I have downloaded the net installer beta 2 for lenny.

However, I cannot get speakup to come up talking.

I have done the following

booted from cd
when cd spins down hit tab and down arrow
then entered speakup.synth=apollo

Got my daughter to look at what was happening and there was an error
saying unrecognised boot parameter.

So, do I have the wrong iso or am I missing something?

Many thanks

Keith

You need the converse: down arrow first (to select the graphical
installation) then tab.

Thanks for this but still no luck.

Got daughter to confirm that graphical is selected but still get an
"unknown boot option" message.

Well, actually that message is normal: the kernel just says that it
didn't use it.

Oh, wait a minute: didn't you say that you use the beta2? I can't
remember when that was release but I bet speakup wasn't included at the
time. Release Candidate 1 should have it, however.

Is there maybe an abbreviation for the synth name instead of writing it
out?

It does. I just used it today and it works fine.

No, it's indeed just e.g. speakup.synth=apollo

Yes, my CD images I downloaded yesterday worked on my good box. I
can't get it to work on my laptop however. I can't tell if the initrd
is at fault or if there just isn't enough memory in my lap to run
this. It only has 32 MB <sigh> but I can run Slackware on it. Maybe
I just had better stick to slackware on my laptop. Slackware has
always prided itself in being able to run on lower grade machines. I
like Debian on my big machine so wanted to move it onto my other
machines but it falls over on my laptop. I dunno if there is anything
I can do to make this happen or not. Actually, would it be possible
to get speakup into the text installer instead? maybe the text
installer would have a better chance to run on my low grade laptop.

Is this a standard Debian disc, or do I have to get it somewhere else?
I find myself in need of a fresh Linux install....

Buddy,

It's the soon-to-be-released Lenny Debian (still known as testing) and
the installer is the RC1 Lenny installer on the Debian web page.

Thanks, Samuel,

Got it now, downloaded a later iso and it worked fine.

Nice to have an option to install a standard system and not all the
gnome stuff.

Not yet. the closest thing to that would be my Slackware 12.1
installation disk; that's not the same as a live CD but that has been
close enough for me so far. I would like to grab an image of sysresc
if Speakup is back in it.

Yes, speakup is back in sysresccd as of 1.1.0. There is also a speakup
info page on the sysresccd wiki:
http://www.sysresccd.org/speakup-info
If you're using a dectalk express as your synth, you'll want to use
sysresccd 1.1.2beta4, since it looks like we've gotten the dectalk bug
squashed that was in sysresccd 1.1.0, and 1.1.1, thanks to Luke's
testing, and reporting back. Also, there is a problem booting
sysresccd 1.1.1 on some hardware configs, that has been fixed in
1.1.2beta4 also. So, unless the word beta makes you turn, run, and
stay far away, you're better off using the latest beta of 1.1.2, as
opposed to the latest stable 1.1.1. Hth.

Yes, but will it run under 32 MB of RAM? I know I had troubles with 256
MB, so I'm not sure how 32 MB would work. I'm sure it would be
difficult with software speech. For that matter, I'm not sure that
sysresccd would work either.

32 megs is a challenge for sure. Surprisingly enough, I've been able
to do quite a bit with it so far. I've had Slackware up to Version
12.0 running with software speech, espeak, wireless LAN and all and
all for a machine with so little RAM and a 266 MHz processor, I'm
pleasantly surprised at the performance. I got the thing for free
from a nephew of mine a year or two ago and as long as I don't try to
compile big programs like the kernel or mplayer, all is pretty good.
I obviously would not consider running any X stuff at all but for a
console device, there's still some life in it. I was just sadly
disappointed I couldn't get Deb started on it but maybe that's the
limit. I can keep going with Slackware on it though for now.

As far as sysresccd goes, I guess I'll just havt to give it a try.
I've always wanted to but hadn't gotten around to it yet.

I am about 90% sure that I have run SysResCD on a 32 MB RAM system. I had
a bunch of old PCs here a few months ago (which means that they are still
here, sitting there, looking at me, wondering why I haven't cannibalized
them yet), and one of them was most definitely 32 MB RAM. I tested it
with SysRescCD, and then fixed up its copy of Win 98. I'm almost sure
that was one of those I ran SysResCD on.
