Hi.
I am trying to get zinf to run under slackware 9.0,
kernel v2.4.20.
I first tried to use the alsa drivers for my
sound card, a pci128.
I got the alsa drivers, libs and utils installed.
I was able to use aplay to play a wave file.
I then installed zinf.
when I ran zinf, I got a message tht
alsa-pcm-hw device was busy.
I then uninstalled alsa and zinf,
installed sound modules in the kernel,
and again, I was able to get a wave file to play.
when I ran zinf, i got absolutely no sound,
except a runbleing sound if i turned the speaker volume
up all the way.
I tried adjusting the volumes on the sound card with
a program called mixer.
no help.
I then downloaded the oss package from opensound and installed it
as a demo.
again, a wave file pays fine, and zinf
doesn't.
I am trying to get zinf-2.2.3 to operate correctly.
any help would be appricated.

I'm not using the most current version of zinf right now but recall
adding the alsa configuration option when compiling it. do a
./configure --help to find the exact option. I recall that fixing it
for me after installing ALSA. But than again, I don't recall ever
getting any errors about a sound device being busy either.

When I did compile zinf, it detected that I had alsa installed correctly.
If I could get zinf to work with a plain sound card driver, such as that
in the kernel, then I would go back to figure out why it
doesn't work with alsa, but I can't get any
sound from zinf even with kernel sound drivers.

x11 works far better on linux than sound. I gave up on zinf, and
information that shows it doesn't work with oss or alsa is adequate
vindication for this decision.

I cannot speak to the alsa driver working or not working but decided
to get to the bottom of the no sound problem in zinf. The bug reports
filed with debian and the zinf web site are less than helpful.
So the answer is easy and absolutely not obvious, in the preferences
file in the .zinf directory of your home directory there is a variable
softmix. It is set to true by default. Setting softmix to false will
clear up the zinf non-sound problem.
How I finally discovered the answer is a long story but it involved
compiling and debugging and other usual bug hunting bullshit. All
that for a nice simple little fix.

I wouldn't unless you're already familiar with Pine. If you've not used
Pine, just skip it and go straight to mutt.
