georgia tech is very fast.

The synth would speak even if the ramdisk parameter was omitted.
However, you would not be able to mount a root image into ram.

hi
thanks to all for your help.
to continue with the saga:
my system :
166 mhz pentium with 64 megs ram
2 floppies 1.44,1.2
2 hard disks 32gig , 2.0gig
ide cdrom
what has transpired:
i finally got a boot disk to work by using the speakup.i file from the
cdrom , the speakup.i on the speakup website would not work at all.
i have installed 8.0 and created a boot disk , however it does not
have the synth installed in it, so although the system will boot i
still do not have speech on it.
does anyone have a kernel with dubltalk lite installed in it that you
could spare. if yopyou could atttach it to a message, i would greatly
appreciate the file.
thaaanks for all the help so far.

Perhaps this will work then. I think I've got the answers to your
problem.

Perhaps the way the binary downloaded got corrupted. In any case if you
got it off the cdrom this point is irrelevant.

Sometimes with external synthesizers you have to specify the serial port
to use like this: speakup_ser=0 so something like this should work. I
can't remember off hand the litetalk code so if I have it wrong please
excuse. Since you already have slack installed just edit /etc/lilo.conf
and add this line.

append="speakup_ser=0 speakup_synth=ltlk"

Again I might have the incorrect code for the litetalk but you can find
that easily enough.

Hi

I think that it is in the production of the color.gz disk because the first
prompt is found compressed image at block .... and the lister hasn't
reported that.

However, that's a good consideration, sorry for overlooking that.

So lister, if your still having problems could you tell us about the
hardware?

This may be a bit of a reach but when the root disk is to be loaded, it
will load into a /dev/ram device. There is enough memory in this machine,
isn't there? I don't know how much memory is required for the /dev/ram0

surprise me a bit. Your hard disk doesn't play into this until it is
explecitly mounted by the slackware installer or by you.

It seems like Jim typed the correct thing because he did mention the
synthesizer spoke..

Jim. Try these steps and see if this makes a difference.

1. When remaking your root disk do it from real dos mode, not a dos
window. Also, if you use speech in dos make sure it's not speaking as
the disk is getting written. You will be able to know when rawrite is
finished by the floppy disk's lack of spinning.

2. Use a different floppy for the root disk. It's possible that the
floppy you used is bad. Sometimes a forced format will not help so you
are better off just using another one.

3. I know you entered your synthesizer stuff correctly because you said
it spoke to you from the beginning so that is not an issue.

Write if you still have problems.

Jim,
I had this same problem once.
I believe that my mistake was what
I had typed at the boot prompt.
I just typed "speakup_synth=acntpc"
That is I didn't type "ramdisk"

As I recall, when I typed
"ramdisk speakup_synth=acntpc"
everything worked ok.

Good luck!

Larry

Hi

I asked if you could navigate up the screen before you inserted the root
disk. I asked this just to be sure that it is the root disk that is causing
the problem. I forgot to ask whether your using rawwrite under windows with
a screen reader. If so, are you using the DOS or Windows version of
rawwrite?

i have made the ddisks as instructed and entered the necessary info to
identify my synth and it comes up talking to that point however when i
try to load the root disk , it refuses to load with a error message :
kernet panic unable to load root at 2:1c.
anyone have any ideas, any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Hi

I've not had any trouble with Slackware 8. Could you clarify a few things?

Does the kernel identify your devices ok? You can use the navigation keys
to read up the screen?

You do get to the point where you're prompted for the root disk?

You did rawrite color.gz to the floppy that your inserting at this point?

Have you tried doing the color.gz disk again?

Gena
