Hi All,

Now that I have the Linux box up and running on the router, I visited
Hellas BBS through telnet and experienced once again the good old bulletin
board days. If you open www.hellasbbs.com or was it Net, but I think .com,
you'll get a shot at playing all those text based BBS games like Barren
Realms. It was cool!

Hello listers.
Is it possible to use Workbone with speakup? I can play 1 track at a
time, but the interactive interface seems to give fits because of the
number pad and Speakup's reliance on it.
Is there another utility out there that works better?
Thanks.

Dan -
If you use the number keys at the top of your qwerty keyboard
they will perform just as the numeric keypad numbers are supposed
to. However, there is a better utility, IMHO, at:

http://jac.sourceforge.net

It is a great little utility.

Here's a totally uneducated and uninformed guess, since I haven't started
using SpeakUp yet.

Can't you just turn off the NumLock to access the numPad numbers?

Sorry for the dumb question.

Nope, it does not work like that. The numlock key says "numlock
on" and "numlock off" but it does not change any of the functions
of the keypad keys.

Chuck,

Do you by any chance have a slackware package of jac or do you know if there are any out there that are relatively recent?
I'm asking because I had trouble building cdcd from sources, which makes me wery of cd playing programs.

Greg -
The package on sourceforge is a source package, distribution
independent; you just compile it and install it and away you go.
Let me know if you want me to send it to you.

Hi, workbone works great with speakup. Just use the number keys a above
the letter keys. I believe to play an entire cd just press number seven on
the number row above the letter keys.

I configured, compiled, and installed it yesterday without any hitches so
far. I know what you mean about some of those packages though. I recall
a while back having to upgrade my readline library from gnu sources in
order for libcdaudio to work in order for cdcd to work, if you know what I
mean. And this is with a slackware 8.0 settup.

Yeah, I know what you mean with the same setup.
Fortunately, I downloaded jac yesterday, and it works nicely.

Workbone lets you use the qwerty numbers as equivalent to the keypad
numbers.

I don't know what distribution you're using but cdcd is available as a
debian package, only I'm not sure if it's the latest available version or
not. My only other recommendation would be to do a search with google or
whatever search engine you like best.

Depending on what you want to do, you do have several choices for a cd
player. There is workbone (which I haven't used but with which I'm going
to experiment), cdcd (I have used and like it), cda (packaged with xmcd
but does not require xwindows, only there are some things you can't do in
cda that can only be done with xmcd; basically functional though). What I
do like about cda is that
you can access the cddb database which you can no longer do with cdcd; I
know there is some controbersy about whether to use cddb because of their
policies but am just giving you your options. Then, in searching debian
packages, I also found dcd (Dave's cd player) which is supposed to be a
simple command-line player which can also be used as an alarm clock. With
some of these packages, cdtool was also mentioned as a good support to
have. Sorry I can't give more concrete information but I'm just
experimenting myself. You probably already know about options for ripping
and creating mp3 files, and this is slightly off of the subject of your
question. However, I have been wanting to ask about "abcde". I use it
when I want to make mp3s of a whole cd and like it; my only problem is
that it uses wget to go out to the cd database and download the
information for the cd which it then uses to create the titles in the
directory. Of course cddb is now spitting out wget with "unauthorized
client" so I end up having to fill in the template for the cd myself. Has
anybody found a legal work-around for this problem. I was thinking that
if I could get the abcde program to access the information from my
database from the cda package, this would be a solution, but I don't know
how complicated that would be.

                              Cheryl

cdcd is available as a Debian package. If you don't run Debian, you
can still get the source out of the Debian distribution. Here is the
URL:

ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/stable/main/source/sound/cdcd_0.5.8.orig.tar.gz

Actually, I went to that site, and either the program is not on the server, or the server doesn't exist. I've tried every download link there. Can I get the current version from anywhere else? Thanks.

Hey Greg,

I haven't tried workbone, but if you want a command-line CD player, I
recommend cdcd (at http://cdcd.undergrid.net/). You run it entirely
with commands from the command line. So instead of pressing keys on
the keypad, you type commands like these:

"cdcd play": Play first track or resume the current track if paused.
"cdcd play 9": Play track 9.
"cdcd next": Skip to the next track.
"cdcd prev": Go back one track.
"cdcd pause": Pause the player.
"cdcd stop": Stop the player.
"cdcd tracks": Look up CD and track info in an online CD database.

I use it mostly to listen to a CD or check the CD info before adding
the tracks I like into the music collection on my hard disk.

Hi All,

How does one use workbone with a speakup key map installed? Thanks.
Greg
