Hello.
Has any one ever got the bks-unpack program for linux to work?
I have tryed it and every time i try to unpack a book it says
'Segmentation fault' does any one know why it does this i have
tryed it with alot of diffrent books from bookshare.org and get
the same message.
If any one could help me i would be most greatful.

Hi.

What does book share tech support say about your problem?  If I
understand that program, you are paying them, so they should be the
first place to ask for help.
Personally, if I pay for a product, then I expect the people I pay to
support it.

Hi, James:

I've used the BookShare unpack tool since it was in beta without
problems, both on Fedora and on Debian systems beginning with a 2.4.X
kernel, and now with 2.6.12 kernels. I don't ever recall seg faulting.
Can you say more about your setup?

Is the program binary-only? Because if so, it could be an issue of it being linked with an older version of glibc or something else (think ViaVoice). I'm actually just waiting to find the time to activate my bookshare account, although I'll be mostly downloading brf formatted books so I don't think it'll be a problem for me. However, I will report my success (or lack thereof) with a daisy book when I get things working.

Yes, it is binary only and I agree that glibc, or something like, is the
most likely culpirt.

Most important point, imho, is that I believe we can get this resolved.
I will work on it as a member of BookShare's Advisory Committee. But, it
will likely take some days to get it resolved, so don't expect complete
answers by this afternoon! <grin>

Janina, got sidetracked this morn' and haven't had a chance to run the
program.  I tried unpacking something last night, and got an error
said something about needing library xxx or whatever.  You're probably
right that it is library related and needs updating.  If you can light
a fire under them, good!  You might also ask them to please pay
attention when people write asking questions.  Allowing somebody to
sit for six months, whether or not that person persisted in his
efforts to contact Benetech is immaterial.  It's faulty business
practice to ignore or refuse to attend to, questions that come from
patrons.  Doesn't matter if you can't fulfill the need, if you can
fulfill the need.  It's the human contact that matters.  This poor guy
should never, ever have been allowed to stagnate for six months!
People pay good money for Bookshare.  <smile>  I just renewed my
subscription this morning.  

<smile>  I must say, though that Bookshare has been known to hang fire
sometimes, even at its beginning.  I remember one gal who wrote in,
thoroughly insensed because she hadn't had her proof of blindness
confirmed.  

"I don't know what's wrong with you people," she wrote.  "I think your
whole organization is on auto-Pilate!"

I've been laughing about that post for years!  Every time I think
about it I roar!  Anyway, I trust you'll make waves in Benetech.  You

In my experience the missing library problem is usually solved with one of 
the compat packages if using fedora/redhat. The compat-libstdc++ or 
compat-gcc packages are often helpful. Not sure what the equivelant 
packages would be for other distros though...

Well, I just now tried the unpack tool and it surprisingly worked here.
I'm running Slackware 10.1 on this box.  I thought I had heard something
about a miss matched library or some such a long time ago but never
persued it much.  Anyway, it does work here.  

Oh, on another subject, has any progress been made on getting the
O'reily books to work better with Daisy? The only answers or suggestions
in the past was to extract the HTML and use that in a browser.  I really
wanted to take advantage of the daisy navigation features.  They even
had a disclaimer that the o"Reily books couldn't be used in the windows
Daisy reader.  I didn't think it worked with Listen-up but can't say any
further on that one yet.

Let me answer the question about better access in Linux to BookShare
DAISY markup.

There are two points that are important:

1.)	We need a decent user agent. Perhaps Listen-Up will eventually
handle DAISY 3. I hope so. Meanwhile, we all know Kirk is overloaded, so
rolled up sleeves from competent programmers are the best way to get
from point A to point B on this one.

2.)	The DAISY markup BookShare uses is broken. They know that. They
know they need to fix it. But, they're reluctant to start on that until
we cann all agree on exactly how the markup should be done. I don't
blame them. They don't want to put in a fix only to find out they need
to put in another fix yet again. On this point everyone is hedging their
bets waiting for players and for the markup to settle down more
permanently.

well they sed that they would get back to me but it has ben almost 6 munths so i was
wondering if any one has used it and if it worked for them before i contact them again
i am using slackware 10.0 with kernel 2.4.26 if it helps

Windows user who's playing about in Linux like it's a toy or
something.  Six months!?  Six months!?  Good God, tromp me into the

all over this door mat, please.  I'm so insignificant that I don't
even matter.  I only paid $75.00 and I've waited six months to be able
to use it.  That is unless he's got some other way of doing it.  Man,
if you've waited six months, you're either the person with the worst
self esteme in the whole world or you've got Windows and you're just
playing around in Linux.  Which is it?  <chuckling>  Well, don't admit
to being insignificant.  You don't have to do that, but did you try
downloading the file again?  Did you do all the things it said to do
in the readme file in order to compile it?  Now you've got me curious.
Lemme see if I can make this work.  I tried running the copy I had and
it said something about not having shared libraries.  I dunnow what
that's all about.  I will try  unpacking the thing in the morning.

What is it with you guys?  If I paid $75.00 to get something and it
didn't work, I'd be foaming at the mouth!  I'd be livid!  I admit that
since I've gotten my BrailleNote I've been using it for Bookshare
books, but this is rediculous!  C'mon people, they have the Linux
tools, they're supposed to support it!  It won't get fixed if people
don't start yapping and yapping loud enough so people understand that
there's a real need!

If there is a Linux tool to unpack zip files, try changing the bks book file
from bookshare to a zip file by renaming it.  After this, you should be able
to unpack it provided you have a valid user name and password.

i have there phone number somewhere and that is how i contacted them i remember i also tryed it with fedora when i had it but it did not work
althow the tool was created in 2003 it says ver 1.1 so i guess it was not maintained much
i guess windows is good for something, unpacking my books.

well i use linux every day as well as windows and i have found that is a shame when
i have to download the book in linux move it to a vfat  drive then reboot in windows to unpack it
then if it is brf reboot again to linux and use nfb trans to translate it then open it in linux
if i could unpack it in linux it would make things loads easier.
and also i got my subscribtion 2/3 years ago and have only ben reading the books on my braille lite m40  witch has ben at freedom scientific being repared for the past munth and it is now ready to come home to me as soon as i pay the big buill

i also tryed gunzip and bunzip2 but none of them liked it
I was able to unpack the file with the windows unpack tool and it   opened ok but it did not work for the bks-unpack in linux.
I called them on the phone today and i got a voice mail and so i hope i hear from them soon.

Forgive me if someone else has pointed this out.  Bookshare *claims* to 
have a Linux version.  However they cannot give you any indication which 
distributions it actually works in, or that was the information i got after 
Ilast checked a few months back.
Frankly, there should have equal access and that even means dos, if they 
claim to be a nonprofit.  Not providing access at the basic levels, command 
line distributions of Linux, or even dos, is discrimination.  Granted many 
in the so called community use computer access as a way to create an 
us/them structure, with freedom scientific and the freedom box people, 
<and i still think they have tines> being some of the worse offenders.

able to use zip by unpacking books by renaming them and entering my password
when prompted.  I'm sorry to cause confusion for anyone, but I thought since

It would be quite possible for Shell World to host the unpack tool for
their subscribers. The way BookShare downloads work, this would work
very well.

When you download from BookShare, your download file is encrypted using
the same password you have for logging into BookShare. So, any one
BookShare subscriber still can't unpack someone else's download.

about this.

If you know the admin, can you ask him why any customer must wait 76 months 
for attention?
As for  Shell world hosting it, Ken says the unpack tool will not work in 
freebs.  That was the case a couple of months back when i asked the same 
thing.

I have not worked with freebsd, so this might not be helpful, but I do
know for a fact that the netbsd kernel does have linux binary support,
so the admin might want to investigate the possibility of being able to run
binaries compiled for linux under freebsd as well.

I have not worked with freebsd, so this might not be helpful, but I do know
for a fact that the netbsd kernel does have linux binary support, so the
admin might want to investigate the possibility of being able to run
binaries compiled for linux under freebsd as well.

Ace, that would be good.  They may already have it, but it's a simple
download and a simple, I mean even I  can do it, install.  

BTW, the name of the file to read is:  README.binary.  Sorry, I didn't
put the first part in caps, just in case you're trying to find it.
