Setting the propaganda aside what kind of quality for cable modem 
downloaads is actually offered?  If the quality is less than effective 
what needs to be done by users to get it improved?

the quality of cable connections from what I've seen is pretty good. 
the speeds for downstream are for the post part quite nice. the only 
thing that could be improved is increasing the upstream by a little 
(certain isps only give 128k or less).

In the years I have been on cable, I've never gotten good upload speeds.
They don't want to encourage server usage on their systems so they block the
upload.  As far as neighbors, when comcast took over as our service
providor, and improved the network, I experienced a dramatic increase in the
quality of the connection no matter what the time of day or day of the week.
Any issues I now have with through put as far as download is concerned is
with slow or busy servers.  I have had some other issues, but they have been
attributable to a server being down or to a comcast outage.  I really hate
the 45k max uploads I get though and I also resent that I cannot use a
server on my pc and have it reached from the outside world.  This is
especially bad for things like streaming media which I have the power to do
but which does no good since no one can get to it because comcast blocks the
ports.

My ISP offers a speed test link on its web site so that
subscribers can test their transfer speeds. When downloading from
an arbitrary site, your observed speed will depend on the slowest
link in the path of hops between that site and your system, and
that is generally not known in advance.

With cable, your bandwidth is shared with a (hopefully) small
group of neighboring subscribers, and if all your neighboring
subscribers happen to be downloading at the same time, your
performance (and theirs) will suffer.

The only practical thing you can do that I know of is to shoot
your neighbors, but that is going to extremes.


I can generally count on download speeds of 125 k bytes per
second, and have seen as high as 250 k bytes per second, and as
low as 13 k bytes per second. The last figure was due to limited
upload bandwidth at the originating site. My upload speeds when
doing an FTP to my ISP runs from 15 to 25 k bytes per second. I

Just to add to this, I have gotten upward of 450kb/s but usually hang around
350kb/s for downloads and around 40 to 50 kb/s for upload. For upload, I
usually don't fluctuate that much, it's generally a steady 44 kb/s sometimes
higher, and rarely lower.

All of the above are in bytes and not bits.

ok guys just to put my 2 cents worth in here,
depending on the site, I can get download speeds oupwards of 800 kb/s 
that's kilobytes per second
I'm like most people are limited to 128 kbps kilobits per second which 
works out to aproximately 14-16 kb/s

i a as much an Optimum users, and this is sertain.  It is very node specific
about running servers.  Some nodes are crouded and you can't rn a server for
you life because they'll have your head.  Others, lik emyt, aren't crouded
at all.  I think because of this old cable modem, I'm limited to 6Mb/s
that's megabits, by 1 megabit up.

I sure wish that god-awful reply to field could be fixed on the list!
Most of the time I have to overtype the to field with my aliased
speakup entry to get rid of it.

For Cable speeds, I now can enjoy an average of around 350 KB per
second while downloading from ftp.kernel.org.  I used to only get at
most, half or a third as much until I replaced my hub and 486 based
router with a new router which has four switched ports on it.  My
uploads have consistantly been around 30 KBPS no matter what; pretty
steady.

I don't like the port blocking that Cox does but I can get around
quite a few of them by using non-standard ports; they mainly block web
(80) and SMTP (25).  I think they bock FTP and telnet but I don't do
telnet at all and SSH works fine but since I use a router, I split off
my SSH to several different machines by using other ports.  I also use
a non standard port to access my web server privately.  All and all,
it works and is the only high speed internet option available to me in
my neighborhood.  I could have stayed with Sprint Broadband but I
think Cox is faster now then they were and certainly my upload speeds
are better.

Too bad I can't afford a T1 line <sigh>.
