E-mail in GUI

E-mail in GUI

[Chris Norman]

Hi people,
I'm running Ubuntu on my laptop, but I have one problem.

How do I setup a GUI mail reader that is accessible? ThunderBird isn't, and 
I cna't figure out evolution. I was using Mutt and postfix, but postfix 
doesn't seem to be sending out e-mails for me.

Hello,
When you alter a few settings in evolution, it isn't too bad to use.

The settings I am thinking of are things like:
Turn of the preview pane, in view menu under preview.
Remove a few toolbars, those you don't need as you will be able to tab to 
them all, so the tab cycle is longer the more you have.
Press f7 to turn on cursor navigation, now you can read emails with the 
cursors and the screen review keys.
Other interface tweaks to get just what you want spoken, only you can choose 
these.

I don't think I have missed anything important for getting started with 
evolution.

The only thing I am struggling with evolution is how to seperate each 
message in these speakup digest messages (just to open attachments, not save 
them) so I can reply to the specific message than the digest. From what I 
have found on the internet, there should be an arrow next to the bit that 
says the attachment message begins, and to click that, well orca doesn't 
find that.

I would like to use Evolution.  It looks really nice from what I can
tell.  The only problem is that I can't get it to accept my maildir
mailbox.  There is a server type option for maildir, but no place to
enter the path to the mailbox.  There is a path button that brings up a
file chooser, but it will only choose files.  I can't seem to force it
to choose a directory and I can't enter the path manually, either in the
Evolution setup or in the preferences window.

I either need a way to enter my maildir path into Evolution or I guess I
will need to find an app that will convert maildir to mbox.

Yuck, but if there's no other way, I guess that's better then
nothing. Actually, such an app already exists, and is simply called
maildir2mbox. I have qmail, and most components of the courier server,
except for the smtp component installed on my system, and man
maildir2mbox brings up the maildir2mbox(1) manual page for it. I'm not
sure which piece of software maildir2mbox came with, but I  think it's
qmail, though I suppose it could have been in one of the courier
packages as well.

Thanks.  Actually I just found out mutt can do it.  I just tag all
messages and copy them to the mbox file of my choosing.  It actually
works quite nicely.  And I don't lose any messages either, it's already
been tested.  Basically it's just like backing up, since everything is
added to the mbox but stays where it is in the maildir as well.

Hi.

You forgot the most important one: insert f1 to turn on learn mode.
Orca's learn mode is like speakup's.  When on, pressing any key on the
keyboard except escape will cause Orca to tell you it's function.  Most Orca
keys are on the keypad in the desktop key map.  I haven't tried the
laptop key map, so I don't know what keys they use there.

Also to add that there is the keys for clicking at the review point, the two 
centre keys on the numpad (just above 8 and 9 on the standard keypad, and do 
left and right clicks). There is also a laptop keymap in the CVS version.
