CORRECTION..
The libportaudio library was not from the Mandrake repository.. Duh..
That "mdk" is probably the initials of the compiler to a Slack tgz file.
Sorry if this caused any confusion.. :^(..

For what it's worth: Slackware 13.0 can be installed with a
speakup.s kernel, that worked for me but I didn't document what I did.
:^(...
However; I tried again with a fresh install of the huge.s
kernel that I couldn't get working so I tried again with the
huge-smp-2.6.29.6-smp kernel, and was able to test invoking espeak or
speak and typing text /or/ importing a text file and that worked..
My notes say I had to do this: (I used the JFS file system for
the test.) Installed/compiled the following:
libportaudio0-18.1-4mdk.i586.tgz from the Mandrake repository.
Required by PortAudio..
pa_stable_v19_20071207.tar.gz
speakup-3.1.5.tar.bz2

Slackware still doesn't support software speech at install time, but it
uses 2.6.33.4, which seems to have no problems with serial support, at
least with my Dectalk USB in serial mode.

My last experience with Slackware is you had to use a hardware synth.
Yes, Speakup comes with Slackware; just use the speakup.s image if
memory serves me right. I may be attempting a new Slackware install
on my old laptop here as no other distro will work on it; most distros
require newer processors than this laptop and Slackware was the only
one I could get to work on it. I just hope the latest Slackware uses
a kernel that still allows speakup to use serial ports. I think it is
kernels of 2.6.34 and later that speakup's serial support falls
appart.

Though I'm currently not interested in GNOME.

I agree fully. Apparently, I'm not alone in this, either. There is a
version of Gnome for Slackware Linux called GSB. The previous two
versions included Pulseaudio. I always had to find some way to disable it
in order to use both Espeak and have sounds. The current version ditched
Pulseaudio completely, and includes Espeak as one of its packages. I
wouldn't even have messed with Gnome in Slackware 13.1 if they hadn't
decided to do this. I hope others will soon follow this trend. If
everybody drops Pulseaudio, either the developer will get the message, or
it will be abandoned.

Hi. That will only work if you don't do anything that starts pulseaudio. The default for pulseaudio
opens the sound card and no other apps can use it at that point.
In my opinion, pulseaudio is a badly behaved app with a developer who refuses to listen to the needs of blind users who use software speech.
It should be avoided as much as possible.
Ubuntu's decision to force pulseaudio on it's users is why I no longer run Ubuntu.

I can't really give any help for the pulse audio on system wide use
but one thing you might try is using espeakup with alsa directly
bypassing pulse audio. To do that you give --with-alsa on the
./configure command line when configuring the package. Sometimes a
tweak is necessary in alsa.c for smooth output buffering but that can
be managed if it works better than the default set-up.

Hi,
I am not sure how to do it. There's pobably a tutorial lying around
somewhere, but the easy solution would be to add the Vinux repository
and run the build-vinux script. You can choose to not add all the extra
key bindings if you don't want them.

Hi,
I also used to have this issue and similarly didn't find a good
solution. In my case though, Speakup worked pretty well but all the rest
that's to do with sound were muted. I mean to say that even I didn't
hear the loging in sound or any songs / media files with sounds. But I
just reinstalled Ubuntu and I'm still relying on Orca.

Thing can be done, It will be very much appreciated.
I also think that the issue lies there with
pulseaudio.

Hi,
I think for it to work correctly you'd have to set pulseaudio to run as
a system wide service. You could also try launching speakup and espeakup
or speechd-up after the desktop has loaded.
Probably the easiest way is to install Vinux which has all this stuff
working already but is Ubuntu 10.04 under the hood.

Hi,
I've just tried to get the latest stable Speakup 3.1.5 running on a
Ubuntu 10.04.1 VM.
Speakup compiled and the modules loaded cleanly. Espeakup compiled
but on launch it throws bt-audio-service-open connection refused
errors and I don't have console speech.
I remember having this exact problem years ago on maybe Ubuntu 8.10 or
so and I never solved it -- ended up moving to Debian. But I've now
got a real need to have a fully accessible Ubuntu desktop.
Has anyone else encountered and hopefully solved this problem?
Alternatively, any advice for getting Speakup running on my Ubuntu
desktop welcomed. I've got Orca running via Espeak and
Speech-dispatcher but I recall past issues trying to get both Orca and
Speakup running via speech-dispatcher on the one box.
Advice much welcomed!
Thanks,
Garry
