Hi All,
I decided to try this soundcard thing again. I had some sited assistance
read me some info off of the card. It's an isa soundblaster 16 non-pnp,
dated 1993 (?). I have no idea what irq it uses. Does anyone know how I
can find out what irq it is using? Or how can I specify the irq on the
command line when loading the module? I think the reason it dant find the
card is that it doesn't know what resources it's using.
Any help would be greatly apreciated!

It has default parameters on it and may come up working. No, because the OSS drivers are already loaded. Test the card after detection. Slackware has a mixer program called rexima which is very easy to use. Just type rexima and use the numeric keypad 8 (say current line) key to find out what values are set for volume, microphone, etc. Adjust the volume and microphone to some reasonable value and try out the command-line play and record utilities. You select what you want to adjust with the up/down arrow keys and the left/right arrow keys change values. Pressing space on the microphone or line toggles whether you can record from it or not. Press "q" when done adjusting mixer values. Try "play somefile.wav" and "rec somefile.wav." Substitute some other filenames. If you can play and record sounds, the IRQ and address are right. You'll have to comment out that line again in order to load the Alsa drivers. I've never used a non-PNP card, so I'm not familiar with how to pass options to Alsa, but you'll need to get the Alsa drivers to use the same IRQ and base address that the OSS ones did. Then build alsa drivers, libs and utils against those kernel sources. Your modules then should be in the directory: /lib/modules/kernel.version.number/kernel/sound For example, my SB Live card, which is a pci card, has one of its modules at: /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1.o This is using version 0.9.0beta12 of alsa, so this may vary, but I thik this is the location for the later versions of alsa, though I think the path you gave sounds right for 0.5.12A which I think you said you were using. In addition, make sure that *all* of the oss modules are gone before you try using the alsa driver modules. Just make sure that the OSS drivers for your soundcard aren't *loaded* before trying to load the ALSA drivers. If your OSS drivers are built right into the kernel, I don't know of a way around re-compiling your kernel. I'm starting to think I need to recompile. How do I go about doing this? Then unload any oss modules you have loaded, assuming you have no oss modules in the kernel. In your case, check the bare.i image by mounting it as a loopback filesystem. You do this by mount -o loop bare.i /mnt. May you code in the power of the source, may the kernel, libraries, and utilities be with you, throughout all distributions until the end of the epoch. It runs under DOS, and it's in the drivers for DOS and win 3.1 package. If you can't find it, or just don't want to bother trying, let me know, and I'll send you the diagnose.exe program itself. If you have a modern system with PCI slots you need to tell the bios to allocate irq5 to legacy isa so that it will show on the isa bus otherwise Linux may never see the interrupts from the card. It is also possible that y ou can configure this with the pci routing subsystem in 2.4.x and bypass the bios altogether but it is recommended you use the bios. non-plug 'n' play cards software set the resources; the defaults for an sb16 are i/o port 0x220 irq 5 dma1=1 and dma2=5 Check the modules documentation you need to edit /etc/modules.conf and put in a line like options sb16 io=0x220 irq=5 dma1=1 dma2=5 then modprobe sb16. If you run redhat there is a sndconfig util you can run; not sure about slackware etc. Does the box also run windows? What are the resource settings there? Regards, Kerry.
