Copying audio cds

Is there any way to copy the whole audio cd you want to make a copy of, or do
you have to make individual files of each track and then use cdrecord to put
them on the cdrom?

Hi Cheryl. If you want to do Cd-to-Cd copying, you can use cdrdao to do
this. Is it cd-to-cd copying that you are after?

Hi, Ann,

     Could you please supply a bit more information about the  
abcde  program which I've never seen mentioned on this list 
before?  From where precisely can I download it and what in 
general are its capabilities?  Does it both rip files and record 
them?

     Since  cdrecord  does not create acceptable music CDs and 
since the person helping me was not able to get  cdrdao  to work 
on my machine, (my CD reader is ide, not scsi)  I am extremely 
frustrated watching friends using Windows do what I haven't 
managed to do.  I'm hoping this program may be the answer for me.

Hi pat.
Although your cdrw is ide, not scsi, you can convert it to be seen as scsi by
implementing scsi emulation in your kernel. This does involve you or somebody
recompiling your kernel and there are several options that need to be compiled
in to make this work. try looking at www.linuxdoc.org; hit enter on "howtos" and
that should put you right at "howto indec" or something like that. Enter on that
and there will be a list of categories; enter on the one for cdroms and you will
see both a cdrw and cdrom howto. The cdrw howto could in my opinon be better,
but it does tell you what needs to be implemented in your kernel for your cdrw
to be seen as scsi by programs that need that.
If you have trouble with this let me know, and I will try to write a more
detailed response later.

     Pat is using the stock RedHat kernel with Speakup added.  She already 
has all the modules that she needs.  In fact, her burner is also IDE and 
 is using the IDE SCSI emulation.  The problem is that both drives are on 
the same controller.  I think that's likely to cause problems with 
on-the-fly copying.  Since Pat's determined to do this rather than copying 
the data to the HDD first, does anyone know the syntax for setting hdc 
and hdd to use ide-scsi.

Why do that.  Copy to the hard drive first, then burn as many copies
as you want.  When you're done with the files, delete 'em.

It is also worthwhile to note that when doing an on the fly copy,
the cdparanoia library has less time to correct for jitter and if the
buffers empty out whilst copying and no burnproof is available you get a frisby.
Of course even with burnproof you still get small dropouts that should not cause
problems but sometimes do.
The Nero docs say that on the fly copying is not recommended because the
audio can not be corrected sufficiently to garantee a good copy at all times.
dust or dirt on the cd will cause a crash that will generate a frisby.
For this reason make sure you have 800 megs free and use a little
temp disk space since space is cheap and the copys are better.

I have tried using ide-scsi with two cdr drives via settings in 
lilo.conf. It was not successful. I would get hard hangs. 
Of course, my experience may not be yours. In my case, the burner was 
directly in my portable computer, while the second cdr was in the docking 
station.

Hi Pat,

Hmmmmm, I think it does what you want it to do.  You'd have to look in
its docs to see just exactly what it does.  CDrecord works pretty well
for me.  But I run scripts that set the bit rate and so on.

Abcde does a good job as far as I know.  I haven't tried it yet.  It's
available as a Debian package I know.  Dunnow about RH or other
distros.

abcde rips the cd and makes a file of each track, either ogg or mp3, but it
doesn't record to your cdrw for you.

In order to make cdrdao work with ide cdrom drives
it is just a matter of doing the following:
Enable scsi generic, scsi cdrom and ide-scsi emulation.
compile out support for ide-cdrom, your ide-cdrom will show as scsi.
Boot your new kernel. If you load ide-cdrom support as modules
you can tell kmod which support to load for which device but this is not
trivial.

I use ide cdrom drives to rip audio with cdrdao and it preserves indexx
isrc catalog number and pregaps.

You can make cdrecord generate acceptable music cds without 2-second pregaps, simply
use the -dao option like this:
cdrecord -v -audio -dao speed=n 1.wav 2.wav
Note however that if the audio data in the .wav file is not a multiple of 2352
bytes you need the -pad option and this will insert zeros as padding.
to avoid this rip with cdparanoia which does pad the tracks or
get cdrdao to work. It works just fine for me here on both ide and scsi devices.
Note that once you enable ide-scsi emulation your cdrom will move from /dev/hdc to /dev/scd0 so remember to update fstab.

Speaking of abcde, I am having another problem there as explained in the note
below. I already sent this to debian but the only reply I got was somebody else
who is having the same problem both on debian and redhat.
Oh, also, when I try to use the -o switch with abcde (for mp3 output instead of
ogg) I get this message (both as a user and as root):

abcde error:  id3v2 is not in your path.
As you'll se below, I can run abcde (and cdparanoia where the actual problem
seems to show up) just fine as root as long as I settle for ogg output or
actually cdparanoia works fine and gives me a .wav output.

this is some kind of permissions problem, but I can't seem to find the source of
it.
/dev/cdrom is the symlink to /dev/scd1 and /dev/cdrecord is the symlink to
/dev/scd0. I am also a member of the cdrom group. I didn't have any trouble with
these programs before converting to scsi.
Can anybody see what I need to change here?

You also need scsi generic support loaded, cdparanoia
will send requests both to /dev/scd0 and /dev/sg0 so
also make sure you do
cd /dev
./MAKEDEV sg

I wrote some messages on this program a couple of weeks ago to this list so drop me a lne if you
want me to send them to you off-list they talk about how to use cdrdao, why you'd want
to use it, (copying all index marks and pregaps etc)
and other things.
