exim slackware package

did someone say they had created an exim archive for slackware, a while
ago? if so, I need to get a hold of it.
sendmail is giving me the absolute well, you can guess the next word.

either a copy of exim, or told me the best place to download it. I
don't use exim, so I have no idea where to get it.

Are there docs somewhere on how to build slackware packages? I am
getting more and more interested in that, since starting to use
debian, and realizing just how few binary packages there are for
slackware. I'd like to try to find some free time, and increase that
number.

Well, there are some. However, this is kind of a sparce thing. I
learned how to do it by reading the little documentation out there
(look at linuxpackages.net), and by just doing it. If you want to
learn,, I'd be happy to teach you. It's not really a clear cut
process because of the variations in how source treees are built, but
I could still teach you the different ways it is done.

will tuxtalk work with slackware?
i got the cvs version
but i can't seem to compile it.
i read the instructions
but i can't find a ./configure script
in the package.
i might be missing something here.

There is no configure script.  You just check out tuxtalk and type
make to compile it.  You will need to have libgdbm-dev or it's
equivolent installed to compile.

i installed the libgdbm i still get the same errors
i am using an older version of slackware 8.1
so that might be my problem,
i plan to update soon,
what directory should tuxtalk be compiled in??
the only thing that i can think of here is
that i need to completly update my slackware

Hello, all! I just tried to find and download tuxtalk but faild.
Please, can someone provide me with a direct link? Another question
is if tuxtalk will work with version 1.5 of speakup or i should
download a cvs version?

Great. I checked out the site, and I'll build the package when I have
a little more time. Middle of next week probably. This one is a
difficult one because they're not using autoconf, so I'll have to do
some fittling to get it built properly. If someone has a good default
configuration file, providing it to me would really speed up the
process because I wouldn't have to write it myself. Or maybe the one
in the source is a good starting place? Either way, I'll check it
out.

Hi,
Steve holms has been kind enough to provide me with a slack package for exim.

for the rest of you, if you'd like centericq-4.9.9, I've created a slackware package complete with description but that can be worked on.
I'll upload it to my site at some point and make it available that way but for those of you what want it, just drop me a private email and I'll then upload it to the site.

I know that this Tuxtalk synthesizer is no longer in development but I
checked it out just to see what it can do.  It sounds like a foreign person
with English as a second language...No offense to anyone on this list.

Speech-Dispatcher and Flite/Festival.

As far as I know, Kirk has not officially stated that tuxtalk isn't
being developed anymore. In fact, when speech-dispatcher and
speechd-up became a viable software speech solution for speakup, I
posted to this list asking if that meant that tuxtalk wasn't going to
be developed anymore, to which Kirk gave a resounding no, that
tuxtalk will still be developed.

Oh OK.  Apologies for my false statement.  LOL.  It just looks dead 
and untouched for ages.  Without documentation, it will be hard to 
use for anything useful but I did get it to read files.  I do not 
think that I was on this list at the time of the release of 
Speech-Dispatcher.  Oh well, it would be nice to see Tuxtalk develop 
into something useful.

Yeah, it would be nice if programmers, including myself, had time to
help develop tuxtalk and many other projects. It would also be nice if
programmers, and nonprogrammers alike had time to document what there
already is to document in tuxtalk and other projects, (sigh).

Why should you receive a response?  If you make any significant
additions to any project either source code or documentation wise if
will be accepted if it's any good.  If you need permission then you'd
never get around to it in the first place.

tuxtalk has no documentation, and I can understand why since it's  still being written, but  I have a few questions conciddering the docs that are there don't match what you should be doing.

I typed make to compile it, but now what? you can't make install it, and I see no binary that I can even run. does anyone have a little more detail that they can fill in here? I'm willing to write basic install instructions so that there isn't any more confusion like this if knowone else wants to, heh

is a binary called say which gets created in the current directory after
you type make. Just copy that to somewhere in your path. If you're going
to use tuxtalk with speakup you will need to make the softsynth device:
mknod /dev/softsynth c 10 26 Then you'll just load the speakup_sftsyn
module and starrt tuxtalk with: say -d You'll lose the console that you
start tuxtalk on as tuxtalk will not go into the backgroup and if you
try say -d & it doesn't work as expected. Also once the module is loaded
be careful unloading it it locked my box up solid yesterday.

how is tuxtalk's speach quality? I may test it on one of the boxes 
here but if it's quality isn't good at al then I'll just stay using my 
acent or my transport.

Well, I tried Tuxtalk once and it sounded like a Braille n Speak on canabis.  That was a couple of months ago, however, 
so it may have changed since then.

I'm having all kinds of problems here trying to get tuxtalk to work -
especially with Speakup.  I did actually get the say command to speak
something by piping text into it via a pipe or <file.txt.  But it
hangs and I have to do a ctrl-C to exit the program every time.  When
I tried following some suggested steps recently, I got "daemon mode:
no such device" whenever I did a 'say -d'.

Now here is something really wierd.  When I do a 'modprobe
speakup_sftsyn', I my speakout synth comes up talking and the lsmod
listing shows the following.

The softsynth device was defined as softsynth c 10 26 per previous
instruction but I get no speech from tuxtalk but my speakout is going
along just fine but I had specified sftsyn <strange>.  I did a diff
compare on both the sources and compiled objects for the two synth
drivers in question and there are differences between sources as well
as objects so I figure the modules aren't duplicated or any of that.
The lsmod listing shows the wierd thing though.

Anyone figure this one out?:)

I *NEVER* got this to work with Speakup.  When I did a "say -d" I get
this:

Also, which order should I do the below commands? should I load
speakup_softsynth first followed by "say" (when fixed) or visa versa?

Also, I kept getting my speakout when I quite deliberately specified
speakup_sftsyn.  In fact, see the abreviated lsmod listing below.

done the normal modprobe to bring up speakout.  When I experimented

how close is tuxtalker to completion?  or rather how usable is the cvs
version?  i only ask because a friend has a silly new laptop that doesn't
have a serial port.  she has a synth but nowhere to plug it in!

Hi,

	Tuxtalk is nowhere near a useable state for working with speakup. The cvs version which you can  grab and try, simply takes text that you tyupe in to  tuxtalk directly and vocalizes it out through your speakers.

	Kirk's plan has been to modularize it and load it into the kernel. Speakup is not yet ready for modular synth drivers. It's gonna be a while, but don't discount it yet.

Hi,

	At this point, Tuxtalk is just a "toy" to play text to speech through your sound system.

	It doesn't work with Speakup, (yet).

	It is not a module (yet).

	It is a little program  based on the rsynth base to demonstrate that software speech can be done. It needs a lot of work to make it fast. It needs work on it's pronunciation to make it more intelligible. It will then need to be modularized to load into kernel space in order to be used with Speakup... We got a long way to go yet.

	But, like Geoff said, it's there in CVS for anyone to try, play, learn. Have fun!

No and no.  As far as I know, tuxtalk doesn't' actually compile as a module
yet.
