I think this is a bug, or well it looks like it at any rate. we recompiled
my kernel to the 2.4.18 version, and when I reboot, it basically gets
stuck when I hit the keypad ins and enter to stop it from talking so that
I don't have to listen to everything load I usually do this right away and
it gets stuck, but if I wait a few seconds, and then do it it doesn't get
stuck.

I hope that this makes sense, but it's the only way I can explain it. if
you've got any questions then ask.

By the way, I did use the checkout script to get the latest version of
speakup, and I still get the same results.

Hi Debra. It could be a bug in the latest cvs sources. I don't have them,
so unfortunately I can't tell you whether or not I have the same problem.

it's worked fine up till this kernel. so I'm wondering if there is just
something it doesn't like or what. but like i said. it only does this when
i try to shut it up right away, but if I give it a minute, and then shut
it up it loads fine.

Hi all.
Actually, if you just don't want to have to listen to all the boot stuff, just
hitting the enter on the keypad should suffice. Hitting insert and enter
actually turns speakup off, and then you have to hit insert and enter again to
turn it back on.
Maybe you already knew this, but from what you said I thought I should mention
it.
I am using the 2.4.18 kernel with speakup and have had no problems, but maybe
speakup has been updated in cvs since I compiled.

NO! NO! NO!
This is wrong. and I'll tell you why. the insert anter key just stops
speakup from automatically reading the screen everytime it gets updated.
to turn speakup off the keystroke is printscreen.

I don't know about that; when I use speakup with doubletalk, if I do
insert/enter it says "you turned me off" and when I hit it again it says "Hey,
that's better."

The Print Screen key does Kill speakup all together. If you use the
Insert+Enter key and hear the you turned me off message then use any of
the reading keys on the keypad, speakup still will read the contents on
the screen using those keys.

Cheryl:

Yes, it says "turned me off", but you haven't really turned him off.
As others have said, try any of the review keys when he's "turned off"
in this way. You'll be pleasantly surprised. I've come to like this
"quiet" mode; Sometimes, Speakup can be just too chatty without it.

Hi Dave!
Yes, I already knew the review mode still worked. My original point was that,
unless this has changed, you can stop doubletalk from talking just during
boot-up by hitting the enter key on the numeric keypad.
I didn't know about the printscreen usage, so I learned my new thing for the
day.

You know, I learned that same new thing for yesterday. Now, if only I
could learn something new today? There's still about 5 hours left.

Yes, but with insert/enter, you still have access to screen review
functions.
