As part of your install, did you do the step that has you run mkinitrd?
If not, you will need to do this.
The steps on how to do this are explained in the howto, but I ask
because you didn't mention it in your note.

Yes, I did it. Apollo starts talking when linux boots.
The only problem is when I load network service in interactive startup
apollo stops talking. For example: when I'm writting root and the password
it stops talking, or after login. When I don't start this service, it goes
well.
As I said, I have a usb modem. I'm thinking on this problem... Is it
possible that speakup stops talking due to a failure of detecting modem?
My modem is a
Motorola SurfBoard 4200 USB Cable Modem.
How do I see if my modem is detected? And if system don't detect it what can
I do?
I'm confused with this situation.

Best regards,

Sérgio Neves

Bill and I are wondering whether it's some kind of IRQ problem. That
would be unfortunate because it can be a bit difficult to clean IRQ
issues up.

Have you said "no" to networking?

By the way, once you're booted you can try various things until you find
exactly what service is killing your speech. For instance:

service network start

starts networking, and

service network stop

stops it. Yes there's also a

service network restart

Each /etc/init.d/ service can be managed this way in Fedora, and the:

chkconfig

command helps you make various service settings permanent between boots.

Yes, I've already defined the line in this way. It seems the problem is on
network service, but I don't understand. Can anybody give other suggestions?

I am not sure if this is the exact problem or not but make sure the run
level is set to 3 in
/etc/inittab
the line should look like the following
id:3:initdefault:

I changed linux system boot to text mode with the command

I thinnk, with my poor knowledge, that it is very strange, but maybe the
network service causes a conflict, i imagine.

When I started network service, it says that one cable is disconnected and
 to verify it.
I have internet by usb modem, and I have one network card that I use in

is not connected to laptop at the moment.

Can anybody help me? What's the fuction of network service? And which could

Other question: what is the easiest way to see if my sound card is working
