakup.
Are these keymaps still available even though speakup isn't, because if
they are, I'll set the map that way from the start. If not I'll need the
kbd speakup rpm in addition the the kernel rpm for the Athlon which I can
grab easily enough. At least I assume that's what the kbd rpm on
linux-speakup.org is for. Also, has anyone patched cvs speakup into rh's
kernel source, or do I need a clean source?

I think kickstart may be the answer here. I am not sure of any kickstart test program however. As for the Speakup keymaps, they seem to be available, as I saw them while doing a telnet install on my laptop. And no, I haven't tried to patch CVS speakup into the RH kernel source yet, but I probably will in a couple of days and I'll let you know if it works. If you wish to do a telnet install from a windows box you can use a program called Terraterm pro which works fine with Window Eyes and Jaws. You can also use terraterm to do a serial install between the Windows and the target Linux box. While the kickstart file is a hit and miss once you get Red Hat installed it will create a file called anaconda_kickstart.cfg, and place it in your root home directory. I was going to suggest making a patch file, but with CVS, that just might not be an option since it changes so rapidly. Maybe there's a way for a rh-specific patch to be put into cvs and the install or checkout script could decide which one to apply based on a condition, possibly the condition of a build number after the kernel version (rh and mandrake are the only distros I know of that do this). I mean something such as 2.4.20 and 2.4.20-9. Perhaps if the script could determine the difference, it could know to apply the 2.4.20 redhat patch to 2.4.20-9, for example. Would such a thing be possible? For now, though, can you send me some instructions on how to hand-patch it, what line numbers, what I need to change, etc? Remove the word static and the space after it from the beginning of each line. This is after the checkout program attempts to patch the file. I have no idea what the next line does. That appears to be the one that RH adds. The only difference is that the code from CVS puts in a #ifdef CONFig_SPEAKUP so the device wouldn't be added if SPEAKUP wasn't set.
