Hello,

this message is mainly for chris or for those who have experience installing Arch. When will the next talking arch be released? You've released in July, but I don't see it booting with EFI support.
When I do
modprobe efivars
and look for efivars in
/sys/firmware
I do not see it loaded.
so I'm thinking the release you made in July doesn't support efi. I could be wrong though.
Also how does one run the new installation?

Alonzo

No,
My new laptop has the option to boot with UEFI. It looks like it makes everything easier as far as booting is concerned. You can boot with out a boot loader using efistub if i understand correctly. I've not installed arch in ages since I had it on my older laptop. It looks like the installation has changed a bit. It just says root log in and it auto logs the user as root. I'm not sure how to launch the installation procedure since you no longer do /arch/setup.

The newest Arch installers don't have /arch/setup. They use install
scripts to install the base system. Have a look at
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installation_Guide
and
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide
as well as the Arch Linux for the Blind setup instructions at
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Linux_for_the_blind
to become familiar with how the new install system and Talking Arch
works and to get you on your way to a successful Arch installation. I
haven't worked with EFI, but there should be some instructions linked in
the wiki articles to help you use it effectively. Hope this helps.

According to mattias:
# so /arch/setup are replaced by packstrap correct?

Mostly correct. /arch/setup is replaced by arch-install-scripts, which
include pacstrap, genfstab and arch-chroot. More info about how to use
the Arch install scripts to bootstrap an Arch system, either from the
install media or from an existing system is available from the
installation guide at
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installation_guide

Howdy,

OK, I'm diving back in and thought I'd play with Archlinux. Did Slackware years and years ago, am familiar with Debian (but doesn't have software speakup on the install CD, I don't think), and, yeah. I needed another challenge.

So I have this Samsung netbook. Just for simplicity, I set up sda2 as Linux file system and sda3 as swap. sda1 is the Samsung recovery partition, which has Windows XP image on it, and I figured I'd better keep that for just in case. So never mind it.

So I put the talking arch on a 4gb USB drive. It boots. It's fantastic. I followed the directions, all a piece of cake, more or less. I got a system installed. I stuck a line in stab for the swap partition because there didn't seem to be such a line in it. I created an rc.conf because there wasn't one, and just had the line for
MODULES=(speakup speakup_soft)
DAEMONS=(alsa espeakup)

Rebooting, the system appears to bootto a login: prompt, but no speech.

I'm fairly sure I didn't miss a step. Iwent through it twice. Yes, I saved the alas state. Yes, I did the syslinux boot thing. There is an rc.d but there was no rc.conf or rc.local or any other rc.* files. Possibly no network connectivity, but no way to be certain.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

First of all, you will need to create
/etc/modules-load.d/speakup.conf
containing the following lines:

speakup
speakup_soft

Once you have done this, or if you did it already, you need the attached
file. I think it's not yet in the latest version of espeakup. Save the
attached file as
/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/espeakup.service
on your Arch installation. Then do

sudo systemctl start espeakup
sudo systemctl enable espeakup.service

Speakup will start talking as soon as you enter the first command, and
will begin speaking automatically at boot time on the next reboot after
typing the second command. I hope the new systemd unit makes it into the
released version soon.

Note: a file similar to my attachment is now in the version of espeakup
in community-testing, so enabling that repo for now to pull in the
latest espeakup will also give you a talking system, although you will
still need to be sure the service is enabled.

sudo systemctl enable espeakup.service

Hope this helps.
~Kyle
