Ok, so it did find a card (after 9sec initialization...)

Without audible speech, I guess?
Is espeakup running?

Ok, so nothing too fancy.

The running system version is not useful, however, since it's the levels
as d-i gets them that we want. Could you report at least the levels for
Master/Headphone/Speaker/PCM? Something like:
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
Mono: Playback 57 [66%] [-22.50dB] [on]
Simple mixer control 'Headphone',0
Front Left: Playback 87 [100%] [0.00dB] [on]
Front Right: Playback 87 [100%] [0.00dB] [on]
Simple mixer control 'Speaker',0
Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [-65.25dB] [off]
Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [-65.25dB] [off]
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
Front Left: Playback 255 [100%] [0.00dB]
Front Right: Playback 255 [100%] [0.00dB]
Here you see that my Speaker level is off (which is expected on my
installed system).

That shouldn't harm.

Ok, could you also post
cat /var/run/espeakup.card
?
