To: Speakup is a screen review system for Linux.
Folks,someone has asked if I could take their winblows drive and move
the entire contents over to a new drive. The old drive is not in the
best of health. Is there a utility that would move the entire
contents including boot info so fdisk would not have to be used to
restore the boot record? The drives are of different sizes.

I did this once with GNU Parted. As I recall, both drives have to have
the same cluster size, and I think it only works with FAT/FAT32, not NTFS.
There are probably some commercial products capable of this as well. In
a real pinch, you could probably use dd to do it, but the new drive would
be a mirror image of the old. Thus, it would have the same amount of free
space as the old drive.

Thanks, that is why I didn't want to use dd, they don't want to give
up the space, but it could probably be partitioned
and used. Well ay worse comes to worse, can do a fresh install
which wouldn't be a bad thing either. Better yet, should just put
Linux on there and their life would be soooo much easier...grin

Because DD assumes that both drives are the same size. You wouldn't
want to dd 3Gb of contents on to a 20Gb drive. I don't know of an
effective way to get around this.

ghost will do what you want to do, and then you can either create a second
partition or increase the initial partition when all is done.

Yes, partition image <http://www.partimage.org/> is the free software
alternative to ghost.
I've actually had to move a ntfs file system from one drive to another
once. What I did is backup the old partition with partimage,
partitioned the new drive with cfdisk to have the first partition take
up all the space, restored the backup I made with partimage on to the
new drive, and resized the file system to fully fit the new partition
using a ntfs resize program that comes with the ntfsprogs
package. Hth.

OK,
Create a 3gb partition on the new drive.
Format it.
Copy all files from the one drive to the other, using cp -a
Now for the fun part.
DD the first master record of the old drive on to the new drive.
Note, do all the copying of files through linux because Windows has
hidden files that LINUX sees.
This should work.
Also do a google on "stupid dd tricks"
It was an excellent article on how the author used dd to do what you are
trying to do, if I am reading your thread correctly.
The author didn't want to use ghost because of the licensing issues and
yet he had to create a number of computers with an imaging process.
If you can't find the article, I may have it around here somewhere.

Thanks for the info all you good folks. Steve that does sound like
one hell of a trick, will have to look at taht as well as
partitionimage. I thik I have that around here, but surely have dd on
the box..grin. Well ay the machine will be for my son as I got my
wife and myself Macs so there ya go.
