I'm thinking of trying redhat, probably 6.2 as 7.0 has that kernel
headers trouble. What's the difference if I get the cheapbytes CD, or the
official redhat one, they sell both, redhat one is more expensive. Also,
there's a professional version, for over $100, what's better about it than
the cheap CD? For about $4.99, I can get a source, install, and
documentation CD, now I just put zipspeak in to my real linux partition for
the mean time until I get the CD.

This is an excelent question Brent. There are two differences. The first
is that the more expensive version allows you to email RedHat for support
in getting the system setup. (Email only and only for setup is free. And a
30 day limit or some such.) The second difference is that one is much more
expensive then the other one.

Short take: buy it cheap.

Is there a difference between the professional or the regular, or is it all
the same stuff on the CD, or obtainable elsewhere?

There is bound to be some difference. But since I am not a RedHat
marketing weenie, I don't know them. Given your level of expertise I can't
imagine what is on the profesional version that you need to buy. All the
same, it is your money and you should spend it soon if it is buring a hole
in your pocket. If your like the rest of us, you will get the CD for $4.95
and find more interesting places to spend it. In fact, you could send the
difference to me. I am sure to have interesting places to spend it.

The only reason I was thinking of that one, as that best buy only had the
pro version for such a high price, I think it's just a lot of e commerce
junk in the pro version that's different, don't really need it anyways. I
think it's just the fact of paying a lot to get something in a store that's
cheap online.

Hi Brent,

I know of *no* kernel headers trouble with RH7. I have three
systems running it with no problems that I can detect. One listmember
asserted that there were problems, apparently because he didn't like the
way the kernel RPM's were named.

No; this is totally bogus.
Interestingly enough the pro version comes with another cd
and some very good books. If you however don't need the books get the
cheap and _read_ some online documentation.

And you do have to install the kgcc package to build the kernel but no problems
there.

Another difference that I can see the package you getting in the store that the cd doesn't give you is the Red Hat manual in print form, but they probably have it on the cd anyways.

Eventually you can obtain everything that's on theprofessional CD, except
for some commercial stuff. Professional has more apps, database engine and
some other things necessary for corporate networks.

Oh, I suppose there's little difference in 6.2 or 7.0. Does ppp configure
without x-win, or will I need help to get online? I know someone else was
wondering that too, linux for dumbies just tells the x way of doing
reconfiguration of network interfaces. I know ifconfig would control the IP
address of the ppp interface, but as how to establish ppp0 as an interface
they say to go to the network thing in the control panel.
I wonder what the junk going around that redhat mixed kernel 2.4 headers
with the 2.2 kernel to cause bad compiling of programs.

What does that package do? Does it solve that so called mixed kernel and
headers issue? Will it be safe to use the kernel on the boot disk after
installation, as I know redhat will copy it's own kernel in off the CD, or
do I need to keep from rebooting and compile while I still have speech (if
ppp is available in that kernel). Does the compilation with speakup in it
turn in to an rpm that I'd have to install with rpm -i?
It'll be an experience installing with 1 disk instead of using both a root
and boot disk separately. Hopefully I'll be able to use fdisk to get the
partitions set up, but I probably can just use the option to skip it and
reinitialize the partition I already have, just saving /etc/asound.conf to
restore alsa when I get to that.

OK, it's odd that those places make it sound like the pro really is a
supreme version. It's nice to know that it's not worth the extra cost for
some books and stuff that I would have no use for, seeing I have no scanner
to scan them with anyways.
I know linux for dummies didn't tell me much more than I knewalready
besides x-windows and a list of compatible hardware, which may help if I
consider getting a machine to have only linux on.
I think the basic deal is to stay away from winmodems and hardware that's
too old or new.

So true. I guess not everyone just presses <end> and <spacebar> at the
package selection screen, thereby selecting "everything". <grin>

Oh, will it have a text based ppp config utility?
I've also heard of kickstart installing, how that works I'm not sure, but I
bet I'm going to have to do it if I have to do this on a laptop with a
swappable cd and floppy drive where I can't boot from anything but CD to
get it installed, and my com port is used by my dec express, so serial
console is out. Can redhat do installation with parallel port console? Just
delete the device file for a serial port I don't have and symlink it to the
parallel port device file? Could this install be done by modem, suppose not
as pcmcia isn't in native support to dial with anything, or to receive the
connection.

I'm talking about client end ppp. Although, down the road when I get
broadband, if I can get it, I might want to serve one dial-in line for
myself to use on the road, so I can drop my current dialup if it's not
already included in the deal with such a connection. Apparently it's not
like the debian linuxconf, but maybe similar.
Does kickstarting work pretty good, is it a good idea on a laptop where I
must boot from CD, can I have kickstart on it's existing dos partition?

Hi, Kerry!
I didn't seem to find KGCC on Redhat's CD. What name would it be under?

Well, I always did PPP configuration in RedHat with Linuxconf. Linuxconf is
a system management utility used with RedHat machines.
