Hello & a question

Hello List,
I just joined the list and thought 'd introduce myself.  I'm a programmer
working at a cardiology research center at the University of Utah.  We
mostly use Macs, but I also use JAWS under Windows 98.  Since the
underpinnings of MAC OS X is Linux,  I thought I'd try installing a PC
version and see if I can get a headstart on the learning curve for OS X.

I currently have EMACSSpeak running under Red Hat 8.0 on a  1.4 mHtz machine
with 256 Mb of RAM and 20 Gb devoted to Linux.  I would now like to install
Speakup.  Yes, I now realize this is kind of backwards, but we live and
learn.

Talk external speech synthesizer.  It seems to be the best (and least
expensive!) way for me to go.
Is this a good choice?  Are there any better solutions?  Will this
synthesizer block me from other options (like GNOME)  that are under
development?

Hi
I thought darwin was unix based not Linux based. It would be interesting to
see if speakup will work on that architecture. One thing you can do is
search the net for used synths so you don't go out and spend 350 dollars on
a doubletalk external. If you don't care the internals are going nice and
cheep since they are ISA based.
 Maybe you can mail me privately about the research you do involving
cardiology.. I have an interest..

As you say, the doubletalk is certainly the cheapest option for an
external synth.  Some people love it, and some don't.  I happen to be in
the some that don't, but don't let that stop you if you think it's a good
option.  It is cheap, so for an entry to the systems you'll be playing
with, and the world of speech synthesizers in general, it's not a bad
choice.  If you decide later you don't like it, then you can always buy
something else.
I myself use an Artic Technologies Transport and sqwert to use speakup
since they can be used interchangeably with speakup, and I still have all
my notes if I need them. *grin*
I always say use what's comfortable for you.  At this point you may not
know what that is, but if you check around on a few sites, you may be able
to locate reviews of different speech systems with voice samples you can
download and/or listen to.  Give some of these a try before making a
purchase if you wish, that way you can guarantee you like the speech
output.

BTW, the Mac OS X is BSD-based, not Linux-based. However, many
commands are portable across different un*xes, as most of them are
part of GNU software anyway (www.gnu.org)...so there will be a lot
similar, though I can't speak to how similar configuration systems are
between Redhat and BSD (or even Redhat and OS X). I suspect, though,
not terribly similar, but you'll get a flavor for how a real
multi-user OS runs. ... :) 

You won't, however, be able to use Speakup on OS X. Emacspeak should
work fine, provided you use either some software-based speech like
Festival or Flite with the eflite server, or can make a hardware synth
work with a Mac. I was under the impression that everything was done
USB on Macs these days, so I don't know how easy a Speakup-enabled
Linux would run on a Mac for just that issue. 

As I've spent a lot of time saying I don't know, I'll shut up now.

Let me piggy-back on this one:  anyone aware of an accessible version of 
Linux that runs on Macs?  I have this 6400 that runs on a 604ev (or 
something like that) and it is just sitting in a corner...

soon, since I now have 3 older macs that were given to me, and putting
linux on one should prove interesting.  There was a site (I can't remember
it off the top of my head) that had versions of linux for macs already
created and ready to go, but any version of linux built for the 68000
series of processors should work at least for the older macs.  You might
want to do a search on yahoo or something to see what you can find.

I followed that link, and I found nothing to indicate that there is speech
for the Mac under Linux.
I too have an old Mac, which is too old to allow "OutSpoken" to work, so If
I could put linux on it to make it speak, it would be quite interesting.

Speakup talks to the kernel's serial driver, so the UART is delt with by
the kernel.

Hi.  I checked into hardward differences betweene PC's and Macs.
Basically, You will need an adapter to connect a serial synth to a Mac.
Don't know a source to buy them so you might have to make them.  Macs
will have the same problem that current PC's have: Aple stopped putting
serial ports on Macs around 1999.
In summary, its possible to run speakup on a Mac, but it isn't easy.
Just like with PC's, you will need a Mac which still has a serial port.
Unlike using a PC, you will also need an adapter to connect to the
serial port.

I am not sure about this, but can he use a USB to serial adaptor for this
purpose? He may not have access to speakup as early as a regular serial port
but after the USB services are started it might be possible to use a serial
sinth with it.

Hello there. The only problem with this is that the Usb sybsystem doesn't
load until after Init I believe, so then it would take a while until the
synth drivers load.
