Hi all
I have recently obtained a DECtalk PC2 card, and have successfully set
it up and used it under Windows 98 with JAWS. I am now attempting to
make it work with Speakup under Linux.
I copied the dec_pc to the suggested location, and ran dtload -v. I get
the following output:
testkernel got dec
Loading kernel of 26438 bytes ( 77 relocs )
cs:ip == 0040:0010 ss:sp == 07eb:0200
status -3
However, upon loading speakup, I am informed that the device, while
found, appeared to have no firmware loaded.
I try running dtload again, and get the following output:

cs:ip == 0040:0010 ss:sp == 07eb:0200
card is ready
dt_loadmem: addr = 00000400 size = 26438
waitmode p=c001 s = 1000
status -9
When I attempt to load speakup and the decpc module a second time, the
system completely locks up hard, and I have to press the reset button.
I have tried the firmware that came in the speakup tarball, and the
firmware off my install disk, which is 4.2C. Suggestions are welcome.

I tried using the Dectalk PC 2 long ago with the Speakup driver, and had
similar problems. I found that what I often had to do is load it from
DOS, then do a soft reboot with control-alt-delete. I also had problems
where the Linux clock would lose time severely whenever the Dectalk PC 2
was active. I eventually gave up and went back to the Accent PC I had
gotten when the manufacturer was dumping his remaining stock. Once I got
a new PC, I switched to the Dectalk USB in RS232 mode, and haven't looked
back. The bottom line is that the Speakup driver may well work with the
original Dectalk PC, but seems not to work well with the later PC 2. I
don't have the slightest idea of what the cause is.

Hi, this does not sound like a speakup driver issue this sounds like a
dt loader issue. Remember the only thing that changed between pc 1 and
pc 2 was the firmware and the chip on the card. The communication did
not change at all nither did the in line commands. It sounds like the
issue is with loading the dt firmware on the card.

Well, I also went to a U S B Dec-Talk, but from a pc1. I must say that back
then, I had much better results running Jupiter, but it is not exactly a
screen-reader in the traditional sense. Now, other than the pitch-and-rate
getting knocked down quite often, speakup is quite responsive.

Were you using jupiter with the DECtalk PC driver written back in the
late 90s? I have found that, but haven't found a version for the 2.6
kernel, so I am assuming that it is discontinued/dead. I think others
used it for using the DEC pc with emacspeak.
The loader for speakup was adapted from that package, and I am wondering
whether I would have any more luck with loading firmware if I was using
that driver, assuming I had a 2.6 version.

Well, Luke, honestly, I would write Karl, who would know the specifics. Since
I lost a hard-drive last year, Jupiter went with it, so sorry I cannot look.
Most important reason I wanted to try Jupiter was that it has dictionary
support.

Hi try a copy of the ferm ware dectalk 4.2b it does not need this file.
And you might get further.
The usa.exe is the core langwige file for the dectalk and was introduced
in 4.2c

Just tried the firmware shipped with speakup from a cold boot, and it
doesn't get nearly as far. It only attempts to load the kernel, then
exists printing a status -3 message, (I think -3 is correct.) So it is
not always working.
