Hi!

I am not altogether sure but I think you can make sure that I E downloads in
binary mode for many files.  It attempts to determine the mode by the file's
extension but you should be able to force it to do what you want.

I will explain how it behaves for me.  First, I get the download file
screen.  I am asked if I want to open the file from its current location or
save it to disk.  Then I get the save as screen.  There is a choice on that
screen.  One of the choices is "all files".  I think that if you select that
for the save as type, you can override the default choice and assure
yourself of a binary download.

If you do not see both screens, it may be that you have some options set
differently in internet explorer.  I would be happy to compare settings so
we might be able to figure out exactly what settings get internet explorer
(or as my wife calls it, Internet exploder) to work well for this task --
smile.

mode and a txt file in text. But for unrecognized files (such as many disk
images) it checks the file's header info. If that appears to be text, then

The save as dialog has no bearing on the method of downloading. It's only
effect is to attempt to let you choose the name and check for other files
with the same extension. If you choose to rename the file, often the
extension will remain intact.

The moral of the story is that Macroslop has decided users don't know what
they want. Therefore they will decide. They will leave a few things in to
make those who foolishly believe they know what they are doing think the
OS is under control. Meanwhile Macroslop will still decide how things
should be done.

For those who live exclusively in a Linux environment, the distinction
between text mode and binary mode transfers is often irrelevant. When
maintaining my web site I transfer everything in binary mode, because I do
not use the DOS/Windows newline conventions in any of my text files, so I
do not want the ^m changed to ^A^M or vice versa. Viva La Binary!

My windows box runs win95.  This self righteous presumption is bad enough
there, but struck me as being more and more prevalent in later windows
versions, thus my reason for not upgrading.  Now that I use linux 95% of
the time, I don't miss it a bit.  This single aspect of microsoft's
operations shits me more than probably any other.  This along with their
rediculous market share gives them the power to do whatever they happen to
think is a good idea, and the average computer user just wears it.  That's
just so wrong.

In the past, I had no problems using the Windows version of FTP.  To use it,
from the start menu, use the up and down arrows to find the run option.
Press enter, and in the resulting dialog box, enter "ftp FTP_ADDRESS" where
"FTP_ADDRESS" is the ftp site you are trying to connect to.  Here, I would
put an example of the speakup ftp site.

assuming most people have a left and right windblows key, or if they don't
I'll outliine both examples below.
rightwindows+r brings up the run dialog box. or, in the case of those who

That is all good and fine, assuming that the run option is the only item on
the start menu that starts with the letter R.  In most cases this is the
case, and so it may be worth the gamble.  In the case of the hot key of open
windows r I believe this to be standard accross all windows OS excluding
Windows 3.xx of course.

Yes, but you need a DOS screen reader because the c:\windows\ftp.exe is a
pc console application--yes there is such a designation in Windows. JFW
covers this to sufficient degree to make it usable with ftp. Not sure that
Win-Eyes does, though.

Just to confirm.  Window-Eyes does not have support for talking dos boxes.  So if you run console programs under windows 95/98/me you will have to have a 
dos screen reader.  If you already own one use that.  If not and you probably won't use it much get jaws for dos.  It is freeware so that can work.

Sorry for going so far off topic here, but I need to come to the defense of
Window-Eyes.  It is the only windows screen reader I use and all the various
tasks I perform with windows, access is excellent.  There are many apps I
run without any custom set files.  Perhaps Window-Eyes had some tough times
at its beginning but I now consider it a world class product running circles
around JFW.

But anyhow, back to linux and speakup.

Some day soon, I would like to be able to figure out some of speakup's guts
so I can add features such as speak windows, a major part of both Vocal-Eyes
and Window-Eyes.

forget about reading any application that doesn't have a set file written
for it. At least with jfw, you can find your way around depending of
course the app you're trying to use uses window classes that are known to
jaws.
and given that people code in delfi or some other damned language that
doesn't use known window classes, that's not always possible either.

systems, if the person installing Windows tells you that they are
going to remove your DOS screen reader, kill them on the spot!  Do not
pass go, do not collect $200.  If they say they will leave it alone
before the knife falls, fine.  If they refuse, continue and get
another techie.  

Making a DOS user go to Windows cold turkey is cruel and inhuman
treatment.  Better yet, go to Gnu/Linux.

course the app you're trying to use uses window classes that are known to
jaws.

doesn't use known window classes, that's not always possible either.

Hi.  I don't want to start a screen reader war here on what is best and
what is shitty.  What works for some may not work for others.  I happen to
respectfully disagree about window-eyes not being usable without set
files.  In my job when I do have to use windows I've found that some
proppriatary software will speak much better when using window-eyes rather
than jfw.  Also, if jfw didn't include a lot of its scripts for it's many
applications it would not talk very nicely by itself.  When it comes down
to it.  Whether you use emacspeak or speakup for Linux or whether you use
window-eyes or jfw for windows everyone has their personal tastes and
preferences as well as personal experience which may lead one toward one
product or another.  At least we can agree on the fact that Linux is much
better than Windows so regardless of whether we prefer jfw or window-eyes
on the windows side at least we agree that speakup is awesome on the linux
side.  *smile*

PS:  Please don't take what I said personally, I'm just showing the other
side of the coin.

I might disagree with that.
I had a chance to try out both wineyes
and jfw for as long as I wanted and I could've
done anything I wanted on the machine.
After about 30 minutes with jfw,
I walked away from the system running it 
in disgust, and said that it 
was shitty, politly of course.
I then used wineyes for 2 hours, and found that
for the most part I loved it.
I of course chose to buy it as my
windows screenreader afterwords.

I did with a few problems but from what I saw, jfw and wineyes both looked
somewhat more cumbersom to use.
I agree that it's a matter of preference as to what screen reader you use,
and the only reason I use jfw, is because it's what I know. it's what I
learned to use.

I agree with that also. windows9x don't use dynamic memory
allocation. this means that the stack is prone to becoming fragmented. and
that is why windblows9x falles over more often than it's nt counterpart.
all breeds of unix and windows nt/2000 all use dynamic memory allocation
so as to give us the advantage of longer uptime. and a less fragmented
stack, thus fewer crashes or lockups.

Actually this gets more blame then is reality. The simple fact is that the
memory fragmentation is not a large factor. What is a major factor is that
all Win9x versions (including ME) include a large sum of code from
win3x. This code is included for either of two reasons. The first was
speed and the second was backward compatibility. The later is te main
reason for 3x code appearing in ME.

The fact is that 95 had about a third of its code written in 16 bit
code. This was for compatibity and speed. When they released 98, the share
dropped to about 25%. All indications were that ME would retain a good
chunk of the 16 bit code though it would be re-written.

In all of the versions of winblows not in the NT line programs could
communicate through shared memory. This set the system up for memory
leaks. As if a program allocated memory then failed to release said memory
it was out of service until the next reboot. This was done because there
was no way to know what memory was being shared and the OS recovering the
memory lead to spectacular crashes.

WinNT took a different approach to this. In the ealy versions of NT, the
memory was duplicated to different programs. This worked fine as long as
you didn't run too many 16 bit programs. Then in version 4, they decided
to put all 16 bit programs into seperate memory space. This gave good
performance and yet protected all but other 16 bit programs from their
memory overwriting ways.

I know this is more then most want to know. But if you are going to talk
about the failings of a company bent on domination at least get it right.

Hi all,

Kirk, you mentioned two things you wanted in the FAQ.  One was about
switching one's machine to receive binary when downloading the proper
files.  The other was something about rawrite.  Can you please tell me
again what that was?

Also, can somebody give me specific info on how to switch to binary
mode when using the web.  Do windows people have to do a certain thing
or what.

The only time you need to switch to binary is if you're using
an ftp client such as ftp under linux, or ftp.exe under windows.
In that case, all you need to do is to type
"binary" before starting the file transfer.
If you're using a web browser, you don't need to do anything,
since in most cases, the browser knows a binary file when it sees one.

no they don't.
and ordinarrily you wouldn't have to worry about doing anything special
for linux either.
Just point out however, that if you try to download a linux binary with a
browser eg, lynx, you might just see the code of the file you are trying
to get displayed on a screen rather than downloading it as it was
intended.

Regarding rawrite, it's best to use it in as pure a DOS environment as
possible.  Also, if you uuse speech, kill it off as much as is practical
during the write operation. It seems to cause problems with some rawrite
operations.  Remember that the bios code that has to read these rawritten
disks is far less tollerant of imperfections than standard disk i/o code.

As far as downloading goes, it is strongly recommended that windows users
use an FTP client rather than internet explorer.  A number of people up
here got bad images and it turned out that they'd all used IE to get them.
I know it should be fine, but it often is not.

In a standard FTP client, it will be possible somewhere to select ASCII or
binary mode.  This of course will vary from client to client.  It is of
course essential that one uses binary mode for downloading disk images.

yes that's true but, if you enter the ftp address using the ftp://
prefix, then the problem of bad images isn't an issue.

I agree with this statement as well. Having said this however, I think
that as an ftp client, the 2 I've found most userfriendly under the
windows platform are cute ftp and ftp explorer.

downloading the slackware images I needed.

client but you do have a dosscreen reader then open a dos box and use the
indows ftp client which resembles a unix style client.  Make sure to type
bin though after loggin in because it's default is ascii.

Wht I'm suggesting is to use windows but open a dos client.  the ftp
client will work on the network, you dont' need dos drivers for it.
besides the ftp client will nt work in realdos mode.

The FTP client is a win32 console mode application which runs in a dos box.
It needs windows to be running and uses the windows networking setup.  You
will have no trouble using it on your LAN.

We have two problems which come up fairly often with new prospective
speakup users: Rawriting a bad disk because the users screen reader
got in the way; and not selecting the correct way to download in
Internet Explorer.

The first situation with rawrite is because rawrite.exe is a timing
based copy program and most screen readers use interrupts to assure
they get their fair share or more of the processor.  Usually all you
need do is quiet speech while the copy is taking place.

In the case of Internet Explorer, it assumes that all links are text
and thus replaces 0x0d characters with 0x0d0a.  In other words adding
an appropriate line feed.  Unfortunately, in the process of adding
line feeds to a binary program you really screw up the instruction
set.  So even if you rawrite the file correctly the downloading
process fucked up the image.

There is an option in I.E. under one of the menus, maybe file, which
will download the file without translating.  I do not use windows so I
can't tell you what the correct set of steps is for Internet
Explorer.  Hopefully, someone else here will volunteer that procedure.

If you have ie5.5, and you want to download any type of link,
just high-light the link, and right-click on it.
You'll get a menu.
One of the options in there will be something like
download link. Just select that, and you should be all set.

Actually, this will work for any version from 4.0 on. If they right click
they want to chose, "Save file as" option. This will save the file to
disk. The mode of transfer will depend on the link type and the header of
the file. If it appears to be a text file, it will be transfered in text
mode. This won't be good for a binary image.

The best bet will require maintnance in the event that download locations
change. The best thing is to give specific information on how to download
the information using the windows FTP client. That will involve issuing
the binaray command (which can be abbreviated to bin).

this is essentially true kirk. however, if you do as I mentioned in an
earlier posting and use the ftp prefix to connect to a server, you won't
get the problem of bad images.
for arguments sake, let's assume I want to get the checkout script from
the speakup ftp server. here's how I would approach it.
I would launch internet explorer, press ctrl+o for the open dialog then
enter in the following: ftp://linux-speakup.org/pub/speakup
the anonymous login and sending the email as a password is taken care of
by ie.
however, having said that, sometimes there is something wrong with the
initial transfer of data and I find that a backspace to the next directory
up usually solves the problem.

I downloaded and wrote a speakup bootdisk image to a disk, but when I go to
boot it, it doesn't even boot let alone talk.  Why?

hi,
i use both windows and linux. i install a different distro of linux on
average every couple of weeks on various of my and my friends computers. i
have always used internet explorer with jfw, and rawriting the disks while
occasinoally checking progress with jfw is fine. however, if i minimise the
dos box where rawrite is working makes rawrite stop responding. if i
maximise the window it continues and the disk is always fine. downloading
disks in internet explorer is also always fine. however, today i had to
download a 25 meg shell script, and internet explorer thought it was a text
file. so it tried to open it there and then, which froze my computer for
ages. the solution, and this may help in other cases, is to install
getright, and let it catch clicks in i e. then i uninstalled getright since
i don't like it!

Actually, Internet Explorer was correct about it being a text file. A
shell script is a text file. Just as a batch file in DOS world is a text
file.

Usually from what I know when folks use a browser to download files they
are automatically binary format.  If you use a windows ftp client such as
voyager, ftpx, ws_ftp, etc you can set biary or ascii mode by buttons on
the application.  Again, usually they are pre-defaulted to binary.

Hi

The problem is that not everyone knows what a ftp client is.  They think
that they can download files using Internet Explorer (IE) so that's all they
need to know.  It's IE that causes the problem most of the time and you
cannot tell IE that the file is binary and you wish to undertake a binary
transfer.

Doesn't InternetExplorer's notion of what's a binary file come from the info
for the file extension being downloaded? I know that windows stores a
command to be run whenever that file is acted upon in some way by the
windows shell (windows explorer). Along with the list of explorer actions
and associated commands, their is a field for associated mime type. So, if
something isn't being treated as binary when you think it should be, I'd
look at the file extensions dialog box in windows explorer usually accessed
by viewMenu\options.
