Hi, I think everyone may be interested in this new os which will help out
programmers and businesses alike.
See below.
MICHAEL ROBERTSON, CEO OF LINDOWS.COM, TO OFFER A PC OPERATING SYSTEM TO RUN
BOTH LINUX® AND WINDOWS® SOFTWARE
LindowsOST Preview Release In 4th Quarter To Give Consumers New Choice
SAN DIEGO -- October 23, 2001--
Lindows.com,
a company committed to bringing choice to computers, is gearing up to
deliver LindowsOS Preview Release, a modern and affordable operating system
for Pentium
based computers. Because of its unique ability to run Linux® software titles
as well as many popular Windows® (Nasdaq "MSFT") software titles, computer
owners and organizations of all sizes will soon have an option for their new
computers. LindowsOS is also ideal for computer users seeking to upgrade to
a stable, full featured, operating system.
For under $100, users can purchase a copy of LindowsOS to run their PC. The
simplified interface makes installation a straightforward, four-step process
suitable for the novice or the MIS manager supervising a number of
computers. LindowsOS also allows users the convenience of running LindowsOS
on one or
more systems, for personal use, without the hassle of serial code
registrations. Users will receive the full version upon purchase, without
having to call-in
their registration numbers.
Once installed, LindowsOS offers a full-powered graphical desktop experience
familiar to any computer user, but with advanced underlying architecture to
ensure greater reliability.
PCs running LindowsOS have the unique ability to run Linux® and Windows®
software. No additional software is required for owners of LindowsOS to run
popular
Windows® or Linux® programs.
To install Windows® software, users insert CDs or download the software and
run the accompanying installer program with no modifications required. Once
installed, a simple click on a desktop icon or selection from a menu
launches the program in the customary fashion. All menus, dialog boxes and
features
operate in an expected manner and at a comparable speed. For the first time,
those contemplating an operating system change will be able to keep their
investment in their existing software, thereby overcoming the largest
impediment to deploying a new operating system. Because LindowsOS is built
around
a Linux® core, it runs Linux® software natively, giving consumers the best
of both worlds.
"Our goal at Lindows.com is to give the consumer a choice when it comes to
their computer," said Robertson. "For too long there's been little
competition
in the operating system arena and consumers have paid the price with buggy
and expensive software. LindowsOS, with its ability to run many popular
Windows®
software programs and Linux® programs, gives computer owners a migration
path to a new operating system which promises to be full featured and
consumer
friendly."
LindowsOS is designed to operate seamlessly in a diverse computing
environment. By interoperating with existing printers, file servers, mail
servers and
other Internet resources, LindowsOS machines will fill the need for cost
effective and stable computers, even in established organizations.
Lindows.com
is distributing a Preview Release of our upcoming LindowsOS to alert
computer users that a new choice is on the horizon and to accelerate
valuable feedback
from the computing community to help us build a better product.
"LindowsOS is a huge effort and consumer input will play a critical role in
our direction and success," said Robertson. "Our hope is that interested
parties
will evaluate our Preview Release, send me and the rest of the company their
specific feedback, and consider our upcoming releases in their own
technology
plans. With the Preview Release, the user will have access to users feedback
forums, databases and other customer feedback vehicles."
LindowsOS Preview Release will be available for purchase or digital download
from the
Lindows.com
web site. It will run on computer systems with a Pentium Processor or AMD
Processor, 64 MB RAM and 1GB of disk space. Inquiries concerning OEM or site
licenses
should be sent to
licenses@lindows.com.

I wonder how well this is gonna work with accessibility software. Whether
it be a release of Jaws for Windows, Window-eyes or perhaps Speakup. If it
works well with speech, this could be pretty darn cool. I'm running Linux
right now, but it would be nice to not have to reboot to switch between the
OS's (Linux and Windows XP.) Keep the posts on Lindows comming. :)

Also lately have heard of another x86 emulator like vmware called plex86
which some may wish to check out.
Don't know if it requires x though to operate.

I was wondering the same thing. I have an email to Michael Robertson, and am
waiting to hear his responces to my questions.
I basically asked if he conciddered what he would do for accessability, and
made him aware of different options, and where to get in contact with
manufacturers of the different access software products.
I am also going to get a copy of the 1.0 beta, and test it on my test
computer. I'll let everyone know the findings as I get them.

the same question occurred to me too.
but it also occurred to me that if lindows is able to run both linux and
windows programs as suggested, would you not be able to run your
existing windows screen reader as well as speakup?
of course not at the same time <evil grin>
I thought that the idea of lindows was to have a thin translation layer
for interpreting windows stuff.
at least that's what I remember from what I've seen about it anyway.

OK, here's the deal on "lindows"
It uses "Wine", a "Windows compatability layer" for linux. Wine requires X.
My best guess is that JAWS for windows won't run under Wine. I don't have a
copy to test with myself, but knowing what I do about the way Wine seperates
programs from each other quite a bit more than Windows does I doubt the
needed "common ground" that JAWS depends on would be present.
Oh yeah, as an aside, the version of Wine that lindows will ship with is
modified slightly; it contains significantly better support for DirectX and
OpenGL than the regular version of Wine.
On a completely unrelated note, it could be possible to write a version of
Wine that doesn't use X and simply dumps text to a console for speakup, or
whatever else, to read. No, I'm not volunteering for that project :-P
But if anytone happens to want to start a project to hack X and the relevent
toolkit libraries into accessible submission, I'll join, I've even got the
beginnings of a structure worked out for all of it.
(hmmm.... this e-mail got a lot longer than I intended)

That may be true, but Lindows claims to be able to run Windows
aplications. I would think that since Jaws is a windows aplication, it
would work like any other. Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part.

However, as long as you put thedependent dll files somewhere your screen
reader can find them it might work.
I had a problem some months back with a copy of JFW, and I managed to badger
Freedom Scientific into giving me the name of the dependancy dll files so I
didn't have to upgrade Internet Explorer everytime they got a whim to
update.
So there is a chance, although slim, that wine could support a screen
reader.

I personally consider it unlikely that JFW will work under Wine/Lindows.
This is largely because JFW does some rather, erm shall we say naughty,
things to get information from the screen. Furthermore not sure that MSAA
would work. However I am hopeful that Hal from Dolphin would work. This is
because Hal follows all the rules far more stringently, and so if Wine can
just capture all GDI system calls and translate them into Linux terms
there's no reason why it won't work.

no windows screen reader will work from my understanding because there
are things deep in the core of windows that windows screen readers use.
you might be able to use some of the primitive solutions but if msaa
support is required, I wouldn't count on being able to use the software.

The other thing is that wine will always be a version or two behind
windows, because windows is a moving target and the wine makers are not
superhuman. And if the Lindows solution is to rely on wine to run windows
apps, they will only be able to run last year's apps at best.
Furthermore, if wine is the solution, why not just run a true Linux with
wine?
At least that package would be open source and you could fix it if it
breaks.
