I've had several people ask me if speakup will work with usb to serial converters. Since I don't exactly know the answer to this, i figured I would ask here.
If it does not work with theese devices, would there be a way to get it to work with them? The reason I ask is because a lot of the laptops I'm seeing lately are removing serial ports from their laptops, or the price for a laptop with a serial port is insanely high, and by that I mean around $1600 to $1800. For some people that's not a bad price, but when you compaire it to 800 for simple small laptops, that's expensive.
If someone could give me feedback on this, I would greatly appreciate it.. Thanks!

I cannot see how speakup could work with a USB to serial converter
unless the USB port happened to be exactly what a standard uart
provided in exactly the same place. In other words, no.

Hmm, this is going to rule out being able to use speakup on most of the low priced laptops soon. Del has dropped all serial ports on their laptops, and gateway is right behind them. As near as I can tell, pretty much all of the newer macs also do not have that serial support.
The only way I can see around that problem is have a sited person go through the install, and then use software speech with speakup. Does anyone have any ideas here?
My main reasoning behind asking theese questions is that the state wants to replace my laptop when I go back to school... They get some sort of deal through del, so that's who they go with. Unfortunately the machine won't have a serial port...

Argue that the serial port is an accomodation to your disability under
Secs 504 and 508. You can tell them that Windows does not afford you
equal access or facilitation because it is not text based, breaks, and
is not fully accessible.

I tried seeing if gateway would sell me a laptop with a serial port, their response was "sure, for $2000." Basically what I'm noticing is that the state is buying laptops for $700, which is cheap, and so they won't cough up another $1300 for one with a serial port reguardless of wether I need it or not.Since this is something I would use for school, I can't argue the linux thing too well either since I'm going to need ie for most of the student login sites for classes, and I'll need word for writing papers and several other things along those lines. Linux works perfectly for me for almost everything, but those are the two things that it does not do well, and I guess since the state is paying for all of this I can't argue it too much, though I'd still like to make it a duel boot system:p but I can't really do that with no serial port, heh
Oh well, I'm done ranting:)

I'll bet that soon enough there will be some company making Linux drivers
for their USB to serial adapters.
Glenn.
