Debian Buster installer and speech issues

Hello,

I have heard that some people have issues with getting their sound
card working in the Buster Debian installer.  After trying more, I
have noticed that some sound drivers take a huge time (12s!) to get to
initialize.  I have thus extended the waiting to fix this.

Could people who were having issues please try the following image which
includes the fix, so I can be sure that it works correctly and I can
include that in time for Buster?

Okay, I tried this two different ways and had failures in all cases.
First thing to understand was that mini.iso allowed me to use my usb
speakers to install in all cases.
Cases were package selections of 1 2 6 10 12 and the second case only
had 12 for package selections.  On completion the usb speakers clicked
but no speech or sound ever came out of them for both cases.  I logged
in on both cases and ran speaker-test and had a headset attached to the
speaker and mic jacks and only heard static through the headset.
both speakup and orca failed to start in each case.

Hello,

I started the installer in qemu VM with 3 sound cards.

No issue with the installer, chose 1 6 10 12,
started the installed system, logged-in in lightdm
with speech, orca running in Mate, espeakup was running
with the expected voice fr-fr.
I couldn't manage to switch to a tty though although
I told quemu to grab the keys with Ctrl+Alt+G,
this switched to a tty of the host so I don't know
if espeakup would speak in that situation.

On bare metal, no luck: the installer could not detect
my sound card, so no  speech in the installer.

It made 9 unsuccessful attempts, told it would tried
other cards, seemed to gave up.

I have only one sound card.

That's weird as I have no issue with Slint's installer,
also using espeakup.

I attach my alsa info, stripped from useless overweight.

I'm on bare metal only and have two sound cards both of which were
detected, I ought to have included that in my earlier failure message.

You mean that at reboot you didn't have sound?
What does /etc/default/espeakup contain?
Also, just like for the case of speak inside the installer I need
the debugging information mentioned on

otherwise I can only try to do divination, which I'll most probably just
fail at like in the past years.

Failed to start, or failed to speak? Do the processus really not exist
at all?

ctrl-alt-f1-6 are taken by the kernel, Xorg can't do much about it. The
only way to synthesize them in qemu is to switch to the qemu console
with control-alt-2 and type "sendkey ctrl-alt-f2" there.

What do you mean by "told it would tried other cards"? What _exactly_
did it write? Otherwise I'm not sure what exactly you refer to, that's
how a way for me to be able to debug anything.

Yes, because as commented there it seems that the Buster audio drivers
take _ages_ to initialize...

from *within the installer* because that is what the script uses. The
alsa-info output from an installed system can be useful, but much less
than the precise information of what is _actually_ happening.

Yes, I haven't had time to make Orca/speech-dispatcher release audio
when switching off from Xorg.

Yes, I know, in Slint you got something working directly at the alsa
level, but that's to be discussed with people maintaining alsa in
Debian, I don't have commit access to these.

An idea, for anyone trying an install with mini.iso.  While in the
installer execute a shell near the beginning of install and examine the
contents of /etc/asound.conf then repeat the execute a shell near the
end of the install and repeat the examination of /etc/asound.conf.  I'll
need to run mini.iso again and do both examinations but when running the
examination once I noticed a couple lines with something like slave card
=0 on them.  I would have expected slave card=2 since card 2 is where I
have my speakers and card 0 is where I have my headset.  It will be
interesting to see if that changes on second examination here.

My assumption is that' there is an issue with S38espeakup.

I thought, maybe there's an issue with this modification.

However, I have no issue with only one sound card in qemu
(option -soundhw hda): I get a speaking dialog to choose
the language, as expected. So, no clue, sorry.

Thanks for the clue.

After switching espeakup is still running according to ps,
however I have no speech in tty2. When switching back to tty7
orca still works though.

In another mail exchange you told me that you speakers are connected
though USB.

maybe this can come into play?

The only working speakers here now are the usb speakers.  The logitech
speakers I was using rattled when I picked one of them up so those had
to be trashed since they take wall current to run and had those not been
trashed the Fire Department would have had to pay a visit.  That was a
recent development between emails.

The running system version is not useful, however, since it's the levels
as d-i gets them that we want. Could you report at least the levels for
Master/Headphone/Speaker/PCM? Something like:
