I don't know. But it's safe enough to just load PC1 drivers, and if they 
don't work, try PC2.

except that when one gets those the .exec file states it is a windows self 
extract..why?

when I downloaded the file and tried to execute it I got the message, this 
is  a windowes executable file.

I think you're supposed to extract it in DOS.

Profound apologies...its been a deeply stressful time.
When I ran pkunzip it opened just fine.
I do have a question though.
I note no install, does that mean I need only say  run dt.bat for the 
drivers to run?
i. e. place that in my autoexec.bat?
I want to test things before doing that  if I can.
Goal is running it with business vision.

No problem :)

I'm not too sure, I haven't tried or tested this or have the hardware.

I would guess you need to run dt.bat to run the drivers unless it's an
installer that sets up things in CONFIG.SYS.

Which file did you download?

If I remember correctly, and this was a long time ago, you simply have 
to run the batch file, then whatever screen reader you plan to use. The 
batch file loads a large amount of software onto the card, and runs it.

If you're planning to use this under Linux as well, I would be 
astonished if it were supported by modern kernels. In fact, I don't know 
whether Linux still runs on x86 machines with ISA slots.

After all, for many the major major major drawback for Linux is the lack

You're welcome. I also have a doubletalk LT / litetalk, which works
beautifully on a standard serial port, and well enough over a USB to
serial converter. I checked a couple of weeks ago out of interest, and
the RC systems page for the lt says they don't have any in stock, and
that it's retired. I seem to recall hearing the trippletalk is not
being sold anymore either. Hardware synthesizers seem to have become a
chapter in speech synthesis history. Let's keep the ones still working
we own running for as long as we can. It seems that once they break
down, they likely can't be fixed and certainly not replaced.

Its interesting,
I have owned a reading edge since 1993  / 94 or so.
In that time I have needed to replace it only twice, perhaps on 3 
occasions, once because a staffer with delta airlines ignored my 
instructions  for  its storage.
I do keep a spare,  would not mind having one of them  passed on for parts 
to help someone else.
speaking personally, hardware synthesizers have become  apart of history 
largely because of factors outside of their benefit quality, or possible 
continued usefulness... but that is my personal opinion of course.

1. Linux does not support the reading edge.
2. you use your computer, and I will use mine.
To be forthright, assuming I ever find a voiceover voice that does not 
trigger a brain incident,  apple would be my choice over Linux.

Hi folks,
Jason, I have yet to find a reading edge driver for Linux, that alone 
keeps me  from seriously considering the operating system.
It would run on DOS which is what I use.
For now though, as I cannot tell what the sound issue might be, this 
project will wait.
Indeed though  all the screen readers I have checked, still need to try 
ASAP run the .bat file as it were, all finding the  card too.
At the moment my main source of synthesis is doing better, what a 
difference changing a cable can make!

Whenever you return to the problem, try testing the DECtalk card with 
one of the demonstration programs included with the software (after all 
of the necessary software is loaded onto the card by running the batch 
file).
