Killing a module

Hello, listers!
Does anyone know what steps I should take in order to kill a module from the
memory? One of my module locked the modem up and does not want to be
removed. Whenever I try rmmod with either -a or the -r options, I always get
"device or resource busy". What is the other to kill a monster? of course, I
understand that I can always reboot, but how would I do it without one?

So, the Dectalk I have is an external and is several years old.  I bought 
in in um 1998 for a job I was doing and then never used it.  At the time, 
it came with discs for installing it with DOS.  Do I need to worry bout 
updating it or anything or does Speak Up come with all the software bits 
to take care of that.

I don't think so.  I run a dectalk with version 4.2cd, which is the lates
version by digital.  I would just try it with what you have.

If you have a dectalk express, you have everything you need.  I recently purchased one wich came with 4.61.  This version was
unsatisfactory.  It certainly wasn't the dec talk we all know and love.  I flashed 4.2c which was the version on my older unit.  It
works a lot better.  Although, there was a 4.2d I think.  there was a web site at one time wich served various dec talk stuff.
However, I can't remember the url.  I know it was something like http://www.*/rongemma/dectalk.*.  I originally got the url from a
friend of mine who worked at dec several years ago.

Hi, I am assuming you are refering to the Dectalk Express. Yes, Speakup
comes with ssil drivers for the Dectalk, and you can specify it on the
commandline when you load Linux.For example:

 speakup_synth=dectlk

Then, Speakup will load speech for the Dectalk Express. If you wanted to
load a bns instead you would enter:

 speakup_synth=bns

Of course during setup you have the option of having this come up
automatically, or create a menu of choices to choose synths on startup.

By way of picking a nit...

Speakup's interface to the DEC Express (or for that matter, any
synthesizer) is not a SSIL driver. SSIL is a Windows standard which
was invented, if I'm not much mistaken, by Arkenstone, for use with
the original OpenBook software, then JFW and some other folks adopted
the standard as well. SSIL is only a Windows standard and has
absolutely zip to do with Speakup.

can get it to run with speakup. What com parameters does speakup expect

The Dectalk Express is set up to receive data sent at 9600 baud, 8 data
bits, 1 stop bit, and no parity.  I'd assume that's what Speakup would
probably expect.  At any rate, that would be a good starting point.

this isn't the express. it's the original dectalk. uses the decext 
driver.

Change the 1200 to 9600 Baud, and remember that when you are talking to your
"classic" dectalk, that the port you use to talk to it is *NOT* the port
that Speakup  will want to use.

It has both a host and a terminal port and I always forget which is which.
But one of them will go in to setup when you give it a break signal -- it
expects you to be talking to it with a terminal. The other one won't respond
to a Break -- that's the one you connect to your PC.

I have Speakup working fine with a classic Dectalk here.

btw the terminal port has a picture of a monitor next to it and the 
host has the word host near it I think. nice and easy to feel the 
difference.

You're right. The terminal port has a picture of a terminal, and  That's the
one that accepts the break signal from a terminal. I just use Telix in DOS,
or Como and do an Alt-B or a CTRL-Scroll lock which sends a true long break
signal.  Dectalk will respond with the prompt "Setup". Then you can type:
	set spokensetup on

And after that it will voice everything it sends back to your terminal.

Hi Alex.  Debee has it right.  Don't forget to use the save command when
you have the host parameters set right.  8 data bits, 9600 baud is what
speakup expects.

I have one of these old DecTalks too.  I was actually the one who
suggested to Kirk that he modify the express driver to work with the old
external DecTalk.  It's quite stable and extreemly useful, though the
old DecTalk part number algorithm is anoying.
