Hello, That dtk-generic.conf file is the one I was meaning to modify. This file uses the generic system for speech-dispatcher. This file points the generic interface for speech-dispatcher to the dectalk binary, and defines the parameters for voice, rate, etc. to modify this change the dectalk binary to the cepstral one (I think it is swift you would use here), and alter the parameters to match those for cepstral. This includes altering the conversion from the speech-dispatcher values to something suitable for cepstral. As I have mentioned this file seems to be well commented, and if I was to sit down and do it, the time would probably be taken up more by gathering the information for cepstral and entering it into the file than understanding the file. this is just a configuration file, not a C or C++ program. You will need to point it at the swift binary, you probably will want to setup the values for rate, pitch, volume and remove any references to parameters not used from the line that states the command to be issued, e.g. you will not want the parameter for voice on that line. There may be other lines you need to alter, I don't know how dectalk refers to rate, but cepstral does it in words per minute, so you may want to change the lines related to the conversion from speech-dispatcher values to synth values. I cannot say more than this without trying to do it myself. Hi, I just install the hole distro again sarge. Install speech
dispatcher install festival installed the dectalk 5.0 software. Still
the same problem with a fresh installed changed nothing but the default
module from flite to dtk-generic
Still no dice. Could my problem be that I am running an on board sound
card? The say -a command works for the dectalk festival shows it is
working using it's test command. Flite works both ways. Using its own
test and using spd-say.

Ok hi, here is another fun one for you all. DefaultModule dtk-generic All other out put modules are remarked out. And guess what I have to issue the command like this to get speech from the dectalk Spd-say -o dtk-generic "dectalk software 5.0 is running. Using the pall voice." it accepts all my default pitchis rate etc. But I still have to force the output module. Thanks. Jim, Your problem with speechdispatcher has been caused by your execution path being incompletely set at the time you invoked it. Typically, the directory /usr/local/bin is not added to the execution path until a login is completed. That means that your bootup scripts will never look there for things they need, unless specifically asked to. If you run speechdispatcher from within a bootup script, such as /etc/rc.d/rc.local, it will appear to run okay, but will not have the foggiest idea where to find the "say" command that has been put in /usr/local/bin. There are two solutions: 1. The poor one: Modify your configuration file to add the exact path to the "say" command where it is invoked. You did that, it worked, hurray! but 2: The better one: Add the /usr/local/bin directory to the execution path just before the speechdispatcher program is invoked, like this: export PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH nice -n -5 speechdispatcher That will also work, and will allow you to use the speechdispatcher dtk-generic.conf file without doctoring it up. It makes upgrading easier in the future. But both methods work fine. Chuck BTW: You can obtain a script called "speakwith" that allows you to change synthesizers on the fly by typing as root such commands as these: speakwith sftsyn speakwith ltlk speakwith bns and so on. The script explains about the path problem in comment statements. There are precious few issues on LInux that would be helped by a complete reinstall. I think you bring this approach with you from another OS you've been using in the past? As for sound cards, there's far too much variety in them, and far too much still unsettled around how they're managed in software to make it easy to resolve these kinds of issues. Yes spd-say is the command to use to send text threw speech-dispatcher. Say -a " " is the command to use to send text to the dectalk and is how speech-dispatcher sennds commands to it. Flite and festival have there own commands also. You can address any loaded modual threw speech-dispatcher like this spd-say -o flite "testing again" replace "testing again" with what ever text you want speech-dispatcher to send to the requested software module. Remember you can only send out put to modules that you have loaded. In the speech-dispatcher configuration file.
