I have found it difficult to use speakup in an editor such as Vim. Is
there a better editor to use, or, are there some speakup key strokes that
would make it go more smoothly.

Hi, Emacs is the best choice here. Especially, if you toss in Emacspeak to
for speech output.

I use 'nano' with pretty good success as far as cursor tracking
with speakup goes. If you know your physics, nano is like pico
only more so. It tracks the cursor better than pico and offers
other extra features too.

Hi all,
Have to agree on the Emacs choice, however, I have to say here and
now, that I really, really, really appreciate the cut and paste
feature of speakup! I discovered yesterday, that I can cut from a
speakup console to one running emacs. I'm frankly delighted!

Yes, Ann, I second this. The speakup clipboard is absolutely wonderful.
Not only can you copy to another console, if you've logged into another
computer, over ssh, for example, you can clipboard across country! <grin>

Hi Charles. Where can I download Nano. I have heard of it, but never
knew where to get it.
Thanks.

Hi Dan,
The URL for nano is:
http://www.nano-editor.org
The cursor tracking is not as good as emacs, but if your editing
needs are modest, this is one you can live with pretty well. It
has search and replace, regular expressions, and the cursor
tracking works when moving left and right but not yet when moving
up and down. In pico it does not work in either direction, so I
guess that means nano is half way there. Interesting that there
is so much variation among the different editors as far as the
speakup cursor tracking behavior is concerned.

Hi,
Assuming you're using the Speakup keymap, try turning on the
"cursoring" toggle, once you've entered vim's "insert" mode. I think
you'll find that it tracks your movements quite well. To get output
reliably spoken from the shell, turn off the toggle.

Hi Chuck. Well I just installed it, and what pleases me most is that
backspace works, more or less. One of the things I find most welcome
when writing mail. I don't consider myself a *good* typist, but if I
make a mistake, I don't want to be floundering around to ffind it, let
alone fix it.
thanks.
