One of the more useful features of the DOS screen reader, asap, was it's
ability to silence a line, but continue speaking beginning at the next
line. This feature was bound to the shift key, and I got very good at
tapping shift to help me skim through such text.
In the case of pine, I suspect that the most which could be accomplished
today is to get rid of the text that always appears, and the text that
almost always appears. In the former category are the second and third
lines--the two that say something like "you're using XX charset, and some
chars may not be presented correctly." It actually does take a few seconds
to say that text--so there's a few gained. Next, the actual char set is
most often Windows 1252, so a rule to eliminate that would catch most of
the annoyances.

Or, like JFW, you can add a feature to speakup that let's you hit a shift
key and scip ahead in the text.

Have I kicked the habbit yet? Lol!
In truth I did kill Windows this week. It died during an important
project, wouldn't reboot, so I simply blew it away, and put Linux on full
time.
Anyway, does anyone know how to change the default char set for Pine? Like
some sort of mail rule?

To change the default character set in pine, do the following. Go to the
main menu with m, then hit s, and then c. Do a control-w and search for
the words character-set. Hit enter to change the value. You'll probably
want to change it to
iso-8859-1, since that seems to be the most common one.

Hi Thomas -
You look clean as a whistle to me!
>From the pine main menu type 's' for setup, then 'c' for
configuration, then 'w' and search for 'character-set'. After you
make the entry you want (it has to be letter perfect to be
recognized) type 'e' to exit and save changes and you are done.
