Hi, you will need to modify your /etc/grub.conf. As an example I will
place my grub.conf in this message for example perposes.
Hope this helps. What you will see is a speakup startup followed by an
normal startup without speakup for cases when speakup is not desirible
such as using my Dectalk express with emacspeak or testing the
gnome-speech
dectalk driver, etc.

I installed Red Hat 8 and the default boot loader was grub.
The Howto tells where and how to add a line to activate
speakup on bootup.
Can someone tell me or point me to instructions on how to do
this with grub.
Thanks
Ron

You should have a line that looks something like
kernel = /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-18.9.x ro root=/dev/hda1
at the end of that kernel line you put
speakup_synth=whatever
where whatever is the keyword for your hardware synth.
(you will have to edit more than one kernel line if you have more than one kernel installed, obviously.)
Regards
Aaron
