Hi, You don't need a duel kernel, but you may want to have two 
configurations in your grub.conf. One for speakup, and one that loads 
without speakup.
I labeled them normal and speech so everyone knows which configuration is 
witch.
If you are going to be running at run level 5 in 8.0 remove first boot as 
it causes all sorts of accessability nightmares for me.
For some reason at least on my system if first boot is installed it won't 
allow me to switch to a text console.
However, best solution is to go run level 3 and let them run the startx 
command to enter x, or put startx in there profile so it loads for them 
but not you.

Thanks, that's what I needed.  I boot in level three and the
rest of the family runs startx to get to their GUI.
I am a bit disappointed that they'll have to reboot to run
the GUI, but guess we'll live with it.

What gave you that idea?  You shouldn't have to reboot at all.  My
experiences are that if somebody runs startx while Speakup is running, it
shuts up as soon as X comes up.  So, just try it and see what happens.

Wow!  A sensible post on this subject.  It's amazing the bogus crap one 
can read on mailing lists.  I would have thought that Thomas had 
played around with X enough to know better. --

Red hat Speakup

Hi All,

I'm running into a problem installing the RH 8.0 with
speakup.
I started the install at the prompt with
text speakup_synth=ltlk

I have the lite Talk external synth so this is the keyword I
needed to use.
I get speach all through the boot process, but once that
finishes talking, I get nothing else.

I had my wife check the screen and it shows a blue
background about two thirds of the way down the screen with
black below it.  I have noting else on the scren.

At this point it appears to lockup and I can go nowwhere
except to shut off the computer and try again with the same
results.

I read the howto and the instructions to use from section 4
down for a new install, but no help with this problem.

Any help appreciated

I was one of at least three people who thought you were telling Ron to 
maintain two boot configurations, one for the console, and one for X.  
Based on what I understood you to be saying, I reacted.  I'm sorry that my

to.  Yes, I use allot of x-windows, and nowhere did I ever state that the 
system need to be restarted to start x-windows.
All I stated to Ron was that he may like to have to options one for a 
normal 
startup and one for speakup. That is helpful when a synth is not hooked 
up, or someones wants to start the computer without speakup loading.

Hi, Ron. I think you totally miss understood my previous post.
You don't need to restart your system to run x-windows. The only purpose I 
have a speech and a normal startup is for times when my Dectalk is not 
connected or someone wants to start mysystem withouthearing speech. I 
supose I should have made it more clear why I suggested a speech and 
normal startup.
However, if the system is already running its ok to login and and startx. 
As soon as the x-server starts speakup will sease speaking anyway.

Hi.  I use speakup on all my systems.  My sighted girl friend also uses
the computers with Gnome.  You shouldn't have any problems with speakup
on any of your computers.  To make it easier for my girl friend, I have
my system start X-windows during boot.  This way she sees a GUI login
prompt and all I have to do is use ctl-alt-f1 to switch to a text
console with speakup.

Red Hat Speakup

[Ron Marriage]

I would like to update my main computer running Red Hat 7.3
to the 8.0 version that includes the speakup setup and
configuration during installation.

I am currently running emacspeak on this system as I share
it with other family and they use KDE.

I run speakup on an older dedicated speach machine, also
running 7.3.

What I need to know is if I install speakup on the family
machine, is there a problem when the others run KDE? Must I
have duel boot kernels?
