Hi,

People I've spoken to who use Gnome regularly seem to recommend running
Debian unstable so as to keep up with Gnome development. Of course this is
not for everyone, but I'm told that now with the existance of Debian
Experimental, Unstable is more stable than it used to be.

Geoff.

You could look at Ubuntu Hardy. It appears that Ubuntu Hardy has 2.22
packages. You could pull them in that way by adding a Ubuntu mirror to
/etc/apt/sources.list. I don't know what differences there are between
their packages and Debian. You might have to set up apt pinning to pull
in the newer Ubuntu versions. The 2.22 packages might not be 100%
complete, but I saw a newer version of Orca than what Debian offered.
If in doubt, check a Ubuntu mirror in /pool/universe/g/gnome* or
http://archive.ubuntu.com/

Hi,

All I know is that I'm pulling in both Debian unstable and Ubuntu Hardy
and apt-cache madison gnome-orca shows that Ubuntu is newer. Then
again, I'm not one to say much because I never got my instllation of
Gnome to work. <grin> I was surprised that apparently Ubuntu was
newer. Yes, I do update my package lists fairly often. I don't know if
anything else is newer but it looked like Orca had a higher version number.

Hi Geoff,
If i want to run debian unstable, do I just need to add that to my /etc/apt/sources.list file if I am using Lenny right now?
Many thanks,
Christian

Hi,

You'll want to change all references to leny or testing in your
sources.list file to point to syd or unstable, then run:

apt-get update

Make sure there aren't any errors, then run:

apt-get dist-upgrade

This may take awhile.

Hopefully everything will upgrade smoothly.

Geoff.

Hi,

Syd is unstable. Unlike the other releases which change name all the time
as each release comes out, unstable is always called Syd. Debian releases
are named after characters in the Toy Story movies and Syd was particularly
unstable.

Geoff.
