As a suggestion, you may want to add a section on yum into your how-to. 

If you don't know yum, it is an easy-to-use command-line-based
application that does an excellent job of managing your rpms. Yum is
also very useful for doing such system activities as: 
Installing applications.
Removing applications.
Keeping your system up-to-date.
Doing system upgrades.
The overall advantage to yum is that it takes away all the guess work
when it comes to dependencies.

that you maybe able to use / modify for the speakup community.

simple question really.  but I don't have the answer.  for installing the
kurnel I type the line
rpm -i kernel-2.4.22-2.nptlspk2.i686.rpm
and hit enter but I get an error message. any ideas why?
I've tried using the fool path as well with no change.

upgrading the kernal

hello again
i've tried reading the howto at
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-7.3-Manual/custom-guide/s1-kernel-perform-upgrade.html
with no success.  note that link will bring you about three pages into the
howto but that's where I got the commands
rpm -uvh kernal name where kernel name was the file name.

I'm getting an error about a bad tag or something.

That's a HOWTO for Red Hat 7.3, which is woefully old news. Actually,
the particulars may not be that different, but it's generally best to be
as up to date as reasonably possible. Suggest following the 9.0 HOWTO's
until Fedora's are out.

The rpm command is fine. But, where did you get the kernel, and what's
it's name, exactly?

What error? And where, exactly, did this kernel come from? I'm asking
for the specifics as this same kernel name will show up in several
directories--dfor the reason that it's to be matched to the installed
system.

You can't mix. You have to match.

Hello again,
well I eventually got it installed by typing rpm --force.
I found modules for all the other synths but the apolo and I then found the
C code for it.  I've checked the apolo module and am now recompiling the
kernel.  after this, assuming there are no errors I'll try to use make
install then modprobe speakup_apolo

The speakup I'm using is 2.0 from cvs.

I got it from:
ftp.linux-speakup.org/pub/speakup/disks/fedora/1/kernel-2.4.22-2.nptlspk2.i6
86.rpm

This matches the kernel information on the log in screen.

I had always thought that the line for starting speakup was
speakup_synth=APOLO when did this change or am I just messed up from all
this typing.

I have a feeling that I'm going to be undoing everything that I've done when
someone tells me there is a much easier way.

Oh, I got it back to run level 3 as well.  yay!

haha.

Oh the reason that the kernel wouldn't install is I forgot to change from
text to binary when copying it from my computer to the linux machine.  when
I tried to install it I was told that i was already there.  I used
the --force arguement to try it any way.

has helped me this far.  hmm, hopefully it compiles without errors now!

Can any one tell me how to get started with Gnopernicus?  I'm not going to
get to it until the weekend but while I'm waiting on things to lode I would
like to be reading up on it so I have an idea what to expect.

FreeTTS sounds decent enough, imho. However, it can be a bit of a cludge
to get it installed and correctly configured.

Yes, I was refairing to Mozilla but, I couldn't think of the name.  I'll
probably get comfortable with the basics for a while before trying any
of that.

Does any one know what freetts is like with gnopernicus?  I don't think
its usable with speakup yet is it?

Until we get the new installation HOWTO up, you may as well study the
current HOWTO for Red Hat 9. It's going to be very nearly the same:

If your LinkSys is serving up ip addresses, Linux can certainly accept

I would wager networking works far more easily and reliably on Linux--at
least in my experience.

I've being waiting for the release of Fedora 1.0 since early October as
I was told by numerous people that it would have gnopernicus pree
configured.  Now that the speakup modified version is up I'm just dying
to download it and have a good root around.  

However, I'm going to try to do the sensible thing first and spend the
first few days reading up on installation howtos and FAQ's.  Can any one
suggest a few?

I'm hoping to set up the following:
Fedora 1.0 with speakup.
Gnome with the Gnopernicus screen reader.
Some of the Gnopernicus supported applications.
Emacspeak
W3.
Vm.
