Hi folks. Ok. I've got the grml iso, burnt it to disk, and then what? I can't find any guide as to it's direct usage from the prepared CD, or installation to hard disk. Yes I did find a sketchy discription of the install to Hard disk process on the site, but A new bee like me would be still lost after reading it. For example, Having booted up grml from the cd, Must I type anything to make speakup interact with my hardware dectalk synth? Please help. Cheers!

If you use the grml live-cd just enter speakup's kernel cheatcodes
at the bootprompt:

grml speakup_synth=dectlk

This should activate the speakup kernel module for the dectalk synth.

BTW: If you do not have a hardware synthesizer you can try booting
with the new swspeak option:

grml swspeak

This prepares the system for use with software synthesizer through
speakup. Just run 'speechd-up' after booting up to activate sound
output then.

A list of all available cheatcodes is available online as well:
http://grml.org/files/release-0.6/grml-cheatcodes.txt

I described it in another mail to the speakup mailinglist a few
hours ago. In short: take a look at the manpage of grml2hd
(available online as well: http://grml.org/grml2hd/grml2hd.html) -
notice the '-mbr' option.

Hint: if you want to run speakup also on hd installation you have to
adjust the append-line(s) in /etc/lilo.conf so the bootoptions are
available to the kernel as well.

But you can install a plain Debian system through grml as well using
debootstrap. Take a look at 'grml-tips debootstrap' on the grml
live-cd to get an idea about debootstrap.

Greetings,

I have a very basic dectalk USB question, I am not sure if i am going to
get this, but I am having trouble finding a dectalk express, and
understand the USB unit can be used with a 9-pin port?
I have no USB port, so must be firm on this before seeking one.
I might add that I am not using windows either so again want to be sure it
is still just a text to speech device controlled by one's respective
program.
Thanks,
Karen

Hi you can use the dectalk express using the serial port with no problem
it should work as an express using what ever screen reader you use.

The DECTalk USB has both a 9-pin serial, and USB port. It can be run via 9-volt battery, from an adapter, or, even when you're running it serialy, you can
use the USB port for power. There is a switch on the unit for USB or Serial use. Mine is languishing somewhere, and it I find it I'll tell you the switch details.
