trplayer and audio permissions

I am having no difficulty with my audio output arrangement here, and have
done nothing to create or modify any groups for my sound devices.

On my system, /dev/dsp and /dev/audio are symbolic links with 777
permissions; they are linked to /dev/dsp1 and /dev/audio1 which have 666
permissions.

Maybe those are not i;mportant details, but then again perhaps they are.

Out of the box (slackware 8.0) audio, audio1, dsp and dsp1 appear to be
separate devices and default permissions had no privs for global others
and they are in the sys group along with some other audio sounding devices
like mixer and mixer1 and some midi devices. With this default
arrangement, no audio programs would work from normal user. At least then
I wqould get a message to the fact from programs like play and mpg123.
Realplayer, however doesn't give any messages - just plays silently. I now
have set rw for other for audio, audio1, dsp, and dsp1 but still silence
from realplayer in a normal user. Root plays fine. About the only option I
can see might be to add normal users to the sys group and give that a try.
I don't know what devices realplayer / trplayer is trying to access or why
normal users get the silent treatment.

My system is also Slackware 8.0, but I have installed the latest alsa
drivers and have run the script 'snddevices' from that package I am not
sure what devices RealPlayer8 is trying to use either. We need someone
who knows what they are doing to educate us!!!

That's one big difference, I suppose; I do not have the alsa drivers
installed. I figured I'd keep it as simple as possible til I really get
things going here. Then I may install them as I understand they are
required to run speak freely.

One thing for sure, I can at least use the sound devices. It has got to be
permission related for non root users.

I use Suse version 7.1 and I have the same problem as Steve.  Logged in as
root I have sound everywhere.  Otherwise it's as Steve indicates with his
problem.  I'm using the Sound Blaster Live card.  Sounds great!  I'll be
following this string closely and perhaps there will be two happy campers
when all is said and done.

Hi Rodney -

I am also using the sblive card. Before recently upgrading to Slackware
8.0 and upgrading my alsa drivers, I also used Slackware 7.1 with an older
set of alsa drivers, and my system worked fine in that configuration too,
without messing with groups or permissions, other than whatever the alsa
installation script did on my behalf.

It is a great card, to be sure. I wish it had a simpler set of features to
set, but I suppose some day I will be grateful for the complexity.

The simplest solution to the permissions problem, is just to add yourself
into the appropriate group.  Do that, by just editing the /etc/group file,
and adding your username at the end of the line for that group; that is the
most secure way, and the method that will cause you least problems.  If you
were, for example to change permissions for these devices to something
else, then in the future, apply some upgrade, the permissions might get set
back to defaults, and you'd be disabled from using the audio devices again.
I have used the add-to-group method for years, and have had no problems.

Hi Steve

Having a look at a few different systems I see that trplayer is not linked
to the realplayer libs dynamically.  So it must be looking for these at
runtime.  This I do believe is your problem.  Check the permissions on
rpnp.so.  This should make things work for you.

Well, looking at the permissions in the RealPlayer8 directory revealed a
couple interesting items. I notice that there are no write permissions
offered to any user level and when I copied them in, they still had my
personal user ownership. Doubt that had much to do with it but I changed
the owner:group to root:root just like the rest of the stuff in
/usr/lib:). At this point, don't know if I should give write permission to
the owner part; can't hurt I suppose.

Now I would think a permission problem with libraries would have also
shown itself while root was running the program as well since the program
ran in silence. I should also add that during the silence treatment,
pressing the s key in trplayer showed that the track was indeed playing
and time was accumulating like normal. Thus I would think the libraries
were being found ok.

suppose Steve has to run ldconfig?

I wonder, don't you mean static rather than dynamic?  Since trplayer comes
along later, it would have to call realplayer lib functions at run time.
So that brings up the notion of having to resolve these things
"dynamically" or at run time. I don't fully understand ldconfig but wonder
what effect that might be done. Again, this works fine for root so can't
imagine ldconfig having anything to do with it.

If it was statically built you wouldn't need the libs at all.  The output
of ldd on trplayer shows that it is not linked to the realplayer lib.

Yes it must be runtime.  I don't understand this.  But what I see says
that this is the case.

That is another good reason why ldconfig doesn't have anything to do with
it.

I have no problems with my users added to the "sys" group.  Then again, I 
am using an AWE64, not a SB Live.  I would suggest trying putting a user in 
the "sys" group, and other than that, I don't know.  I have noticed that 
the sound support on some cards in Linux is dodgy.  For example, the Intel 
I810 chip that comes on a lot of newer computers as an on-board sound card 
is absolutely terrible!  I suppose that's why Alsa was invented.  It's a 
shame the kernel team couldn't get with the Alsa team and give the stock 
kernel some really good sound support.

Been there, done that! And I am happy to say, "It works!" Adam, that did
the trick. Trplayer and RealPlayer must need other devices in addition to
audio and dsp. Sorry to take so long on getting back to you all. Thanks
