List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: This may be a bit of a reach but when the root disk is to be loaded, it will load into a /dev/ram device. There is enough memory in this machine, isn't there? I don't know how much memory is required for the /dev/ram0 for this root image but the kernel has that compiled into it so this does surprise me a bit. Your hard disk doesn't play into this until it is explecitly mounted by the slackware installer or by you.
