M20/40 status.

Hi listers, I'm hoping to be getting into the linux world soon, as soon
as I get my new note-taker, an m20 or a Braille Note. Can anyone confirm
if these devices are working? I note in the Speakup-modified Fedora
Distro Install guide, it mentions that all Blazie products are
supported, except Milenium and Pac Mate. However, I contacted fs, the
makers of these products, who said it should work using the bns option
of a screen reader. So, what's the story here? Also, does the keynote
gold SA work?

chip, which is used on the m20/40, isn't too bad, much better than the
blt 2000! But, yes, I would *love* to see the bn supported, even though,
JFW doesn't support it, and the m series does! [grin].

Speaking of synths, are there *any* hardware synths that work with
speakup that are still in production, a part from the ones on
notetakers? Just curious.

DecTalk has upgraded its external synthesizer to accommodate a USB 
connection, but it still has the serial port capability. Hence, my plan is 
to purchase one; primarily for use with my linux box, but it's nice to know 
that it could be placed on the windows box should I ever use that machine 
for internet broadcasting.

Why would you choose Windows for Internet broadcasting? Seems to me
Linux is a more stable and more accessible server for that.

True. Thought about that after I sent the message. The plan someday (and I
do mean someday) is to do a show on ACB radio. Now, by the time I get around
to moving forward on that agenda, my linux awareness / linux skills will, in
all probability, be at the point where using the linux box would be a viable
option, not to mention that its no doubt the more desirable option for the
reason you stated.

I don't need to be sold on the stability of linux; having only rebooted  my
machine once since late september; and that only having been done because I
couldn't remember the "service vsftpd restart" command after having made
necessary modifications to my vsftpd.conf file, <smile>!

Actually, even if you didn't remember how to restart vsftpd, you could
still have restarted it without rebooting by going into single user
mode, and then going back into multiuser mode using telinit to switch
the run levels.

Many thanks for taking the time to post this, Greg, but I have to emphasize 
in the strongest terms that I am a "major league" newby when it comes to 
linux; hence, your post engenders the following questions:

1. How does one go into "single user" mode?
2. What is telinit?
and
3. What is a run level?

Okay, I'm not requesting that those questions be addressed on list, given 
that the preponderance of participants here are obviously operating at a 
more sophisticated / informed level than I am at this point. . For now, I 
pretty much lurk on this list, trying to understand what little I can while 
I spend the rest of my "linux edification" time reading man pages and just 
playing around with my system.

Keep on keeping on, folks; I'll get a handle on all this stuff at some 
point!

You would do that with the command

as root, where x is the number of the run level to switch to. As for
which run levels control what, I believe that is
distribution-specific. In slackware, run level 1 is the single user
run level, and 3 is the multiuser run level for running text consoles
without running the x window system.

Interestingly, man runlevel doesn't define runlevel, it simply provides
info on how to querry and manipulate.

I guess man page authors sometimes ignore, or are stumped, by the
basics. Just a speculation based on unscientific observation.

Helping the Newby

Ah yes, now that "run level" stuff is coming back to me from what I read in 
a linux book about a week ago. Indeed, I even now remember changing one 
digit in the inittab file from "5" to "3" so that my machine wouldn't boot 
up in "gui" mode. (Of course, given how often I've rebooted, or had to 
reboot, come to find out I really didn't need to "sweat" that one over 
much.)

Just a brief note to thank you, Greg, and you, Janina, for the "on list" 
edification.

These are specific to Fedora/Redhat.

Internet broadcasting tools which work in Linux?
I ask for two reasons,  all of the spectrum radio people I talk with, as 
in on the dial radio tell me that while they would love to use Linux for 
things like editing  and  other work when it crosses over to the net, it 
is just not stable.
Second one of the most respected blind Internet broadcasters Steve Wolf, I 
believe that is his first name 
at wolffm.com
told me the same thing when I asked the same question that all his 
broadcasting related things were still done in Windows.  Granted these 
people are used to working in the traditional broadcasting industry, not 
just putting something together from home.
Still no one knows everything on Linux, and things change all the time 
with upgrades.  And it has been a while since I asked Steve at least.

so, may I just have a list of useful tools, and if such tools are more 
commonly found in one Distribution than another?

I believe the original post had to do with serving streams which would
be a job for icecast--assuming we're talking audio.

When you ask about tools, the list gets very long indeed. For that I
would suggest the Linux Audio lists. Some of the basics, though, are
sox, and ecasound.

I am currently adding tracks to some studio sessions using ecasound.

What I ultimately envision doing is a radio show on either ACB radio or the
"for the people" (FTP, not to be confused with "file transfer protocol")
site. I don't know whether or not anyone who is doing internet broadcasting
on either of those sites is using a linux box to do so.

Now, when Janina responded to my initial post, she did say:

I believe that the folks I know who are doing internet broadcasting are 
using their computers as music terminals or studios which stream content up 
to some other server which people then log on to; hence, were I to do this, 
I don't believe my computer would be acting as a server.

My primary motivation for becoming conversant with linux was because I 
wanted to host my own http and ftp sites. Now, if my father said this once 
in his life, he said it ten thousand times: "The right tool for the right 
job." (He worked in construction all his life.) So, given my desire to 
self-host my own jamsite.us domain, and with
the above-quoted montra in mind, there was no way I was going to use 
microsoft's software for that task, with all its security flaws, 
instability, etc. However, if, in fact,  what Hank believes is 
correct...that their is no linux software that supports cross-fading, then 
windows, even with all its flaws, may be the "right tool" for that, the 
"internet dj", job. Indeed, less than an hour ago, I read Sean McMahon's 
post about the availability of OCR software running under linux.

The point of this discussion being simply this; (and I'm not pointing any 
fingers at any specific individuals on this list; I am oftimes perturbed by 
a pervasive attitude which seems to exist in certain sectors of the linux 
community which holds that anyone who uses microsoft software is the 
anti-christ. Hey, you use what you got to use...or what you know how to 
use...to get the job done in the way that you want or need for it to be 
done. I would exhort those who hold the aforementioned view to allow it to 
serve as a motivation for working toward the day when the catalog of 
application programs written for linux is every bit as robust as that 
written for windows, which operating system, whether those in the linux 
community would care to acknowledge it or not, (and irrespective of how they 
or anyone else feels about it) is the predominant operating system today.

I'm not into dj applications, so I don't think about cross fading in the
sense of queueing up several selections and having them play
automatically. So, I just plain haven't looked into that, if that's what
you mean.

I can tell you that I can fade up and fade out with ecasound. And, it's
certainly possible to have a second selection start fading up when the
first one fades out, but I rather suspect you may have something
different in mind.

I am very convinced, however, that we are not as knowledgable about the
options available to us from the command line for audio management. Let
me put it this way: Does anyone here use gstreamer from the cli? Did you
know you can? I just learned that the other day.

stream our January conference on the net using Fluendo, the Vorbis
video/audio lib theora streamer. Here's the salient part of the email I
got from Fluendo's maintainer:

available on the Fluendo website.

As for a shell script for playing back the stream with GStreamer
something containing something like this should work:
gst-launch gnomevfssrc location=http://mirror.fluendo.com:8800 !
decodebin ! alsasink

Using osssink instead of alsasink might be an advantage since it is more
broadly deployed. There is also a sunaudiosink for Solaris users.

The http address of course you replace with your own.

As for mplayer you just run: mplayer http://mirror.fluendo.com:8000 and
it should work. People just need to make sure they have a new Theora
enabled mplayer installed.

Besides, I wouldn't presume to focus the video stream. And, if I were to
stream only audio, I would use a different tool.

Icecast is the server that will support Theora.  Icecast was given 
experimental Theora support, as well as Vorbis 1.1, Flack, and Speex.  OF 
those tools only Vorbis 1.1 is in the stable release.

Actually, as far as I know, you choose the bns option only for the legacy note takers,
such as the bns, or blt 2000. The m20/40 units are supported as a
doubletalk lt.

choose the bns option. Perhaps that's only for jfw.
I just wish they had the v4.1 update docs on the site, since that's
where the speechbox mode was "readded" to the M series.

Are you saying that certain ROM revisions of the Freedom Scientific
Millennium will function as TTS speech synths for current, CVS versions
of Speakup?

You say "M20/40" by which I understand both Millennium 20 and Millennium
40. But what ROM versions? Beginning with what revision?

And, do I understand that the speakup_synth keyword for these is 'bns?'
Is this what you're saying?

As far as I'm aware, revision 4.1 and later include "speechbox" mode,
similar to the older notetakers. What we're all trying to pin down is
whether it acts as a bns or a double/lite talk. That's how I see it.

Yes, this is correct. The Millennium 20/40 units from Freedom
Scientific can be used as tts speech synthesizers with speakup or any
other screen reader since firmware version 4.0, or 4.1. Actually I've
just looked at the freedom scientific site download section, and I see
that firmware 4.0 can be downloaded for free, so the tts functionality
is available since 4.1 and higher, because I remember that the speech
box mode was reintroduced in the first non-free firmware update, and
that appears to be 4.1, rather then 4.0. As far as I know, the
Millennium 20/40 would be used with a screen reader as a doubletalk
lt, the speakup keyword for which is ltlk I believe. I'm going to post to the
fs support list, so we can end the speculation once and for all.

Can you post the address of that fs support list? I have some questions for them
about how to keep a bns from giving me a "file is full" message, a problem which
ocurs both in and outside of speakup.

messages, I maybe able to help. If you're getting them in speechbox
mode, then add more pages to your clipboard before going into
speechbox mode, which will make the buffer for storing the text to be
spoken bigger. If you're getting file is full in other circumstances,
then you'll need to describe them.

You'll get a reply from the list serve, and just follow the
