Well, first of all, when the boot screen comes up, you type swspeak
Try counting to 15 after you turn on the computer, since it'll probably take
about 5 or so seconds for your bios, and that will give you some lee way ...
After you type swspeak and hit enter, then wait for about a minute or two
... Until you get to the prompt, at which point you type speechd-up
Take care,
Sina

Hello folks,
I know that the commands to start GRML are:
grml swspeak
speechd-up
I, however, cannot get it to start. I am sure that there is a specific part
in the boot process where I need to type these commands. How do I know when
I need to type them?
Thanks,
Robby

Is this with any software speech synth?
I have GRML, that I have used with my DecTalk express, but I'm not sure how
I would get it to use software speech, as I run it from a CD.

This is to fire up speech dispatcher with speakup set to use that as
software speech.
As for getting dectalk express working ... I think, and I highlight the word
think, I saw some people having that working on this list, but you'll have
to ask them.
I don't think it would be that difficult though, but maybe that's just me
being overly optimistic.
Good luck though, and let us know what you discover?

I have gotten it to work with my DecTalk express, and I have the commands

with the same GRML CD?

Yes.
You just have to boot using 'grml swspeak' and type 'speechd-up'
when booting finished.
Notice: I slightly reworked the swspeak feature. grml 0.7 will boot
with 'grml swspeak' as well but will provide some sound output
already during startup. This means you should be able to notice
whether your soundcard works or not already during bootup. And
before being dropped into the shell when booting finished you'll get
a short notice via sound as well. Starting the software speech
support then will work through running 'swspeak'. You can use the
speechd-up command as well, but swspeak is an alias to improve the
zsh setup for use with speechd-up.
Main work on grml 0.7 has been finished, now I'm running some last
few tests and updating documentation and webpage for the new
release. Expect to find grml 0.7 in the next few days on the
mirrors.
I also wrote some documentation for accessibility related issues in
the grml-wiki:
http://wiki.grml.org/doku.php?id=accessibility
If you have any feedback I'll appreciate it if you send it to me.
HTH && regards,

Hi all, I have a couple of issues, and these are my options.
Back in February, I found a dell inspiron 2500 for about $450 on overstock.com.
When i got the thing, it had came with Windows xp home, I thought ok, fine what ever so i installed a screenreader on it, first problem.
The dcm was all screwed up and i had no way of fixing this, well after that i almost got a refund on it sinse i had no way of fixing it and I tried everything.
I finally reformatted and got a propper coppy of windows on it, and yeh, dcm is still screwed, so today, i was messing with grml on it, and it seemed to work.
Can someone please help me out here and help me turn this laptop in to a linux machine, this dcm thing is really geting to me, and i want to find something a little bit more useable.
The specs on this laptop are.
pentium III 800 mhz with 256 mb of ram and a 20 gig harddrive.
I have no external synth sinse the one I had well sort of got killed by a freakly high windstorm.
Is there anyway i could install grml to the harddrive, still using the swspeak kernel, and use speechd-up on boot up to get speakup to speak from there?
Sorry for all the stupid questions.
Farhan.

I did this about a month ago with debian. Just clean up the hd, and
install whatever distro you want, just like you would on a regular
desktop. You may also want to look at
http://www.linux-laptop.net/
to see if there are any notes/articles about your model.
BTW, what's a dcm?

DCM is a windows thing standing for display chaining manager. In that
world, how a screen reader for windows interfaces with the video card. Yet
another advantage for speakup and the console.
