Hi all,
Trying to get speakup, speechd-up, speech-dispatcher and espeak working in Debian SID... System is Athlon 64 2, kernel v2.6.25.4 with Debian SID up to the latest packages.
I have Speakup working with hardware synth. Have installed Debian packages for espeak and speech-dispatcher... tests ok.
Question: Is there a debian package for speechd-up? or what library is needed to compile speechd-up from source with a 64-bit architecture? I am getting the error at the 'make all' stage:

well for my debian 32 bit system the packages I needed to install to compile
speech-dispatcher and speechd-up as far as I remember were
libspeechd2 libspeechd-dev libglib2.0-0 libglib2.0-dev
I think that was all I needed it's also a good idea to type ldconfig before
compiling I've found.

I'm pretty sure this will work for you:

I think if you have speech-dispatcher working, when you install speechd-up
from the package above, your machine will start talking. If it doesn't let
me know.

Hi all,
Thanks go to Greg and John for the links to the binary Ubuntu/debian packages for speechd-up (amd64) versions 0.4 and 0.5 respectively.
I have tried them both, both work, however the package for 0.5 complains about the /proc... not existing... (Should be /sys/modules...).
I am having problems with both packages though. Randomly (or so it seems) software speech just stops talking. I have checked with orca when this happens, and everything seems to be in place. i.e. speech-dispatcher still talks, speechd-up is still running, the speakup_soft module is still loaded). Speakup core is compiled into the kernel. It stops talking anywhere from 2 minutes to... right now, version 0.4 has been working well for about 5 hours. I have had it working with and without orca and the gnome-terminal concurrently.
I'm going to continue using/testing, but if anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate hearing them...

This is the first feedback I've ever gotten about my debian speechd-up
package. It's been downloaded a bunch of times but as far as I know, I'm the
only one who ever actually used it.
I'm setting up an AMD64 machine right now (my doubletalk is chattering away
right next to me) so I will be able to test the AMD64 package. I am pretty
sure the i386 package works well because I've installed it hundreds of times
on several different types of computers. But I'm not sure the 2 packages are
the same. Speechd-up didn't change but linux and speakup did. My speechd-up
script attempts to install an init.d script that you can use to start & stop
software speech and it had to be modified quite a bit for kernels 2.6.21 and
greater.
