Any alternate download sites for speakup ftp?

Hi all,

I'm in the process of attempting to download the Speakup modified version of Heidelberg from www.linux-speakup.org  For some reason, the speakup ftp server is severely slow.  I am using broadband, Comcast to be exact, and each disk is taking 15 to 20 hours to complete.  
Is there any alternate way to get these files, either from another server, a torrent, etc?

Tell me about it! I had that same experience over the President's day 
weekend; i.e., last weekend when I downloaded the 02/19/2005 set of four 
disks.

And you continue:

I've put them on my FTP server, and would love to know what kind of download 
speeds one gets when taking them from my site.

it's estimating roughly 2 hours and 30 mins for the first disk.  At this 
rate, I'll have them all before i would have had even one from the speakup 
server.

Interesting; 70kbps is about what I was seeing when I was downloading images
from Bill Acker's site; when the speakup site was down.

Glad I'm able to help, but it is a bit disheartening to hear about download
speeds of 70kbps when my ISP (cox business services) touts an upload
capability of 768kbps; i.e., on paper, the throughput is fully 10% of what
it should be, or could ultimately be. Now, that having been said, the best
throughput I was ever able to achieve by connecting to Bill's site was
370-380kbps, meaning that it took about a half hour to download one disk
image.

Anybody have any thoughts on why the download speed is as slow as it is, or
any thoughts on how to improve it? Am now using a pentium 4 machine, 2.53GHz
processor, 512MB of ram. The current plan is to upgrade this machine within
the next two weeks.

Hi john,

The confusion comes in here because  when companies offer speed clames, they 
do so measured in kBytes, and when  downloading  a program, your speed is 
typically displayed in kbits.  I'm no expert but the way I understand it is 
as follows:
You can roughly ascertain the rate of speed you would  obtain from the 
advertised KByte number by dividing by 8.  So for example, if your service 
advertises 768 KByte up, you divide that by 8 and get 96.  This means that 
in an ideal scenario, if there were no overhead packets and your connection 
were perfect, you would get 96 kbits per second.  However if you account for 
real world factors and overhead,you need to subtract a bit more from 96, 
hense putting you right about at where you are, 70.  I don't know if there 
are better formuli out there to account for the overhead.

Things become even more confusing because  when heard with speech, bothKb 
and kb sound exactly the same.

I'm working on trying to get a mirror set up at NC State ... I'll be double
checking on that tomorrow.

I also wouldn't be adverse to offering myself a simple taurant ceeder;
however, I would have to download the latest images from someone ... My
bandwidth recently increased, so my down is now 5 mb/s: pittiful compared to
the university, but not bad for home use. I believe my upload is still
around 512 killibits at best, more like only 320 on average, which
translates into around 40 to 45kb/s

70kb/s is around 72.91% of what's on paper.

Remember to do the same with your download ... You are getting about right
for 3mb/s down: just divide by 8

I don't think there's much to coordinate. That's the beauty of it.

My advice is to simply run a weekly rsync via cron--something like:

rsync -avtz --delete bumpy.braille.uwo.ca::ftp/speakup/disks/* \
[mirror.directory]

The only refinement I can think of that would probably be helpful is to
close the directory before doing the rsync to insure that no files are

My expectation is that we'll simply point public downloads against the
mirrors, once we have them. This should alleviate the load on Bumpy.

Please note that I'm talking about mirroring all of the various
community contributed technology available at Speakup, not just the
Fedora. I think you missed that.

So let me get them this info, and see if that's enough ... If so, I will be
forwarding you all the propper URL, and then: happy downloading I suppose.

Now, Janina, or anyone else: how can we quickly get those files over here?
Can we temporarly assign some high priority ... Or put them up on a fast
pipe for just a few minutes to get across?

I would like to sincerely thank NC State for their willingness to do this.
It was a simple matter of asking, and they quickly started working on how to
do it, rather than if to do it ... So, I think that's very nice of them.

The rsync is preferable because it will work far more quickly and
efficiently. Most of the data doesn't change from week to week. Rsync is
smart enough to only download the differences, that what's so pwerful
about rsync.
